Lou Harrison
New Albion Records

For more than fifty years, Lou Harrison has explored music from across the centuries and around the world. Harrison spent most of his life in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he was influenced by everything from Cantonese Opera to Gregorian chants to traditional Mexican music. His early compositions dealt mainly with percussion, combining Western, Asian, African, and Latin American rhythmic influences with the unique sounds of his own homemade "junk" instruments. Early on in his career, Harrison studied composition with Henry Cowell , worked closely with John Cage , studied in Los Angeles with Arnold Schoenberg , and conducted the New York Little Symphony in the premiere of Charles Ives's Third Symphony Ives even shared his Pulitzer Prize with Harrison ). In addition to his work as a composer, Harrison maintains an interest in dance, theater, and puppetry.
The album La Koro Sutro (Esperanto for "the Heart Sutra," referring to the Buddhist heart of divine wisdom) presents works based on Harrison's explorations in the choral, orchestral, and gamelan musical realms.

Abstract
Biography
Betty Freeman was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1921 and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. She was graduated from Wellesley in 1942, where she had studied music. She later took classes at the Juilliard Institute. Freeman began her activities as a philanthropist and supporter of musicians in 1961 by contributing to a young musician's legal defense. Since then, she has assisted more than 30 contemporary composers. Beginning in 1964, Freeman has served on the board of "Encounters," the Pasadena Art Museum's concert program, and beginning in 1981, she hosted her Monday Evening Musicales, a venue for the new works of composers, in her Beverly Hills home. She is currently on the board of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, having supported for over a decade the orchestra's New Music Group until its close in 1991. Betty Freeman is an accomplished photographer. Her exhibit "Music People," a collection of photographs of leading figures in the world of contemporary music, toured internationally and was published as a book entitled MUSIC PEOPLE AND OTHERS (1987). She also produced a documentary film about Harry Partch entitled THE DREAMER THAT REMAINS (1972).

Lou Harrison: For Strings (2004) by Wu Man (pipa) The New Professionals Orchestra, London Rebecca Miller (conductor) About this title: Lou Harrison has in his catalog a small but not inconsiderable number of works for string orchestra, and outside of the New First Suite of 1995 the three works featured on this Mode release, Lou Harrison for Strings, represents everything Harrison originally conceived in this medium that he did not withdraw from public performance. The Concerto for pipa with string orchestra is performed by the redoubtable Wu Man, for whom it was written in 1997. This is possibly Harrison's finest concerto, with strongly contrasting sections incorporating some traditional gestures characteristic to the pipa ... read more Tracks:

        HARRISON, Lou 1917-2003.
Autograph letter signed, dated March 28, 1963.
Harrison, whose circle and influences included Charles Ives, Henry Cowell, John Cage, Virgil Thomson and Schoenberg, "was recognized particularly for his percussion music, experiments with just intonation and syntheses of Asian and Western styles. His works employed Chinese, Korean and Indonesian instruments as well as Western instruments and those of his own construction. Harrison's style was marked by a notable melodicism: even his percussion and 12-note compositions have a decidedly lyrical flavour." Leta E. Miller in Grove online Item Id:

TAPE 5A LOUIS KAPLAN, PHYSICIST Lou began by pointing out that all Evans employees worked under high security. He started working for $2000/yr; one of his grandchildren now earns $62,000/yr. A Bendix employee offered Lou a job with a Newark company, manufacturing light bulbs, where he worked until, he received a security clearance from Ft. Monmouth and was offered a job there at the Evan's Area. Then Lou was ordered to report to the Communications lab, where a Colonel informed him of job termination as a result of Senator McCarthy's purge
Lou identified George Rose, a scientist at Harrison Corp, whose crew built the first subminiaturized tube and the first Cathode Ray Tube. Lou had suggested 3 ideas relating to this work and George already had these in his "Little Box" Lou was in contact with Princeton re: finding noise source and receiver calibration. He met and communicated with top management personnel there and at Harrison. Lou stated that he became expert on noise detection and receivers.

Harrison, Lou (1917-2003) American composer Lou Harrison enjoyed a long and distinguished career. He is particularly well known for his use of instruments from the East, especially the Javanese gamelan, and for his melodic and lyrical musical style, despite the fact that he studied composition in the atonal musical style of Arnold Schoenberg. One of America's most original and articulate composers, Harrison explored a number of interests, including puppetry, Esperanto, tuning systems, the construction of musical instruments, and dance. He was also actively involved in political causes, especially pacifism and gay rights. Sponsor Message.
He was born Lou Silver Harrison in Portland, Oregon, on May 14, 1917, but his family moved to the San Francisco Bay area when he was a child, and he lived most of his life on the West Coast of the United States. As a child he was exposed to a wide range of music, including Cantonese operas, Gregorian chants, and Spanish and Mexican music. Harrison attended San Francisco State University, where he decided on music as his major and his life's work. He studied there with Henry Cowell and quickly became fascinated with melody and its powers, particularly in the music of the Orient. He also developed an interest in the works of American composer Charles Ives, some of whose musical manuscripts he later edited.
