Although Heinichen's music is original, rhythmically exuberant and imaginative, it was inexplicably little known for a long time. Johann David Heinichen was born in the small village of Cr¶ssuln, near Weissenfels . His father Michael Heinichen had studied music at the celebrated Thomasschule Leipzig associated with the Thomaskirche , served as cantor in Pegau and was pastor of the village church in Cr¶ssuln. Johann David also attended Thomasschule Leipzig . There he studied music with Johann Schelle and later received organ and harpsichord lessons with Johann Kuhnau . The future-composer Christoph Graupner was also a student of Kuhnau at the time. Heinichen enrolled in 1702 to study law at the University of Leipzig and in 1705-6 qualified as a lawyer (in the early 18th century the law was a favored route for composers; Kuhnau, Graupner and Georg Philipp Telemann were also lawyers). Heinichen practiced law in Weissenfels until

Johann David Heinichen was educated at the Thomasschule in Leipzig, where J.S.Bach was later to teach, serving as assistant to the then cantor, Kuhnau, and proceeding thereafter to the University of Leipzig. After an initial career as a lawyer in Weissenfels, Heinichen returned to musical activity in Leipzig, followed by a period of work and study in Italy. In 1717 he was appointed Court Kapellmeister in Dresden, a position he retained until his death in 1729. Operas Heinichen wrote operas in the earlier part of his career and moved to Italy with the express purpose of studying the art of Italian oepra at its source. His single opera for Dresden, Flavio Crispo, remained incomplete, abandoned, it seems, when the Italian opera company was disbanded. Orchestral Music Heinichen was extremely prolific as a composer. Of his instrumental music some two dozen concertos survive. These include a number of cocnertos for multiple instruments.

Introduction To suggest that Johann David Heinichen's music and theoretical writings have been under-explored would be an understatement. Heinichen and his music has surely suffered the same fate as many of his contemporaries in being overshadowed by the 19 th century preoccupation with Johann Sebastian Bach gusto that belies the large amount of research and deep insight needed to bring these works to our attention. With respect to modern printed editions of Heinichen's music Max Sobel of Concerto Editions and Michael Walter in particular are continuing this work. Michael Walter's prefaces to his forthcoming editions of La Gara degli Dei and Diana su l'Elba clearly demonstrate the immense research and time spent in their preparation.

Johann David Heinichen 1683-1729
Student at the St. Thomas School under Bach's predecessor, Kuhnau , and later teacher of Graupner , Heinichen continued in Leipzig to study law at the university there. In 1710 he visited Italy, where, in 1711, he produced an important book on the thoroughbass that was later revised as Der Generalbass in der Composition (1728). After six years in Italy, Heinichen worked briefly for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen (1717, the same year that Bach began his appointment in the same court). Heinichen soon became Kapellmeister to the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland in Dresden. Although he composed more than 150 sacred choral works, Heinichen is remembered today mainly for his contributions to music theory.
