    HANDEL, GEORGE FRIDERIC (1685 - 1759)
Born in the German town of Halle in 1685, Handel studied briefly at the University of Halle, before moving to Hamburg in 1703, where he served as a violinist in the opera orchestra and subsequently as harpsichordist and composer. From 1706 until 1710 he was in... (more info) Operas Oratorios Messiah is by far the best known of all English oratorios. Its three parts deal with the birth, passion and resurrection of Christ, using a text in part derived from the Bible and from the version of the Psalms familiar from the Church of England Book of Common Prayer. The work was completed and first performed in 1742 and later repeated annually in London in aid of the Foundling Hospital. Israel in Egypt, Judas Maccabaeus, Samson, based on Milton, and Solomon are only some of the English oratorios of Handel that are familiar in whole or in part to choirs and audiences. To these may be added the secular oratorio Semele, with a text by the dramatist William Congreve, dealing with an episode from classical mythology and including, for a disguised Jupiter, the well known aria Where'er you walk.

    George Frideric Handel, London, 1741
    British Library R.M.20.f.2., f.132v
Messiah , written in 1741, remains Handel's best-loved composition, with its famous 'Hallelujah Chorus' performed by choirs the world over. The first performance in Dublin in 1742 was a triumph, but it was not so favourably received in London, until a performance at Thomas Coram's Foundling Hospital in Bloomsbury. Handel was born in Germany, but settled in London in 1712. Messiah established his popularity at a time when he was considering leaving England because of his lack of operatic success. The manuscript is written entirely in the composer's hand. Composer of the Month - January, 2005 George Frideric Handel,1685-1759
by Daryl Lee Of no one else would Ludwig van Beethoven say, "[he] is the greatest composer who ever lived. I would bare my head and kneel at his grave." No other composer in the Baroque era was as prolific or had the mastery of so many genres of musical composition as had George Frideric Handel. American audiences know him best for Messiah (what would Christmas be without the Hallelujah chorus?) but in his time he was recognized throughout Europe as the standard-setter for oratorio and opera, as well as less grandiose genres such as motets, anthems, and instrumental chamber works. The MOS has frequently included Handel in its performances: Hallelujah in the 2004 Christmas concert, choruses and arias from Messiah in 2002, and Coronation Anthems in 2002 and 1996. Handel was born near Halle, Germany, to a barber-surgeon who intended that he study law. But Handel discovered a harpsichord and against his father's wishes taught himself to play it. On a visit to his step-brother, who was a valet to the Duke of Saxe-Weissenfels, Handel discovered the organ in the Duke's chapel. The Duke overheard him playing and insisted that Handel receive a proper musical education. At the ripe old age of seven years, Handel's formal career in music began.

    Biographical Sketch
James S. Hall (1899-1975) was a surgeon by profession but an ardent Handel scholar and collector by avocation. In addition to the Handel scores and libretti the Princeton University Library acquired Hall's correspondence with performers, composers, conductors, scholars and other collectors of his heyday, the 1950s and 60s. As the founder and manager of the Deal and Walmer Handelian Society, Hall was responsible for arranging performances of Handel's works, for public celebrations of Handel's achievements, such as the mounting of the plaque in Dublin on the hall where

    The Heresy that Wouldn't Die
... Buy the book containing this and many other profiles of Christians you should know. Musicians, Artists, and Writers George Frideric Handel Composer of Messiah "He [Handel] would frequently declare the pleasure he felt in setting the Scriptures to music, and how contemplating the many sublime passages in the Psalms had contributed to his edification." By 1741 George Frideric Handel was a failure. Bankrupted, in great physical pain, and the victim of plots to sabotage his career, the once-great opera composer scheduled a "farewell" appearance in London in April. To the London elite, it looked like this "German nincompoop," as he was once called, was through. That summer, however, he composed Messiah , which not only brought him back into the spotlight, but is still deemed by some to be "an epitome of Christian faith." Opposition begins Unlike Handel's fellow countryman and contemporary Johann Bach (the two were born the same year but never met), Handel never had a musical family. George's father was a practical "surgeon-barber" who discouraged his son's musical career at every turn. His son was to be a lawyer. Indeed, George studied law until 1703, even though his father (who finally allowed his son to take music lessons at age 9) died when he was 11. By age 12, Handel was substituting for his organ teacher and had written his first composition.

    George Frideric Handel (1685-1759)
No musicians in his family. He became an accomplished organist and harpischordist, studied violin and oboe. He gave up a career in a church to go to Hamburg (center of German opera) for opera. Composed his first opera at age of nineteen. Handel enjoyed some early success in the field of opera, but it was the oratorio that made him famous. He composed "Messiah" in 1741. "Messiah" is a great work for orchestra, chorus and soloists. The text is taken from the Bible and forms a dramatic commentary on the whole prophecy and fullfillment of the redemption of man. It is in three parts: 1) the prophecy and coming of the Messiah, 2) the redemption of mankind through the sacrifice of Jesus, 3) thanksgiving for the ultimate defeat of death through faith in the kingdom of God.
    Messiah
Handel composed Messiah in approximately three weeks in August and September 1741. It is an oratorio of arias, recitatives and choruses without the usual narrative of other oratorios. It is more choral than other oratoriosthe choir plays a major role in this work. The text is a juxtaposition of passages from both the Old and New Testament as assembled by Charles Jennens, a poet and wealthy patron of the arts. Messiah is in three parts: part one brings various texts concerning Advent and Christmas, revealing the expectation of the birth of the Saviour, and his actual coming; part two deals with His Passion, not directly as in Bach's St. Matthew Passion, but in a contemplative kind of way, ending with the triumphant Resurrection, and the Hallelujah chorus; part three deals with the resurrection and extends it to all mankind, ending with the Amen chorus.

    Introduction
Print this section George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), German-born composer, who worked primarily in England, considered one of the most important masters of the baroque period (from about 1600 to 1750). Handel and his German contemporary Johann Sebastian Bach are considered the greatest composers of the early 18th century. Their music represents the culmination of musical genres of the baroque era. Whereas Bach’s output consisted chiefly of instrumental and vocal works originally conceived for Lutheran church services, Handel’s most important works are his operas and oratorios, composed for the theater. The most famous of these is Messiah

    GEORGE FRIDERIC HANDEL
Born: February 23, 1685. Halle, Germany
Died: April 14, 1759. London, England
English composer, German by birth. Composed in all genres, but primarily remembered for his operas and oratorios.

George Frideric Handel began his life in Germany, the son of a barber-surgeon who wanted him to study law. He died an English citizen, the most renowned musical figure of his day and a national treasure. The career that led him there was, in almost every way, a complete contrast to that of his contemporary and fellow countryman, Johann Sebastian Bach (born less than a month after him). Where Bach composed for the church and for his patrons, Handel composed for the general public. Where Bach was primarily of man of God, Handel was a man of the world. And where Bach was a man who never left his native country, Handel was a world traveler.
Handel showed great musical talent at an early age, and his father allowed him to study with a local organist and composer. At age seventeen, the young Handel went to Hamburg, where he played violin in the opera orchestra. He was soon composing in the Italian style that he heard and played, and his first opera, Almira , was a rousing success. The next three years were spent in Italy, where his operas were extremely popular and where he continued to perfect his operatic style. He returned to Germany in 1710 to take the post of music director for the elector of Hanover, but almost immediately was invited to England to produce his opera
