From LoveToKnow 1911
GEORGE FREDERICK HANDEL (1685-1759), English musical composer, German by origin, was born at Halle in Lower. Saxony , on the 23rd of February 1685. His name Life was Handel, but, like most 18th-century musicians who travelled, he compromised with its pronunciation by foreigners, and when in Italy spelt it Hendel, and in England (where he became naturalized) accepted the version Handel, which is therefore correct for English writers, while H¤ndel remains the correct version in Germany . His father was a barber -surgeon, who disapproved of music , and wished George Frederick to become a lawyer. A friend smuggled a clavichord into the attic , and on this instrument, which is inaudible behind a closed door , the little boy practised secretly. Before he was eight his father went to visit a son by a former marriage who was a valet -de-chambre to the duke of Saxe- Weissenfels . The little boy begged in vain to go also, and at last ran after the carriage on foot so far that he had to be taken. He made acquaintance with the court musicians and contrived to practise on the organ when he could be overheard by the duke, who, immediately recognizing his talent , spoke seriously to the father, who had to yield to his arguments. On returning to Halle Handel became a pupil of Zachau, the

George Frederic Handel
A Masterpiece of Faith For twenty-four days, George Frideric Handel had not left his house. His servant brought him trays of food, but he ate only a little. Completely immersed in composition and Bible reading, he let nothing deter him from the colossal work at hand. As he put the finishing touches on the "Hallelujah Chorus," he turned to his servant with tears in his eyes and exclaimed: "I did think I did see all Heaven before me, and the great God Himself!" One day, nine-year-old Handel was asked to play the organ postlude at a royal church service. His playing was so brilliant that he caught the notice of a duke, who pressed Handel's reluctant father to let him take formal lessons. His father agreed, and Handel went to study with the organist at their local church. It wasn't long before Handel could take his place at the organ. By eighteen, Handel was a mature composer with a growing reputation. Many critics agree that Handel was at his best when he composed religious music. Patrick Kavanaugh writes in

One of the greatest composers of the late baroque period (1700-1750) and, during his lifetime, perhaps the most internationally famous of all musicians.
London Opera Career
Oratorios
In 1738 Handel, as determined as ever, began yet another operatic endeavor, which ended with his last opera, Deidamia, in 1741. During the 1730s, however, the most important directions taken by Handel were, first, the composition of English dramatic oratorios, notably Athalia (1733) and Saul (1739); and, second, the surge of instrumental music used in conjunction with the oratorios, including some of Handel's greatest concertos-the solo concertos of op. 4 (1736, five for organ and one for harp) and the 12 concerti grossi of op. 6 (1739). In 1742 Messiah, the work for which he is best known, was first performed in Dublin. Handel continued composing oratorios at the rate of about two a year, including such masterworks as Samson (1743) and Solomon (1749), until 1751, when his eyesight began to fail. Handel died in London on April 14, 1759; the last musical performance he heard, on April 6, was of his own Messiah.

HANDEL, GEORGE FRIDERIC BIOGRAPHY
Operas Oratorios Messiah is by far the best known of all English oratorios. Its three parts deal with the birth, passion and resurrection of Christ, using a text in part derived from the Bible and from the version of the Psalms familiar from the Church of England Book of Common Prayer. The work was completed and first performed in 1742 and later repeated annually in London in aid of the Foundling Hospital. Israel in Egypt, Judas Maccabaeus, Samson, based on Milton, and Solomon are only some of the English oratorios of Handel that are familiar in whole or in part to choirs and audiences. To these may be added the secular oratorio Semele, with a text by the dramatist William Congreve, dealing with an episode from classical mythology and including, for a disguised Jupiter, the well known aria Where'er you walk. Church Music Handel wrote music for the Catholic liturgy in 1707, when he was in Rome. In England, under the patronage of the Duke of Chandos, he wrote a set of anthems, the so-called Chandos Anthems. The four Coronation Anthems, written for the coronation of George II in 1727, represent music for a royal ceremonial occasion at its most impressive. Other settings for the Anglican liturgy include the Utrecht Te Deum of 1713, celebrating the Peace of Utrecht, and the Dettingen Te Deum, a celebration of the victory of Dettingen over the French army in 1743.

He served as second violinist in the Hamburg Opera Orchestra and subsequently as harpsichordist and composer. From 1706 until 1710 he was in Italy, where he soon mastered the Italian musical styles and techniques and where he met Scarlatti in Rome. Then he was appointed kapellmeister to the court of the Elector of Hanover and, in the same year, he visited London where his opera "Rinaldo" enjoyed great success. He liked England so much he settled there permantly two years later and in 1726 became a naturalised English citizen. When his former patron, the Elector of Hanover, became King George I of England, he won favour with the court and was given a life pension. He wrote and produced dozens of operas for various English companies in which he had a financial stake. The decline of the Italian operatic style left Handel bankrupt and to extricate himself he began to compose oratorias with English texts.

Ariosti and the jealousy of Bononcini . The Elector Friedrich offered to defray the expense of his musical education in Italy; but Handel's father declined, and returned with the boy to Halle. The following year (1697) the father died, and Handel after completing his studies at the gymnasium, entered Halle University (1702-3) as stud. jur. (in pious fulfillment of his father's desire), occupying, at the same time, the position of organist at the Moritzburg Calvinistic cathedral, with a salary of $50 a year, In 1703, however, he went to Hamburg, where he was engaged as violino di ripieno by Keiser , the director of the German opera, When Keiser was temporarily obliged to hide from his creditors, Handel took his place at the harpsichord with such skill that he was engaged permanently as clavecinist. His friendship with Telemann , the composer, and Mattheson, subsequently his biographer, was begun here. He wrote a Passion to words by Postel, and brought out two operas, Almira and Nero (1705); he was also commissioned by Keiser's successor, Saurbrey, to write
