Church Music Oratorios The Seasons (Die Jahreszeiten) , with a text by van Swieten based on James Thomson, was first performed in 1801. Haydn's earlier oratorios include Il ritorno di Tobia (The Return of Tobias), completed in 1775. Stage Works Vocal Music Haydn wrote a number of songs, providing nearly 400 British folk-song arrangements for the Edinburgh publisher Thomson, in addition to songs and cantatas in German and English. The two sets of Canzonettas written in England in 1794 and 1795 include settings of verses by the wife of Haydn's London surgeon, Hunter. Orchestral Music Haydn's 108 symphonies, written between 1759 and 1795, range from works written for the relatively modest local court orchestra of two oboes, two horns and strings, to the greater complexity of his larger scale London Symphonies, the twelve written for performance in London under the direction of the German-born violinist and impresario Salomon during the composer's two London visits. The London Symphonies include a number of works with nicknames, No. 94, "The Surprise", No. 96, "The Miracle", No. 100, "The Military", No. 101, "The Clock"

Home Page Franz Joseph Haydn Life The Austrian composer "Papa" Haydn was universally loved and an important figure in the development of the classical symphony and string quartet. He also contributed greatly to most other instrumental forms. In 1759 Haydn was appointed music director of the small musical establishment of Count Morzin. This post, which he filled for almost thirty years, was ideal for Haydn because it gave him the opportunity to work with a group of fine musicians. During his years at the Esterházy country estate, Haydn met many Viennese artists including Wolfgang Mozart The death of Prince Nicholas in 1790 left Haydn free to come and go as he pleased and he accepted a contract to appear in London where he was hailed as a genius. Mozart is said to have begged him not to go to England because he spoke so few languages to which Haydn replied: "The language I speak is understood the world over". Haydn retired to Vienna and died there during the French occupation of the city.

Franz Joseph Haydn
Along with Mozart , they were the greatest composers of the Classical Era. Haydn was born as the Baroque Era was just ending, with Handel writing his operas and massive oratorios in London, Bach in Germany composing his complex masterpieces. And by the time of his death, the world was getting ready for the Romantic Era, created by Haydn's one-time student, Ludwig van Beethoven Born in the small village of Rodrau, Austria, Franz Joseph Haydn grew up in a music-loving family (Joseph's younger brother was a well-known religious composer). When he was a young boy, he was sent to live with his father's cousin, where he learned to play the harpsichord and piano. His church choir singing voice was heard by the music director of St Stephen's Church in Vienna. Absolutely stunned, the choirmaster allowed Haydn to join the choir in Vienna, where Haydn attended church school, studying all the ordinary school subjects, in addition to his composition lessons. As he sang in the choir, Haydn used his clothing money to buy books on composition, and taught himself how to compose. However, his singing career did not last long. At seventeen, his voice broke ("He sounds like a crowing rooster," the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria remarked). Haydn, having the playful, childish attitude, performed many practical jokes on his fellow choirmates. But his last, cutting off the pigtail of another singer, was his excuse to leave the choir, thinking he had no use there with a cracked voice. But now, he was a dropout, with no money, job, or place to live.

Austrian composer. He was one of six children born to Mathias Haydn (a wheelwright and civil servant) and Anna Maria Koller in Lower Austria. His parents, wanting to prepare him for the priesthood, sent him in 1738 to a church school in nearby Haitiburg. There Haydn took his first formal instruction in music. When Georg Reutter, the newly installed music director at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, came recruiting, the young Haydn was recommended for the choir. Upon reaching the choir's minimum age of eight, Haydn was invited to Vienna. At St. Stephen's Haydn received instruction in voice, violin, and keyboard, but little general education except for a smattering of Latin. In 1745 he was joined there by his brother Michael , and almost immediately the gifted younger sibling assumed the elder's position as soloist. Passing out of the limelight probably encouraged Haydn in his natural bent for composition, but he received little help: Reutter, himself a professional composer, gave the youngster only two lessons. As Haydn's voice changed, his position as a chorister became increasingly untenable. In late 1749 he was dismissed peremptorily over a practical joke. Taking an attic room next door to St. Michael's Church, he made ends meet by giving violin and keyboard lessons, working as a free-lance musician in churches, and performing in (and sometimes composing for) groups playing the open-air evening serenades so popular in Vienna. At the same time he began an intensive study of counterpoint (using the writings of

