Gustavus Theodore Holst
Gustav Holst is recognized today as the composer of "The Planets," which remains wildly popular, but for little else except perhaps his "St. Paul Suite." However, Holst was the creator of operas, chamber, vocal, and orchestral music of many different styles, based on subjects as varied as folk songs, Tudor music, Sanskrit literature, astrology, and contemporary poetry. His great interest in Eastern mysticism can be heard in his settings of Choral Hymns from the "Rig Veda" and his short opera "Savitri." Gustavus Theodore von Holst (he dropped the "von" in 1918) was born in Cheltenham, England, in 1874. His grandfather, Gustavus von Holst of Riga, Latvia, a composer of elegant music for the harp, moved to England and became a fashionable harp teacher. Holst's father Adolph, a pianist, organist and choirmaster, taught piano lessons and gave recitals; his mother, who died when Gustav was only eight, was a singer. A frail child whose first recollections were musical, Holst was taught to play the piano and violin, and began to compose when he was about twelve.

Gustav Holst (1874 -1934): Biographical notes by Ian Lace Gustav Holst was born on September 21st 1874 in Cheltenham. His ancestors were Russian immigrants from Riga. His father Adolph was an accomplished pianist who practiced all hours to the neglect of his wife and children. His mother's Spanish great, great grandmother had been an actress who was carried off to Ireland by an Irish peer. Holst's mother was sweet, gentle and unassuming but she was not strong. She died when Gustav was only 8. Adolph's sister, Nina, was brought in to look after the children but was equally distracted by the piano. She had strewn rose petals in the path of Liszt when she was young. Gustav appears to have been an over-sensitive somewhat miserable child. His eyes were weak but no one realized he had to wear spectacles. His chest was weak but no one bothered much about his asthma. He had to rest while climbing the stairs. He hated practicing the violin but enjoyed practicing the piano. Later Adolph married another pupil and Gustav was sent to Cheltenham Grammar School. His father was determined that Gustav should be a really good pianist but he was troubled with neuritis in his hand which made long hours of practice a real strain. He tried composition but failed scholarships to Royal College of Music (RCM) and various other colleges in London. Holst's first engagement was at Wyck Rissington, a small Cotswold village, as organist and choirmaster then as conductor of the choral society at Bourton on the Water. He composed an operetta Lansdowne Castle which was produced at the Cheltenham Corn Exchange in 1893. Adolph was sufficiently impressed to borrow money to send Gustav to the Royal College of Music. At the College, Holst (and Ralph Vaughan Williams [RVW]) studied under Stanford. Although he often disagreed with Stanford's opinions, Holst was always grateful to him, especially for teaching him how to become his own critic.

His music was based on subjects such as folk songs, Tudor music, Sanskrit literature, astrology, and contemporary poetry. Gustavus Theodore von Holst was born in Cheltenham, England, in 1874. As a child whose first recollections were musical, Holst was taught to play the piano and violin, and began to compose when he was twelve. Holst met Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1895 while they were students at the Royal College of Music, and they became dependent on one another for support and assistance although there was little similarity in their music. Holst found it impossible to earn a living as a composer, so he took a post as a singing teacher. Around 1904 he was appointed Musical Director at St. Paul's Girls' School, Hammersmith, his biggest teaching post and one which he kept until his death. Holst visited the United States twice, once to lecture at the University of Michigan, and again for a six-month period as a lecturer at Harvard. He died in 1934, four months short of his sixtieth birthday, after a lifetime of poor health by a concussion suffered in a backward fall from the conductor's podium, from which he never fully recovered.

This is a suite of seven movements for orchestra, each about a different planet (the Earth is not included, and Pluto had not yet been discovered). The music does not really describe the planets, it describes the Roman gods after which the planets are named. Mars , for example, is the “Bringer of War”. It has a very exciting rhythm with five beats in a bar. Jupiter has a tune which has become famous as the hymn “I vow to thee my country”. Jessica Miller, mezzo soprano, Kyu Won Han, baritone, Simon O'Neill, tenor Gustav Holst is a classical composer best-known for his orchestral suite, The Planets. While The Planets is a beautiful work and deserving of the attention it has been given, many of Holst's other pieces receive unfortunately little attention. Gustav Holst was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, in western England, to a musical family. He served as an organist and choirmaster at Gloucestershire churches, but neuritis in his right hand forced him away from the organ. Instead he turned to the trombone. From 1895 to 1898, Holst studied composition at the Royal College of Music, at which he later taught, under Stanford. When he left, he became an orchestral trombonist. In 1905, Holst was appointed as the Director of Music at the St. Paul's Girl's School in Hammersmith, a small town just west of London. Some of his pieces reflect this appointment, which he held for most of the rest of his life, such as the St. Paul's Suite and the Hammersmith Prelude and Scherzo. One of Holst's contemporaries, Ralph Vaughan Williams, was a good friend of Holst's. They wrote letters, exchanging critique and ideas. Holst had a wife, Isobel, and a daughter, Imogen.
