Franz Joseph Haydn
Franz Joseph Haydn, who lived from 1732 to 1809, is very well known as a composer of symphonies. Between 1759 and 1795, he wrote 104 symphonies, more than any other composer! Haydn was one of several composers who developed the symphony.
In 1761, Haydn got a job as the composer for the royal Esterházy family. He was luckier than many composers, because with this job, he was able to make a comfortable living doing what he loved—writing music. Haydn worked for the Esterházy family for more than thirty years. Haydn’s nickname was "Papa," because he was so well liked by the musicians with whom he worked. In his later years, the Esterházy family paid Haydn a pension, even though he was not required to write music for them anymore.
Symphony No. 45 is called the "Farewell" Symphony. It is in the same style as his other symphonies, except for the fourth movement. In this movement two or three musicians at a time finish their parts and leave the stage while the music is still playing. This continues until the end of the symphony, when a single violinist is left on the stage with the conductor. One story told about this symphony is that Haydn and his musicians wanted to return to their families in town for the winter. Prince Esterházy got the point, and the musicians got their time off.

Franz Joseph Haydn: The string quartet 1732-1809
The string quartet form, developed more than 200 years ago by Franz Joseph Haydn, has been as durable as the lowly but indispensable dinner fork. Think about it. The fork hasn't changed much in two centuries. Oh, it's been made with a variety of materials, and the contours and curlicues come in thousands of designs. But the basic dinner fork is still an easy-to-grip tool with a handle on one end and usually four prongs on the other. It's practical, durable and effective. Similarly, the string quartet is still the durable four-pronged composition Haydn helped design in the 1760s. The term ``string quartet'' actually refers both to a type of composition and the group that plays it. The group consists of two violins, a viola and a cello. The classic format of the quartet-as-composition happens to correspond to the classic format of the symphony - which, not incidentally, was also established primarily by Haydn. The first of a quartet's four movements is usually fast and in sonata form. At its simplest, sonata form introduces a main theme in a certain key and a contrasting theme in a related key; this is called the exposition. The melodies are then stretched and kneaded like bread dough in the development section. Then the themes return pretty much in their original forms, except that both are in the key of the first theme; this is the recapitulation.

Franz Joseph Haydn biography
A brief biogrpaphy of Franz Joseph Haydn, who is remembered in history as the Father of the Symphony and an adventurer into almost every element of music.
Franz Joseph Haydn is best remembered for his symphonic music, honored by music historians who have dubbed him the "Father of the Symphony." That is a well-known fact. But did you know that Haydn worked his way from peasant to Kapellmeister where he lived in the house of a prince? Did you know that although Austria was his home, he traveled to London to write his most famous symphonies? Did you know that Haydn's oratorio "The Creation" grew out of his love of nature, as he was an avid hunter and fisherman? Or did you know that Haydn was mentor to a young music student by the name of Mozart? These are the lesser-known facts, the parts of Haydn's life that allow us to peek inside a great man's legacy to see what made him tick. Haydn was indeed a self-made man. Born in the small village of Rohrau, Austria on March 31, 1732, Franz Joseph Haydn was the second of twelve children. His father was a wagon maker by trade, but quite musical. On Sundays, the Haydn family often gave private concerts. Haydn's father played the harp while Haydn and his mother sang. A cousin who was a schoolmaster recognized the five-year-old boy's talent and offered to take him into his school so that he could receive musical instruction. The food portions for the children were meager and Haydn himself said that "there was more flogging than food." Still, Haydn persevered, determined even as a young boy to maximize the opportunity and learn all that he could.

Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) Franz Joseph Haydn is a cornerstone of the Classical Period of music. He came at a time when the influence of the church on musical development was diminishing and this influence was moving towards the nobility who employed composers to provide entertainment for their guests. In Haydn's case his employment by one family was a happy and rewarding one, which gave him a lot of freedom to explore many different aspects of music. This experimentation and the experience gained allowed Haydn to play a crucial role in establishing many of the key classical forms such as the Symphony, the String Quartet, the Sonata and the Concerto. Although versions of all these forms already existed, Haydn was the principle composer to establish and promote them. A key component of all these forms is something called "Sonata Form" which was normally used for the first (and sometimes later) movements of a works. Haydn's key role in classical music, his reputation across Europe, and the wealth of music he created over the years, earned him the knickname "Papa Haydn". Haydn rarely travelled far from the Esterhazy properties although he did meet and form a mutually rewarding relationship with Mozart on a visit to Vienna. Haydn outlived several heads of the Esterhazy family and one change in leadership gave him the opportunity to travel further afield and he was to visit parts of Europe and especially London where he discovered the works of Handel. He made another fruitful visit to London later, where he composed and conducted a number of new symphonies. A sign of Haydn's fame in later life and the political times in which he lived, is that the invading Napolean put a guard around Haydn's house as the composer lay ill. No doubt the composer would have approved when Mozart's Requiem was later played at his funeral.

Haydn, (Franz) Joseph (b. Rohrau, 31 March 1732; d. Vienna, 31 May 1809).
Austrian composer. The son of a wheelwright, he was trained as a choirboy and taken into the choir at St Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, where he sang from c.1740 to c.1750. He then worked as a freelance musician, playing the violin and keyboard instruments, accompanying for singing lessons given by the composer Porpora, who helped and encouraged him. In c.1759 he was appointed music director to Count Morzin; but he soon moved, into service as Vice-Kapellmeister with one of the leading Hungarian families, the Esterh zys, becoming full Kapellmeister on Werner's death in 1766.
In his early years Haydn chiefly wrote instrumental music, including symphonies and other pieces for the twice-weekly concerts and the prince's Tafelmusik, and works for the instrument played by the prince, the baryton (a kind of viol), for which he composed c.125 trios in ten years. There were also cantatas and a little church music. After Werner's death church music became more central, and so, after the opening of a new opera house at Eszterh za in 1768, did opera. Although his operas never attained wider exposure, Haydn's reputation had now grown and was international. Much of his music had been published in all the main European centres; under a revised contract with the Esterh za his employers no longer had exclusive rights to his music.

A renowned and prolific Austrian composer, famous for his many symphonies. Not only are Haydn's works vitally important in the evolution of musical form, they are delightful and inspirational. Haydn was directly responsible for establishing the form of the string quartet and he perfected the classical symphony, synthesizing a range of emotions and anticipating by many years the work of composers from Beethoven through Schumann. His keyboard sonatas are marvels of invention and surprise and the church masses are joyous and full of energy and rhythmic counterpoint. To quote his friend and admirer Mozart, "There is no one who can do it all to joke and to terrify, to evoke laughter and profound sentiment and all equally well, except Joseph Haydn." ~ Blue Gene Tyranny, All Music Guide Expand [+] Genre: Classical , Classicism

Franz Joseph Haydn
The son of an Austrian wheelwright, he was a chorister at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. His main position was as court composer to the Esterházy family. He was a principal figure in the emergence of the Classical style and wrote for almost every form. He was particularly important in the development of the string quartet and the symphony (writing 104 of them) and was affectionately known as 'Papa Haydn'. He is reputed to have written his Farewell Symphony as a gentle suggestion to his employer that his fellow musicians need a holiday.
