Born in Erasbach on July 2, 1714, Gluck was the son of a gamekeeper. He studied music at the Jesuit seminary at Komotau (now Chomutov, Czech Republic) and also in Prague and Milan. In Milan he studied with the Italian composer Giovanni Battista Sammartini . Gluck's first opera, Artaserse, was produced at La Scala , Milan, in 1741. During the following nine years he wrote and produced approximately 16 operas in various European cities. Among these works were Sofonisba (1744) and Artamene (1746). In 1750 he took up residence in Vienna, which was thereafter the centre of his activities except for periods spent in Naples, Rome, and Paris. In 1754 Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria, appointed him director of opera at her court theatre. Among the operas Gluck wrote between 1750 and 1760 were

Please be patient! The Portraits of Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck I doubt that there is any major composer, of the 18th century at least, who receives shoddier treatment than Christoph Willibald Ritter von Gluck (1714 - 1787), the composer who epitomizes better than any other the inexorable transition from the Baroque to the Classical, the composer who freed opera from the "drama of stasis" principles that are the essence of the opera seria , an approach to the composition of musical dramas that reached its zenith in the remarkable series of operas created by the unsurpassable George Frideric Handel , with whom Gluck had a "close encounter" in London in 1745. I recall with sadness how little attention was paid to Gluck during the bicentenary of his death in 1787. The world had commemorated the tercentenary of the births of Johann Sebastian Bach George Frideric Handel , and Domingo Scarlatti in 1985 with stupendous hoopla and oceans of "hype", but the 200th anniversary of the death of the composer of

Last Night For Iphig©nie
Last week, during the sometimes-painful Robert Carsen's production of Candide , Opera Chic tried to fight the boredom by doing many things: by leafing through a copy of Japanese Vogue , peeling an orange, and thinking about how brilliant, no, how BRILLIANT Carsen is when he doesn't try to do political theatre which, fo' reals, is so not his cup of tea. Carsen's genius for the dramatic vision and for detail that will break your heart is what makes him one of the (very, very few) greatest opera directors working today, a true man of vision in a business of so many charlatans that only know how to replace their lack of ideas with cheap stunts. Carsen's Iphig©nie En Tauride (a production seen last October in Chicago , it closes tonight in San Francisco ) is an example of that. And how emotionally devastating an experience must be to watch Susan Graham on that stark black stage, as naked as Iphigenie's sorrow ( Bay Area Reporter review here , San Francisco Sentinel review here , the Examiner 's here Posted by opera chic on June 29, 2007 at 03:05 PM in

(born: Erasbach, 2 July 1714; died: Vienna, 15 Nov 1787). Bohemian-German composer. His father was a forester in the Upper Palatinate (now the western extreme of Czechoslovakia); Czech was his native tongue. At about 14 he left home to study in Prague, where he worked as an organist. He soon moved to Vienna and then to Milan, where his first opera was given in 1741. Others followed, elsewhere in Italy and during 1745-6 in London, where he met Handel's music. After further travel (Dresden, Copenhagen, Naples, Prague) he settled in Vienna in 1752 as Konzertmeister of the Prince of Saxe-Hildburghausen's orchestra, then as Kapellmeister. He also became involved in performances at the court theatre of French operas comiques, as arranger and composer, and he wrote Italian dramatic works for court entertainments. His friends tried, at first unsuccessfully, to procure a court post for him; but by 1759 he had a salaried position at the court theatre and soon after was granted a royal pension. He met the poet Calzabigi and the choreographer Angiolini, and with them wrote a ballet-pantomime Don Juan (1761) embodying a new degree of artistic unity. The next year they wrote the opera Orfeo ed Euridice, the first of Gluck's so-called 'reform operas'. In 1764 he composed an opera comique, La rencontre imprevue, and the next year two ballets; he followed up the artistic success of Orfeo with a further collaboration with Calzabigi, Alceste (1767), this time choreographed by Noverre; a third, Paride ed Elena (1770), was less well received.
