Executive summary: Faust Palestrina and Bach Sapho , the work in question, was produced in 1851, and if its success was not very great, it at least sufficed to bring the composer's name to the fore. Some critics appeared to consider this work as evidence of a fresh departure in the style of dramatic music, and Adolphe Adam, the composer, who was also a musical critic, attributed to Gounod the wish to revive the system of musical declamation invented by Gluck . The fact was that Sapho Sapho once more failed to attract the public. Gounod's second dramatic attempt was again in connection with a classical subject, and consisted in some choruses written for Ulysse Jacques Offenbach . The composer's next opera

Brief biography of Charles Gounod, his life, career, operas and sacred music. Famous for opera Faust and religious music 'Ave Maria,' instrumental and soprano voice.
A prolific composer of operas and sacred music, French composer Charles Gouned (1818-1893), is best remembered today for his opera Faust , based on Goethe's drama, and for the song "Ave Maria", an arrangement of his Meditation for violin on Bach's Prelude No.1 in C
Early Years: Training, Education and Influence
Gounod's father was a painter and his mother a pianist, in which he had early piano lessons. His grandfather (mother's father) was a professor of piano at the Paris Corservatoire. He studied for priesthood for a while but abandoned the plan. Like Berlioz, he studied at the Paris Conservatoire, winning the Prix de Rome in 1839. In Italy he fell under the spell of 16th century polyphonic music, and began to write sacred music for this own. Felix Mendelssohn.

Charles Gounod, born in Paris on June 18, 1818 was the son of a talented but unsuccessful painter who died when Gounod was four. Gounod's mother, also an artist, kept up his father's classes while also giving music lessons. Gounod displayed a talent in both art and music. He began composing at the age of twelve, and left art in favor of music by the age of thirteen. This decision was prompted in part by a performance of Rossini's Othello that had moved him greatly. Entering the conservatory in 1836, Gounod was highly successful. He won the coveted Prix de Rome three years later. Gounod developed a keen interest in Rome. He discovered and began a serious study of 16th century sacred music. The beauty of the sacred music prompted Gounod to lifelong religious interests, and he had difficultly deciding between entering the church and continuing with secular music. In 1843, Gounod returned to Paris to accept his first position as musical director of the Chapel for Foreign Missions. Still in a state of religious confusion, Gounod entered the Carmelite monastery as a noviate in 1847. Gounod was not entirely suited to the religious profession, and was referred to by some as "the philandering monk."

      About
Charles Gounod was a French composer who was born in Paris in 1818 and studied at the Paris Conservatoire. His works for the stage brought French opera to new heights and had indelible influence on the succeeding generation of French composers, including Bizet, Faure and especially Massenet. As a young man, he considered joining the priesthood and his fervent spiritual life is evident in his supple 1885 work

Died: October 18, 1893 - Saint-Cloud, France Ferdinand . He subsequently went to Italy where he studied the music of Palestrina. He concentrated on religious music of the 16 th century.
Charles Gounod eventually returned to Paris and composed the Messe Sollennelle , also known as the Saint Cecilia Mass . This work was first performed in London during 1851 and began his reputation as a noteworthy composer. He wrote two symphonies in 1855. His Symphony No.1 in D major was the inspiration for Georges Bizet 's (who was then Gounod's 17 year old student) Symphony No. 1 in C, composed later that same year. Despite their charm and brilliance, Gounod's symphonies are seldom performed.
Charles Gounod wrote his first opera, Sappho , in 1851, but had no great success until Faust (1859), based on the play by Goethe. This remains his best-known work. The romantic and highly melodious (based on the Shakespeare play), premiered in 1867, is also performed and recorded regularly. The charming and highly individual Mireille of 1864 is admired by connoisseurs. There is some controversy surrounding Faust . Many critics believed it was a far advancement over Gounod's prior works. One critic stated his doubt that Gounod composed it, which prompted Gounod to challenge the critic to a duel. The critic withdrew his statement.
