Tzadik 7616-2 Derek Bailey’s death Christmas of last year is still fresh in the minds of many. It's a dull communal ache that the newly released Moat Recordings will hopefully have a hand in assuaging. Back-story on Joseph Holbrooke Trio is gospel to many free improv followers and readily accessible on the web. The partnership was one of the first Petrie dishes in fomenting free improvisational techniques. Bailey and drummer Tony Oxley continued in the field, becoming cornerstones on their respective instruments and elder statesmen of the "non-idiomatic" idiom. Bassist Gavin Bryars dropped off the scene and defected to contemporary composition, making his own modest mark in those environs. Thirty-odd years later the trio reunited for a concert in Cologne released on Incus as Joseph Holbrooke ’98 . Shortly after that momentous rendezvous, the trio decided to enter the studio and further test the fortitude of their rekindled alliance. So what caused the delay in disseminating of the results? Tragically, Gary Todd, original producer of the sessions, suffered a serious accident that necessitated permanent hospitalization and effectively took him out of commission. The project stayed stymied for several years until Todd’s associate Tom Recchion stepped in. Bryars got in touch with John Zorn and pushed the project through to completion under the financial auspices of Tzadik. In terms of value-addeds, the Moat Studio sound is clean and incisive and points directly to why the spot was one of Bailey’s favored haunts. Packaging and documentation are on par with past Tzadik sets like Wadada Leo Smith’s

I, being desirous of leaving on record a few of the incidents of my life and also a genealogy of my forefathers according to the record that has fallen into my hands from their hands that my children may be somewhat acquainted of the origin of their forefathers and I have written it in the English language hoping it will prove a blessing to them and be held sacred in my family from generation to generation as I shall embrace it in my expression and the knowledge I may have gained in the course of my days and I pray the Lord to direct my pen, assist my memory, correct my judgment and inspire my heart to do the will of God and preserve this history according to my desires to do good. That God may be honored. His kingdom built up and His home glorified in the hereafter in the midst of the saints I therefore dedicate these lines to be written unto the Lord God of Hosts even forever and ever, Amen CHAPTER I I was born in the Township of Florence, County of Oneida, State of New York, January 16, 1806. Joseph Holbrook, 1806-1885
Autobiography (1806-1846), Typescript, HBLL After the first of July of this same year [1836], there began to be a great excitement between the citizens of Clay County and the Latter-day Saints and it appeared that war was even at our doors, when some of the citizens of Clay County came forward as mediators and called a meeting of the citizens and some of our leaders of our church. It was agreed that one-half of the Latter-day Saints would leave the county in six months and the remainder as soon after as possible and not think of putting another crop in that county or the people would not suffer them to remain longer and they, the citizens of Clay [County] would send a delegation into the north counties of Caldwell with our leaders to induce the few settlers in said counties to sell out their possessions to the Latter-day Saints so that the Church would have the soil of the county to themselves. When a meeting was called of the citizens of Caldwell, they agreed to sell out some of the Church property, when my brother and myself proposed to take our team and go out Shoal Creek near where Far West was afterward laid out by the Church.
We camped on the creek for about one week, exploring the county with Bishop [Edward] Partridge and John Corrill, the surveyor, for the purpose of making locations for the church. Bishop Partridge counseled me with my brother, Chandler Holbrook, and Benjamin Covey and Jacob Yates. Mr. Cusie [?] [offered to sell his] place of 40 acres with ten acres of corn upon it for $300.00. We all four went and bought it. I turned out my wagon for $55.00 and gave my note for the other $20.00 in six months, which gave me the right of ten acres undivided in the 4th acres.

But the talking point appears to misconstrue the facts.... ...For more on Clinton and her Iraq vote, see Ambassador Richard Holbrooke's comments to the Monitor, Clinton's response when she was here and Joe Lieberman's account when he was here. For what it's worth, a New York Times magazine piece on Hagel nearly two years ago suggested that Hagel, who voted for the Iraq resolution despite strong misgivings, had persuaded himself that doing so could help Colin Powell (and thus reduce the chance of war). Indeed, Hagel's speech explaining his vote was much more pessimistic than Clinton's.

New Jersey Nominated by: Brian Lee, Marc Sweetgall, Jiashuo Feng, Kevin Lee, and Chris Kennedy The School of Athens had Socrates. The Packers had Vince Lombardi. The AAST Math Team, however, has both of these legendary icons wrapped into one figure, Mr. Joe Holbrook. In innumerable ways, he is behind every single one of our team s successes, and truly merits recognition for his efforts.
Of course, Mr. Holbrook is also a great educator. His priority is not to have a dozens of perfect scores every year, but to generate interest in mathematics and science within the scores of students on the team. Many students carry this interest with them into college and beyond, achieving amazing results on the Putnam, and making advances in the field of mathematics. Furthermore, he has assembled one of the largest libraries of international mathematics books in the nation, of which any student may peruse at his or her convenience. To prevent team members from getting overwhelmed by this sea of books, Mr. Holbrook perpetually gives us pointers and guidance as to which books to work out of or which books to read from cover to cover. In this way, the many mathematical fanatics on our team can explore deeper into topics such as number theory, geometry, algebra, and combinatorics.
Among this vast library the three most visited shelves' an exhaustive array of competitions that follow the American track to the zenith of high school mathematics: the International Mathematics Olympiad. One shelf has about a dozen copies of all the past AMC and AHSME exams, the second shelf has a score of every single AIME test, and the third shelf has the majority of past USAMO and IMO problems. Therefore, anyone who wants to practice one or many of the exams is never hindered by unavailability. Mr. Holbrook always encourages younger students on the team to start off solving problems from the AMC 10, while simultaneously studying topics from the two Art of Problem Solving books. In this way, many students can improve their skills in weaker areas, leading to the aforementioned success.
