Introduction (born Hanau, near Frankfurt, 16 November 1895; died Frankfurt, 28 December 1963). He studied as a violinist and composer (with Mendelssohn and Sekles) at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt (1908-17) and made an early reputation through his chamber music and expressionist operas. But then he turned to neo-classicism in his Kammermusik no.1, the first of seven such works imitating the Baroque concerto while using an expanded tonal harmony and distinctively modern elements, notably jazz. Each uses a different mixed chamber orchestra, suited to music of linear counterpoint and, in the fast movements, strongly pulsed rhythm. During this early period Hindemith lived as a performer: he was leader of the Frankfurt Opera orchestra (1915-23, with a break for army service), and he played the viola in the Amar-Hindemith Quartet (1921-9) as well as in the first performance of Walton's Viola Concerto (1929). Much of his chamber music was written in 1917-24, including four of his six quartets and numerous sonatas, and he was also involved in promoting chamber music through his administrative work for the Donaueschingen Festival (1923-30). However, he also found time to compose abundantly in other genres; including lieder ( Das Marienleben , to Rilke poems), music for newly invented mechanical instruments, music for schoolchildren and amateurs, and opera (

    HINDEMITH, PAUL BIOGRAPHY
Respected as one of the most distinguished viola-players of his time, Hindemith devoted the earlier part of his career to performance, first as a violinist and then as violist in the Amar-Hindemith Quartet, while developing his powers as a composer and his distinctive theories of harmony and of the place of the composer in society. His name is particularly associated with the concept of Gebrauchsmusik, and the composer as craftsman. He was prolific in composition and wrote music in a variety of forms. Attacked by the National Socialists, he left his native Germany in 1935, taking leave from the Berlin Musikhochschule, where he had served as professor of composition for some eight years. In 1940 he settled in the United States, teaching at Yale University, a position he combined after the war with a similar position at the University of Zurich. He died in his native city of Frankfurt in 1963. Operas and Stage Works Orchestral Music In addition to the Mathis der Maler Symphony, the Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber is in general repertoire. Hindemith wrote concertos for various solo instruments. Of these the concertos for his own instrument, the viola, are notable, in particular the attractive Der Schwanendreher (The Swan-Drover), based on folk-songs, and Kammermusik No. 5, also a viola concerto.

His name is particularly associated with the concept of Gebrauchsmusik (workaday music) and the composer as a craftsman. He was a prolific composer and wrote music in a variety of forms. Attacked by the National Socialists, who viewed him as a musical degenerate, he resigned from the Berlin Musikhochschule, where he had served as professor of composition for some eight years. He moved to New York where he was appointed visiting professor at Yale University in 1940. After the war he returned to Europe and spent the rest of his life touring extensively, conducting for various orchestras, teaching at the Universities of Yale and Zurich and composing his later introspective compositions. Paul Hindemith Works In 1933 Hindemith began work on his opera "Mathis der Maler" and found himself in open conflict with the National Socialist government of Germany and, despite the protestation of the conductor Furtwangler, the opera was banned.
