Johann Michael Haydn, a composer of Österreich and younger brother of Franz Josef Haydn , was born in Rohrau, in Österreich, and was baptised on 14 Septembre 1737. Like his brother, Haydn left home as a young boy to become a chorister at St Stephen`s Cathedral, in Wien, where the choir school curriculum included instruction in singing, keyboard and violin as well as general subjects. He made ample use of the many opportunities to observe and take part in the musical life of the capital, and studied the music of Fux and his treatise on counterpoint Gradus ad Parnassum. In 1757 he was appointed Kapellmeister to the Bishop of Grosswardein in Hungaria.
Compositions from this period include several masses, a Te Deum, symphonies and a concerto. The bishop's flourishing musical establishment has been described in the autobiography of Dittersdorf , who entered the bisop's service in 1765. Haydn was offered a position in Salzburg in 1762 and the following year assumed his duties as court musician and Konzertmeister to Archbishop Sigismund Schrattenbach.
Haydn thus held an important position in Salzburg during Mozart 's formative years.

Michael Haydn was born in 1737 in the Austrian village of Rohrau near the Hungarian border. His father was Mathias Haydn , a wheelwright who also served as "Marktrichter", an office akin to village mayor. Haydn's mother, the former Maria Koller, had previously worked as a cook in the palace of Count Harrach , the presiding aristocrat of Rohrau. Neither parent could read music. However, Matthias was an enthusiastic folk musician, who during the journeyman period of his career had taught himself to play the harp, and he also made sure that his children learned to sing; for details see Mathias Haydn Michael's early professional career path was paved by his older brother Joseph, whose skillful singing had landed him a position as a boy soprano in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna , under the direction of Carl Georg Reutter . The early 19th century author Albert Christoph Dies, reporting from Joseph's late-life reminiscences, says the following:

Johann Michael Haydn
A younger brother of Franz Joseph Haydn ; born at Rohrau, Austria , 14 September, 1737; died at Salzburg , 10 August, 1806. In 1745, Michael Haydn entered the choir of the Cathedral of St. Stephen , in Vienna , where his brother Joseph had been active as soprano soloist since 1740. By the order of the choir-master, Johann Adam Karl Reuter, Joseph was entrusted with the musical education of his younger brother. They were together in the choir for three years. When Joseph's soprano voice gave out, Michael succeeded him as soloist, remaining with St. Stephen's choir until 1755. In 1757 he was called to Grosswardein to serve Archbishop Sigismund as choir- master of his cathedral , and in 1762 he accepted the position of orchestra conductor to the Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus of Salzburg , later assuming also the duties of organist at the church of St. Peter, at Salzburg , which was presided over by the Benedictines . The latter he subsequently exchanged for similar duties at the cathedral . Although Michael Haydn retained these honourable positions to the end of his days, i.e. for almost forty-four years, during the first years of his incumbency his services were not quite satisfactory to his employers, nor did they call forth the approval of his contemporaries, among whom were Leopold Mozart and his great son
