21. George Frideric Handel: His Story From Germany To England
george Frideric handel Life and work in Germany and England, at Court, his operas and oratorios. Many music samples.
http://www.baroquemusic.org/bqxhandel.html
BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS George Frideric Handel Georg Friederich Händel was born in 1685, a vintage year indeed for baroque composers, in Halle on the Saale river in Thuringia, Germany on February 23rd. From Germany to England – via Italy. Though his father had intended him for the law, Handel's own musical inclinations seem always to have been clear to him. At the age of 18, in 1703, he traveled to Hamburg, where he took a job as a violinist at the Hamburg Opera and gave private lessons to support himself. He became acquainted with Johann Mattheson (who later chronicled the known events of Handel's life during his stay there) and together they visited Buxtehude in Lübeck in that first year. In the new year Handel's first two operas were produced, Almira and Nero Whilst in Hamburg, Handel made the acquaintance of Prince Ferdinando de' Medici, son and heir of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, who invited Handel to visit Italy where he spent more than three years, in Florence, Rome, Naples and Venice. By 1706 he had reached Rome, where Marquis (later Prince) Francesco Ruspoli employed him as a household musician and where most of Handel's major Italian works were composed. This visit was significant; baroque music, like that of any period, has its musical clichés, and much that is typical of baroque music can be traced back to Italy and particularly to Corelli, with whom Handel had studied. The influence of Italy was to show itself in Handel's lifetime preoccupation with opera – as well as Italian operatic "stars". His Concerti Grossi too, bear witness to the influence of Italy and Corelli.

Born in Halle (50 miles from Eisenach, Bach's birthplace) in the same year as Bach, Handel studied with Zachau , and became a friend of Mattheson . In 1703 he was appointed violinist-composer for Hamburg's German opera. Handel sojourned in Italy in 1706 where he met Corelli , and both Scarlattis ( Alessandro and Domenico ). His return to Hanover, four years later, was to assume the post of Kapellmeister to the Elector (soon to become king George I of England). In 1712 Handel moved to London where, upon the accession of the house of Hanover, two years later, he gained immediate access to the royal circle of England. In 1717 Handel succeeded Pepusch as chapel master to the Duke of Chandos. Handel's London years were occupied primarily with the writing of Italian operas. After suffering a stroke and the failure of his operas (largely because of the success of the Beggar's Opera), Handel wrote oratorios , including "Messiah" (1741). Handel's eyesight failed him in later years and he eventually became completely blind. In addition to operas and oratorios, Handel wrote

      About
Even if you think of a cinematic pooch when the word Beethoven is mentioned you have probably heard Handel's Messiah "Hallelujah!! Hallelujah!!" blasting away at the local mall at Christmas time. This stunning piece illustrates Handel's mastery of the big choral numbers that were gaining in popularity with the rising eighteenth century bourgeois class. Handel was a master at composing operas, but these oratorios were easier to stage and perform and cheaper to attend for the new British middle class, who embraced Handel's music with great enthusiasm.

German court musicians, as late as the time of Mozart Buxtehude , who was retiring on account of his extreme age. Handel and Matheson made much music on this occasion, but did not compete, because they found that the successful candidate was required to accept the hand of the elderly daughter of the retiring organist. Another adventure might have had still more serious consequences. At a performance of Matheson's opera Cleopatra at Hamburg, Handel refused to give up the conductor's seat to the composer when the latter returned to his usual post at the harpsichord after singing the part of Antony on the stage. The dispute led to a duel outside the theater, and, but for a large button on Handel's coat which intercepted Matheson's sword, there would have been no

Handel Biography In 1710 (age 25, he returned to ermany but soon left for England. Here he continued to write operas and sacred choral music, now with English instead of Italian texts. After a brief return to Germany in 1712, he moved back to England, where he lived for the rest of his life. He became a British citizn in 1726. In 1720 (age 35), Handel was named artistic irector of a new opera company, the Royal Acadamy of Music. During the next seven years, he wrote 14 operas for this group, as well as sverla oratorios. He also conducted the performances of his own operas. When the Royal Academy went bankrupt in 1728, he formed his own opera company for which he wrote 13 more operas. In 1737 this company also failed. Financially, Handel lost everything and suffered a stroke. It was the lowest point of his life, and he never totally regained his health. At the age of 53, Handel virtually gave up writing operas and turned his attention to oratorios. His oratorios, all in English, were Hugely successful and popular in England and Ireland. He wrote his most famous oratorio, Messiah , in 1742, and it was an immediate success. Handel was blunt and outsoken, and a tyrannical conductor of his music. But he was an honorable and respected composer, and except for the failure of his opera company he handled his finances well. He took his work seriously an wrote rapidly; in fact, he composed almost as fast as he could copy the notes. George Handel wrote his first vocal music in German, his first operas in Italian, and his most famous oratorios in English. No other composer of vocal music has successfully written vocal music in so many languages. To listen to the famous
