Opera in Western Europe arose at the close of the 16th century in Italy. The form underwent various changes and reforms and the name of Gluck is associated with a tendency to greater operatic realism, the drama subsumed in the music, his principles expounded in his introduction to his opera Alceste in 1767. Reform opera, exemplified in the later work of Gluck, represented a reaction against the stylised forms of later Baroque opera. Gluck achieved considerable success in Vienna, Paris, and elsewhere in Europe. Operas Ballet Music Gluck was associated with the choreographer and dancer Angiolini. Their first collaboration was on the subject of Don Juan, later used by Mozart in his Don Giovanni, based on the Spanish play by Tirso de Molina.

revolutionized the 18th-century idea of opera by paying more attention to the dramatic aspects of opera and less attention to the formal musical aspects. It was followed by (1767) and In 1774 his Armide (1777) and (1779), Gluck won a complete victory over Piccini. Born in Erasbach, Bavaria, the son of a forester, he left home in the face of his parents' opposition to music and entered Prague University in 1731. About 1735 in Vienna, Austria, he entered the service of Prince Melzi, with whom he went to Italy. He may have studied under Giovanni-Battista Sammartini in Milan, where he made his debut as an opera composer in 1741 with Artaserse (libretto by Pietro Metastasio). A number of operas followed, all in the conventional Italian form. He went to England, perhaps with Prince Lobkowitz, in 1745, possibly visiting Paris on the way. In London, he met George Frideric Handel, produced two operas, and appeared as a performer on the glass harmonica. In about 1747 he joined the Mingotti touring opera company, later becoming their Kapellmeister (director), and travelled widely.

Executive summary: Orfeo ed Eurydice La Caduta dei giganti ; it was followed by a revised version of one of his earlier operas. Gluck also appeared in London as a performer on the musical glasses. The success of his two operas, as well as that of a pasticcio (a collection of favorite arias set to a new libretto) entitled Piramo e Tisbe , was anything but brilliant, and he accordingly left London. But his stay in England was not without important consequences for his subsequent career. Gluck at this time was rather less than an ordinary producer of Italian opera. Handel 's well-known saying that Gluck "knew no more counterpoint than his cook" must be taken in connection with the less well-known fact that the cook in question was an excellent bass singer who performed in many of Handel's own operas. But it indicates the musical reason of Gluck's failure, while Gluck himself learned the dramatic reason through his surprise at finding that arias which in their original setting had been much applauded lost all effect when adapted to new words in the pasticcio pasticcio is as significant to us as it was to him, since it shows that already the effect of his music depended upon its characteristic treatment of dramatic situations. This characterizing power was as yet not directly evident, and it needed all the influence of the new instrumental resources of the rising sonata-forms before music could pass out of what we may call its architectural and decorative period and enter into dramatic regions at all.

It may seem strange in our urtext -minded age that Gluck’s most famous opera is still generally known in a hybrid version, the excuse being that the original Vienna edition (in Italian) is more succinctly dramatic, and so deserves to be followed in the main, but that some of the extra music added for Paris in 1774 (notably the “Dance of the Blessed Spirits” with its famous flute solo) is too good to lose. The hybrid had its origins in Berlioz, whose 1859 version became standard in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, but even those who today return to the Gluck original often pick and choose among versions. Another major difference is that the original had a castrato Orpheus and the

Christoph Willibald Gluck 1714-1787
First employed in the house of Prince Lobkowitz in Vienna, Gluck accompanied the court to Milan where he studied with Sammartini. A growing reputation as a composer of opera earned Gluck an invitation (1745) to London writing for the Haymarket Theatre. When Handel cynically advised Gluck that his works had not pleased the public, he traveled to Paris where he was very much influenced by the operas of Rameau . From 1755-61 Gluck was in Vienna where he began his important work of reforming opera seria along the more dramatic lines suggested in Marcello's Teatro alla moda (1720). Gluck's contribution to opera is in the development of an international style combining the best traits of Italian, French, and German schools.

Gluck eliminated the mere display of brilliant singing that previously had dominated opera. He tried to achieve a balance between the musical and the dramatic aspects of opera.
