Adam's other nicknames, "le Bossu d'Arras" and "Adam d'Arras", suggest that he came from Arras, France . The sobriquet "the Hunchback " was probably a family name; Adam himself points out that he was not one. His father, Henri de le Hale , was a well-known Citizen of Arras, and Adam studied grammar theology , and music at the Cistercian abbey of Vaucelles , near Cambrai . Father and son had their share in the civil discords in Arras, and for a short time took refuge in Douai . Adam had been destined for the church, but renounced this intention, and married a certain Marie, who figures in many of his songs, rondeaux motets and jeux-partis . Afterwards he joined the household of Robert II, count of Artois

Middle Ages Composer Index Adam de la Halle presents a biographical puzzle for historians. Since few documents survive to tell us who he was and what he did in his life, we must rely on autobiographical references in his poetry to piece together his biography. In addition, what we do know about his life and works makes it hard for us to fit him into a tidy historical niche. He was at once a composer ahead of his time and a composer looking back at older ideas.

Jeu de Robin et Marion, performed at Naples in 1275 or 1285. This play with songs and dialogue pieces is sometimes called 'the first comic opera'. It is not known whether the melodies are folksongs or the composer's own (though he certainly wrote the texts) or whether instruments were used to accompany the voices. It is a naive dramatic pastoral with many short songs sung by the leading actors. It went down in the history of French literature as the secular Singspiel, or song-play. His gracefully turned melodies typify the charm of the art of the troubadours.
Adam's rondeaux usually express a love theme, as do his troubadour compositions. The structure of the rondeaux, solo voiced "couplets" alternating with multi-voiced "refrains," shows that they too are based on the traditional folksong.

Polyphony of Adam de la Halle
Here is my collection of the motets and rondeaux of Adam de la Halle. I only set the polyphony because it's metrical and so is better suited to a mechanical reproduction. I transcribed these pieces from the original notation (Well, OK, from a facsimile of a copy of the original notation, as found in Oeuvres Compl¨tes du Trouv¨re Adam de la Halle , published in Paris in 1872), after studiously reading and rereading the pertinent chapters in The Notation of Polyphonic Music 900-1600 by Willi Apel. You will notice that there are two versions of most of the songs. This is because I was wishy-washy on the value of the semibreve, and couldn't decide whether to make it equal to one-half of a breve, as it had been in the first part of the thirteenth century, or equal to one-third or two-thirds of a breve, as was declared by Franco of Cologne in Ars cantus mensurabilis So I set every piece that has semibreves both ways. You can decide for yourselves which you prefer. I set the music in abc notation.  I created the midi files with abc2midi, and the pdf files with jacabc2ps and ImageMagick.  (I modified jcabc2ps slightly to make it easier to set motets.)
