William Henry Fry was the first music critic for a major American daily newspaper: Horace Greeley's influential New York Tribune . In this capacity, he fulminated over the neglect of contemporary American composers, especially himself. Fry the composer did not lack popularity and acclaim. But his taste of success, and travels abroad, heightened his infuriated awareness that the United States lacked the means to school, present, and promote its own creative musical talent. "I make common cause with Americans, born or naturalized, who are engaged in the world's Art struggle and against degrading deference to European dictation," he trumpeted. What does Fry's music sound like? His opera Leonora , produced in Philadelphia and New York, is Italian bel canto. But neither does Fry disdain German and French influences. In his

THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY OPUS 3 IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC
The Sylviad: or,
Minstrelsy of Nature in the Wilds of North America
(reprint of Boston, 1823, 1825-26)
by Anthony Philip Heinrich (1781-1861)
(The Dawning of Music in Kentucky and The Western Minstrel)
prepared, with introduction, by J. Bunker Clark
The Sylviad was originally published to impress the Royal Academy of Music, to which it is dedicated, before Heinrich traveled to London to advance his career. The thirty-four worksfor piano, solo voice, or vocal ensembleare sometimes amusing, sometimes simple, sometimes fiendishly difficult, especially the two toccatas for piano. Not only is this Bohemian-born composer America's first genius of art music, in the pages of The Sylviad are found many avant-garde elements of the Romantic century: virtuosity, extreme chromaticism, complex experimental harmonies, unconventional formal structures, expression of personal feelings and experiences, and intense nationalism.

Y-Z Yasser, Joseph. " Dies Irae : The Famous Medieval Chant." Musical Courier (6 October 1927): 6, 39. One main reason for the Dies Irae sequence's acquired fame as a leitmotif of death is its "catchy" and easily recognizable melody. Brief discussions of works using the chant note the setting and models. The polyphonic treatment illustrated by Asola and Pitoni's Requiems is traced in Liszt's Totentanz. The dance-like rhythmic treatment in Berlioz's Symphonie fantastique Danse Macabre. Tchaikovsky, the first Russian composer to use the Dies Irae, uses a contrapuntal device, applied before in Totentanz and later in Rachmaninoff's Toteninsel. Other works mentioned are Glazunov's Moyen Age, Miaskovsky's Sixth Symphony, Schelling's Impressions from an Artist's Life, Loeffler's Ode for One Who Fell in Battle, and Simond's unpublished Elaboration for organ. Works: Asola: Requiem (6); Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique (6); Glazunov:

American classical music: Encyclopedia - American classical music
American classical music is music written in the United States but in the European classical music tradition. In many cases, beginning in the 18th century, it has been influenced by American folk music styles; and from the 20th century to the present day it has often been influenced by folk, jazz, blues, and pop styles. Jazz music is sometimes referred to as American classical music, mainly by jazz musicians. They feel that, being as jazz originated in America, jazz is the true American classical music. American Romanticism: Music vs. Painting
My mother and brother came from Texas to visit. Looking for something touristy for us to do, I finally checked out, for the first time, the state park at Olana. A castle in detailed pseudo-Arabic style only five or six miles from my house, impressively overlooking the Hudson River lengthwise , Olana was the home and monument of Frederic E. Church (1826-1900), probably the most famous figure in the Hudson River School of painters.
Cropsey: Autumn on the Hudson River It may be - I don't know - that artists look down their noses at the Hudson River painters the way we musicians condescend to America's Romantic composers, but I don't get that impression. Like Chadwick, Paine, and Parker, the Hudson River painters studied in Europe, yet unlike them did not seem to have their individuality crushed by the experience. Church, prolific due to his inherited wealth, has his better and worse pieces, but it is not difficult to have favorites, such as his Rio de Luz Niagara from the American Side Icebergs Twilight in the Wilderness . Cropsey had a flair for red-tinged canvases, and was known as "The Painter of Autumn." The veracity of his colors in an American forest in October was so doubted in England that he took up the practice of saving red leaves and exhibiting them next to his paintings to prove that he did not exaggerate. Heade's perfectly flat New Jersey horizons, more zen than even Caspar David Friedrich's paintings, have particularly appealed to the modern sensibility, and the quirky sensuality of his myriad orchids is quite lovable.
