    and the Indian Fantasy
The Indian themes Curtis published caught the attention of other musicians and composers interested in folk music, including Percy Grainger, Kurt Schindler, and Ferruccio Busoni. Grainger and Curtis became good friends, and Grainger continued to use Curtis's arrangements in his concerts and lectures throughout his career. In Europe as a teenager, Curtis had studied briefly with Busoni, and he had continued to follow her work. In 1911, Busoni asked Curtis to send him a selection of Indian melodies that might serve as suitable themes for an experimental composition. He used the melodies she sent as themes for his Indian Fantasy. Curtis heard this piece performed for the first time in 1915 by the Philadelphia Orchestra under the direction of Leopold Stokowski, with Busoni himself at the piano. Sitting with Curtis there at the initial rehearsal at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia was Percy Grainger. Busoni, Grainger, and Curtis were all interested in the use of folk themes in composition. "With the first bars of the orchestral introduction ...," wrote Curtis, "the walls melted away, and I was in the West, filled again with that awing sense of vastness, of solitude, of immensity." At least two themes Curtis recorded in The Indians' Book are readily discerned in the Indian Fantasy The Pima "Bluebird Song" and one of the Cheyenne "Hand-Game" songs.

He studied in Frankfurt before beginning a successful career as a concert pianist in England at the turn of the century. His first compositions were experimental in nature, culminating with Hill Song I in 1902. He subsequently modified his style in the popular British Folk-Music Settings and the Room-Music Tit-Bits
In 1914 he sailed for America and took up residence, becoming an American citizen after a period in the US army. He toured North America, Europe, South Africa and Australia on several occasions, setting up the Grainger Museum in the grounds of Melbourne University during visits to Australia in the 1930’s.
He had a musical mind of unusual breadth and vision, with interests spanning the ages from Mediaeval music to the latest twentieth century developments. With Dom Anselm Hughes and Arnold Dolmetsch he made modern transcriptions of early music; in later life he devoted his energies to the design and construction of Free Music machines on which a composer could write his music as graphs on transparent sheets to be performed by the machine free of restrictions on rhythm and pitch.
In his own compositions he was mainly a miniaturist, though he composed a number of larger works including

(more info) The Australian pianist and composer Percy Grainger, an eccentric figure, may seem of marginal importance. Nevertheless he wrote a number of works that continue to give considerable pleasure, as do some of the remarkable arrangements that he devised. He became a friend of Grieg and of Delius and took a strong interest in the active collection of folk-songs. He gave particular attention to the creation of music not bound by the traditional restraints of form and harmony. In 1918 he became an American citizen.

    Percy Aldridge Grainger
    Champion of the Folksong
By Scott D. Farquhar 10 May 1995 During his lifetime, Percy Grainger was best known as a concert pianist of great talent and stature. He was the chief interpreter of the piano concerto of Edvard Grieg, and even developed a close friendship with the Norwegian composer. Lesser known as a composer and arranger, his more popular works are of a lighter, frivolous, and crowd-pleasing nature. His more serious original works are finally starting to be examined and appreciated for their value. His greatest achievements, however, are in the realm of folksong collecting and arranging. This genre of music for the common folk permeated his career as a performer and composer as well. Folksong had an undeniably strong influence on him, and he in turn had a strong influence on its preservation and its elevation into a musical genre worthy of serious academic investigation. Percy Grainger was born in Melbourne, Australia on July 8, 1882 to John Harry Grainger, an architect, and Rose Annie Aldridge. His musical training began at age five on the piano. He practiced two hours a day under the tutelage of his extremely formidable mother for five years. Rose became responsible for young Percy's entire education when he refused to return to school after witnessing his classmates torment some hapless animal. He developed a fondness for Anglo-Saxon and old Norse literature such as Beowulf and the Icelandic sagas. At age ten he began studying with Louis Pabst and gave his first public recital at age twelve on July 9, 1894 at the Melbourne Masonic Hall.

    Percy Grainger
Rough Guides Music November, 2001 Content provided
in partnership with Percy Grainger is one of twentieth-century music's strangest figures, a man whose eccentricity, both in his music and in his life, teetered on the brink of insanity. Possessing enormous energy and a restless, inquisitive mind, he produced compositions that frequently employ weird instrumental combinations in unconventional musical forms. Yet he is best known for a handful of unremittingly jolly folk-song arrangements like English Country Gardens or Molly on the Shore . To explore his output a little more deeply is to discover much that is dark and disturbing, though rarely in a way comparable to any of his fin de si¨cle contemporaries. Only the music of Charles Ives emits a similar uneasy tension between the desire to be both experimental and easily expressive.

    The Percy Grainger Composition Prize
While visiting New Zealand in 1935 the eminent composer-pianist, Percy Grainger, announced a prize for an original New Zealand composition. Douglas won this prize with his tone poem for orchestra called Forest . In November 1935 Mr. Grainger recorded a brief talk SA/NTK D-440] which was then broadcast by the New Zealand Broadcasting Board.
Forest will be performed for the first time since 1937, on 28 May 2003 by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in the Wellington Town Hall, and broadcast live on Concert FM
"The turning point I suppose was that Percy Grainger prize ... I was a third year student doing orchestration for the first time when I wrote this piece called Forest and put it in, and to my astonishment a few months later a reporter and a photographer turned up on the doorstep. After that it was fame. You know the sweet taste of fame, never had it so good since.
It gave me 25 pounds. What that was worth in those days I don't know, but it was enough to impress my family that there might be a bit of money in it you know. Not only that but my father had a letter from the President of the Farmers' Union congratulating him on his son's musical success. And I think it shook him a bit because he couldn't believe it. He used to say, if it had to be music couldn't it be the bagpipes!" - Extract from Jack Body's interview with Douglas (ca 1980).

Barbara Hershey was really only expecting to do some work on her Aussie accent - which, in the finished film, is actually very impressive - when she asked Richard Roxburgh, her co-star in Passion , to send her some study tapes.
" Passion is like a sonata about Percy Grainger. It is romantic and it's dark and it's historical "