    The Rococo
The contrapuntal practices of the German Baroque began to give way in the first half of the eighteenth century to a highly ornamented style of melodic instrumental music, especially in France. This style has come to be called Rococo , after the same movement in the visual arts. The paintings of Boucher, Fragonard, and Watteau are prime examples of the visual style of the time. This refined but ornamented style could already be heard in the music of French composers Couperin and Rameau , and pervades the music of Italian composer Giovanni Pergolesi (1710-1736) . It is evident as well in the music of the two sons of Johann Sebastian Bach Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788) and Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782) . J. C. Bach eventually made his home in London and became known as the "London" Bach in order to distinguish him from his older brother. Johann Christian's many keyboard

A Career at Esterháza
T
Evaluation
H aydn was prolific in nearly all genres, vocal and instrumental, sacred and secular. Many of his works were unknown beyond the walls of Esterháza, most notably the 125 trios and other assorted pieces featuring the baryton, a hybrid string instrument played by Prince Miklós. Most of Haydn's 19 operas and marionette operettas were written to accommodate the talents of the Esterháza company as well as the tastes of his prince. Haydn freely admitted the superiority of the operas of his young friend Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In other categories, however, his works circulated widely, and his influence was profound. The 107 symphonies and 68 string quartets that span his career are proof of his ever-fresh approach to thematic materials and form, as well as of his mastery of instrumentation. His 62 piano sonatas and 43 piano trios document a growth from the easy elegance suitable for the home music making of amateurs to the public virtuosity of his late works.
Haydn's productivity is matched by his inexhaustible originality. His manner of turning a simple tune or motive into unexpectedly complex developments was admired by his contemporaries as innovative. Dramatic surprise, often turned to humorous effect, is characteristic of his style, as is a fondness for folklike melodies. A writer of Haydn's day described the special appeal of his music as “popular artistry,” and indeed his balance of directness and bold experiment transformed instrumental expression in the 18th century.

Haydn began his musical education in 1741 as a choirboy in the Vienna cathedral, possibly under Fux (who died the following year). When his voice changed young Haydn accompanied Porpora's voice students, thus, inadvertently, becoming Porpora's student as well. In 1761, after a three-year appointment at Lukavec, Haydn became Kapellmeister to the Esterhàzy family, which position he maintained to the end of his life. Between 1790 and 1795 Haydn made two acclaimed trips to London, where he briefly taught Beethoven. Haydn's works include more than 104 symphonies concertos operas oratorios ... "Rags to Riches"
Joseph Haydn's story begins on March 31, 1732, in a poor peasant home in Rohrau. (Rohrau was in what is now called Austria.) Joseph loved to sing and he had a good voice. In those days, being musically talented gave many poor boys a chance at a better life. When Haydn was six years old, he moved to Hainburg to live with a distant relative, Johann Mathias Franck. Franck was the church schoolmaster and choir director there. Franz Joseph Haydn became a choirboy. Two years later, he was selected to move to Vienna and sing in Karl Georg Reutters's choir. Joseph Haydn was eight years old. In that choir, Haydn became an expert at singing and sight-reading. He also learned to play instruments like the harpsichord, violin and organ.

He was the brother of Michael Haydn , himself a highly regarded composer, and Johann Evangelist Haydn , a tenor singer A life-long resident of Austria , Haydn spent most of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Eszterházy family, though very often the non-Hungarian spelling Esterhazy is used, on their remote estate. Haydn was born in 1732 in the Austrian village of Rohrau near the border with Hungary . His father was Matthias Haydn, a wheelwright who also served as 'Marktrichter', an office somewhat akin to village mayor. Neither parent could read music. However, Matthias was an enthusiastic

A kindly and fatherly figure, he was nicknamed 'Papa Haydn' and pitted along Vienna's best Classical composers: Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. I not only had the encouragement of constant approval but as conductor of an orchestra I could make experiments, observe what produced an effect and what weakened it, and...improve, alter, make additions, or omissions, and be as bold as I pleased." Austrian composer. Part of the so-called Viennese School, and important influence on both Mozart and Beethoven. Paris symphonies) and the twelve he wrote for the concert promoter Johann Peter Salomon in London (Nos. 93-104, called the London symphonies). His final works, mostly sacred music for his patron, culminated in two large oratorios, The Creation (1798) and The Seasons (1801), the former being one of his most famous works. Haydn is often referred to as "Papa" Haydn, and there is some justification for this. Although he did not invent either the symphony or the string quartet, he was a central figure in their development. His symphonies (especially the Paris and London sets) show a complete mastery of form and substance, setting the stage for the works of Mozart and Beethoven. Haydn's "paternity" is just as clear in the string quartets. Here Haydn helped transform the genre from little more than a string divertimento (with the emphasis on the top voice) to a type of chamber music in which all parts play an equal role. These ideas directly influenced Mozart, who responded with six quartets dedicated to Haydn (1782-85). Haydn's style is detectable in the early music of Beethoven as well.
