H©rold was the only child of Fran§ois-Joseph H©rold, a pianist and composer, and Jeanne-Gabrielle Pascal and grandson of Nicolas H©rold, an organist . At the age of six, he attended the Hix Institute and excelled in his studies. While there, he also took musical theory with Fran§ois-Joseph F©tis (who later edited the periodical La Revue Musicale ). At the age of seven, he played piano and composed some piano pieces. H©rold's father did not intend for him to follow a musical career, but after his father's death in 1802, he could finally pursue this avenue. He enrolled in the Conservatoire in 1806 and was schooled in piano by Louis Adam (father of the composer Adolphe Adam ). He also was instructed by

Concert Program Notes for Herold Ferdinand Herold Born January 28, 1791 Paris Died January 19, 1833 Paris Zampa Overture Zampa is one of two operatic masterpieces for which Herold is remembered. (The other, and considered to be better, masterpiece is Le pre aux clercs .) Originally called Le corsaire Zampa had its premiere under the title of Zampa, ou La fiancee de marbre on May 3, 1831. It was very popular from the beginning but financial troubles of the theater limited the number of its early performances. By 1877, however, it had been performed well over 500 times. Zampa's brilliant overture is well known and a popular concert piece. Biography of Ferdinand Herold Louis Joseph Ferdinand Herold was of Alsatian descent and the son of a composer and pianist. He studied piano with his father and piano and violin at the Paris Conservatory and became a leading composer of comic opera. He also composed many pieces for piano, as well as symphonies, concertos and quartets. In spite of his popularity during his lifetime and the graceful and charming traits of his music, his work is rarely heard today - the often played Overture to his opera Zampa being the lone exceptions.
