The Choral-Orchestra Library is located in Room 306 of Smith Memorial Hall.   • extraordinarily talented and versatile American composer and conductor; b. Richmond Hill, N.Y., Dec. 10, 1913; d. Orlando, Fla., Feb. 21, 1996. Gould's father was Austrian and his mother Russian, and both fostered their son's early interest in music. If the affectionate family memories are to be accepted as fact, Gould composed a piano waltz at the age of six (indeed, it was ultimately published under the title Just 6 Gould had piano lessons with the noted teachers JOSEPH KARDOS and ABBY WHITESIDE. He later enrolled in the composition class of VINCENT JONES at N.Y. University where, at the age of 16, he presented a concert of his works. To support himself, he played piano in silent movies and in jazz bands, accompanied dancers, and gave demonstrations of musical skill on college circuits. In 1931-32 he served as staff pianist at Radio City Music Hall in N.Y. From 1934 to 1946 he was in charge of the series "Music for Today" on the Mutual Radio network, and in 1943 became music director of the lucrative "Chrysler Hour" on CBS Radio. These contacts gave great impetus to Gould's bursting talent for composing singable, playable, and enjoyable light pieces. His
