Charles Gounod Biography
Charles Gounod Charles François Gounod French composer , best known for his opera Faust Gounod was born in Paris and learned music with his mother as a child. He entered the Paris Conservatoire where he studied under Fromental Halévy . He won the Prix de Rome in 1839 for his cantata Ferdinand . He subsequently went to Italy where he studied the music of Palestrina Caricature from Punch, 1882 Gounod wrote his first opera in 1851, but had no great success until Faust (1859), based on the play by Goethe . This remains his best known work, although the opera Roméo et Juliette (based on the Shakespeare play ), premiered in 1867, is also performed and recorded regularly. Later in his life, Gounod wrote mainly religious music, including the song Ave Maria , which was based on the first prelude from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach Gounod died in 1893 in Saint-Cloud in France.

A totally tranked out Roberto Alagna trying to defend his innocence (and his hairy thighs) from Anna Bananna's impure thoughts & horny hands; and, a great shot of Anna Netrebko togged to teh bricks in Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette" the other night. Alagna's Antics and Netrebko's Triumph: Rom©o et Juliette at the Metropolitan Opera
Certainly no booing last night , as The Metropolitan Opera’s packed house of Gounod's Rom©o et Juliette la prima seemed to be comprised of both Alagna’s and Netrebko’s fan club entourages. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Alagna was off to a strong start in front of the packed house, and although he impressed quickly, he tired noticeably, tampering-out shortly before the first intermission. Fair enough, since this performance has funky breaks, and finally splices a proper intermission only after the first two hours have elapsed. Rom©o’s stage exits, as just about every single egress was marked with a quick sprint off the stage into the darkness of the wings. He was srsly channeling Napoleon Dynamite.

Biography
The genius of the great composer was, however, destined to assert itself in another fieldthat of sacred music. His friend Camille Saint-Sans, in a volume entitled Portraits el Souvenirs, wntes:
Gouriod did not cease all his life to write for the church, to accumulate masses and motetts; but it was at the commencement of his career, in the Messe de Salute Ccile, and at the end, in the oratorios The Redemption and Mors et vita, that he rose highest.
Gounod died at St Cloud on the 18th of October 1893. His ,influence on French music was immense, though during the last years of the i9th century it was rather counterbalanced by that of Wagner. Whatever may be the verdict of posterity, it is unlikely that the quality of individuality will be denied to Gounod. To be the composer of Faust is alone a sufficient title to lasting fame. (A. HE.)
