composer and, along with John Cage and others, his work received some attention in the book "Experimental Music" by Michael Nyman . The relationship between the two composers goes deeper than this, because in some ways Glass was a leading light in the minimalist movement which was documented and named by Nyman before he himself became a practicing minimalist. Another curious coincidence (or is it?) is that the director Peter Greenaway created the documentary series "Four American Composers", one of whom was Philip Glass. Greenaway's film music is invariably scored by none other than Michael Nyman. Another example of film scoring for reduced instrumental forces (in this case a classical String Quartet) is his re-scoring of the original "Dracula" film starring Bela Lugosi. In this case, the restricted string timbre seems to perfectly complement the black and white images, and it's tempting to compare this decision with Bernard Herrmann 's string orchestra on Psycho. Much of the music for "Dracula" consists of repeated figures such as arpeggios which sometimes serve as accompaniment to a simple melodic line, though the music breaks into counterpoint for the Death of Dracula near the end of the movie. It is interesting to compare Glass's approach with that of

    GLASS, PHILIP BIOGRAPHY
    (b 1937 )
The American composer Philip Glass has enjoyed a degree of popularity unusual among contemporary composers. A pupil of Nadia Boulanger, he was influenced too by the Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar and has won a reputation as an exponent of minimalism, based on the systematic repetition of a motif, modified or extended. Stage Works Glass has won particular favour in some quarters for his stage works Einstein on the Beach, in collaboration with Bob Wilson, Satyagraha and Akhnaten. A more recent theatrical piece is Hydrogen Jukebox.

    Philip Glass (b. 1937)
    Introduction Koyaanasqatsi Kundun
A Philip Glass Biography, with an Eye on that Beckett Fellow why
After attending the Peabody Conservatory, Glass enrolled in the University of Chicago at the age of fifteen, where he taught himself the twelve-tone technique of composing through the vigorous study of archived scores. Graduating with a degree in mathematics and philosophy, he entered the prestigious Julliard School, where he studied a less-serially oriented modernism under Persichetti, Bergsma, and Milhaud. After graduating Julliard in 1962 he spent a few years working in Pittsburgh with the Contemporary Music Project, composing music for the public school system. But Glass needed a venue for his new musical ideas, and he found that in the world of experimental theater. Although Glass had been interested in avant-garde theater prior to his relocation in Paris, it was here that the seeds came to blossom, fertilized by such rich sources of Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet, and Bertold Brecht. Indeed, Glass attended the first production of Happy Days Play Einstein on the Beach , a work that revolutionized opera and placed Glass squarely on the musical map.

Born in Baltimore on January 31, 1937, Philip Glass discovered music in his father's radio repair shop where records also were sold. When certain ones sold poorly, he would take them home and play them for his three children, trying to discover why they didn't appeal to customers. These happened to be recordings of the great chamber works, and the future composer rapidly became familiar with Beethoven quartets, Schubert sonatas, Shostakovich symphonies, and other music then considered "offbeat." It was not until he was in his late teens that Glass began to encounter more "standard" classics. Glass began study of the violin at six and became serious about music when he took up the flute at eight. But by the time he was 15, he had become frustrated with the limited flute repertory as well as with musical life in post-war Baltimore. During his second year in high school, he applied for admission to the University of Chicago, passed, and with his parents' encouragement, moved to Chicago where he supported himself with part-time jobs waiting tables and loading airplanes at airports. He majored in mathematics and philosophy, and in off hours practiced piano and concentrated on such composers as Ives and Webern.
At 19, Glass graduated from the University of Chicago and, determined to become a composer, moved to New York and the Julliard School. By then he had abandoned the 12-tone techniques he had been using in Chicago, and preferred the works of American composers like Aaron Copland and William Schuman.
