Rediscovering The Sylviad
by Douglas A. Lee
The first two opus numbers of Anthony Philip Heinrich (1781-1861), The Dawning of Music in Kentucky and The Western Minstrel , have been available for nearly three decades. With the reprint of The Sylviad: or, Minstrelsy of Nature in the Wilds of North America , ed. J. Bunker Clark (Conners Publications, 1996; $69.95), we now have access to the major portion of Heinrich’s musical legacy, or at least to those works published during his lifetime. The Sylviad , opus 3, appeared in two parts, printed in Boston by Gottlieb Graupner. The first part (1823) promised on the title page 100 works (in fact there are seven) and was dedicated to the Royal Academy of Music in Great Britain. The second part (1825-26) promises the same number of compositions (but contains only twenty-seven) and carried the same dedication. “The Minstrel’s Catch” (p. 203) is repeated from the first collection, leading to some conjecture about Heinrich’s intentions for the second part. The editor, J. Bunker Clark, discusses these and related matters at length in his thoroughly documented Introduction. Clark has explored this work at even greater length in

It is a great pleasure to be able to review The Music and Scripts of In Dahomey , the critical text of which has occupied Professor Riis for a number of years. In Dahomey is one of the important African-American works that caught the public imagination from the time it was premiered in 1902 to its closing three years later after more than eleven hundred performances. It made stars of many of its principal creators and performers and was the only African-American musical of the period that was honored with the publication of a piano-vocal score.
Like many musicals at the turn of the century, In Dahomey was a fluid show, with a changing script and music, to accommodate new performers and to keep audiences coming back. There are many advertisements for musical productions from this period that qualify the familiar title of a show with "2nd Edition. All New Music." Professor Riis has done admirable detective work in ferreting out all the variant musical versions that were included during the four-year run of

In December 1997, five graduate students from the University of California at Santa Barbara joined Michael Beckerman in a trip to Prague, where the group presented a series of lectures at the Bohuslav Martinù Foundation. The presentations were the result of collaborations between Dr. Beckerman and his students and were given as a collective effort. Sponsored by the Foundation, the Museum of Czech Music, the Dvoøák Museum and the Historical Club and Foundation of the Open Society Fund of Prague, the lectures coincided with the annual Bohuslav Martinù Festival. The participants included Erik Entwistle, Derek Katz, David Malvinni, Diane Paige, and Thomas Svatos.
Two presentations were given on December 15th, beginning with Janáèek and the Ordinary read by Derek Katz. In this paper, the final scene of Kát'a Kabanová was used to suggest that, in some ways, Janáèek's operatic music exploits musical and dramatic devices from the nineteenth-century European repertoire.
