Jump to: navigation search Philip Glass in December 2007 Philip Glass (born January 31 ) is a three-time Academy Award -nominated American composer . He is considered one of the most influential composers of the late- 20th century and is widely acknowledged as a composer who has brought art music to the public (apart from precursors such as Richard Strauss Kurt Weill and Leonard Bernstein ), in creating an accessibility not previously recognized by the broader market. Glass' music is frequently described as minimalist , though he has distanced himself from that description, calling himself, among other things, a composer of "music with repetitive structures." Although his earliest music could arguably be called minimalist, his later style has evolved significantly enough that the label is probably inappropriate for many of his works. Glass is a prolific composer: he has written ensemble works, operas, symphonies, concertos, film scores, and solo works. Glass counts many visual artists, writers, musicians, and directors among his friends, including Richard Serra Chuck Close Doris Lessing Allen Ginsberg ... John Moran , actor Bill Treacher Godfrey Reggio Ravi Shankar Linda Ronstadt ... David Bowie , the conductor Dennis Russell Davies , and electronic musician Aphex Twin , who have all collaborated with him.

In that capacity, he has written several operas, ballets, concerti, and symphonies, and has been nominated for an Academy Award for his film scores on three occasions. His initial public recognition came in 1976 when he debuted the first of his portrait trilogy, Einstein on the Beach . He has since worked with a myriad of talented artists including David Bowie , using the rock star's music as a backdrop for two symphonies, has collaborated with world-renowned sitarist Ravi Shankar ( Norah Jones 's father) on several innovative projects, and employed Linda Ronstadt as vocalist for his chamber opera 1000 Airplanes on the Roof and the Songs from Liquid Days cycle. Philip Glass
20th Century Composers Philip Glass was born in Baltimore on January 31, 1937. Philip Glass' father had a radio repair shop and that is where Philip Glass discovered music. Ben Glass was Philip Glass' father. Philip Glass played the violin at six years old and the flute at eight years old. When Philip Glass was ten years old he began performing. By the time Glass was 15 years old, he had become frustrated with the limited flute repertoire as well as with musical life in post-war Baltimore. As an adult, he mastered the piano and began composing using his own distinct style. When he performs on the piano he has a special talent at creating an unplanned relationship between performer and public. Philip Glass graduated from the University of Chicago, at 19 years old. He was determined to become a composer and moved to New York. He is most famous for his piano playing along with his ability to compose. His favorite was composing for the theatre. Philip Glass worked as a plumber, drove a cab at night, and spent his spare time assembling his beginning version of the Philip Glass Ensemble.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I click and click and click, but nothing is happening.
A: Click down on a bar and drag it back and forth, holding your mouse button down. Q: Where is all the new music?
A: The folks at Looking Glass Studios are doing their best to update the music in the glass engine. Q: All the other bars slide when I am just trying to slide one bar.
A: That's because all the bars contain the same things (works or tracks from works); they are just sorted in different ways (by title, by date, by length, etc.). When you slide to a work on one bar, all the other bars will slide to show you the position and value of the same work on the other bars. Q: What are those little vertical stripes on each sliding bar?

Introduction (born Baltimore, 31 January 1937). He studied at the Juilliard School and with Boulanger in Paris (1964-6) and worked with the Indian musicians Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha. His minimalist works of 1965-8 (e.g. Two Pages ) are 'experimental and exploratory' but later ones, for his own amplified ensemble, are more complicated (e.g. Music in Fifths ). Since 1975 his works have nearly all been for the theatre. When Einstein on the Beach was given at the Met (1976) he became famous; further full-scale operas, Satyagraha Akhnaten The Making of the Representative for Planet 8 (1988) and The Voyage (1992), chamber operas and music theatre works followed. One of the most popular serious composers in the USA, he has also performed in rock and jazz. Extracted with permission from

About This Page
This is a general, introductory page about the music of Philip Glass. It covers his musical journey (as I have read about it), his musical style, some comments on where to start a collection and links to other pages. It is not a fan page - it is intended to be a page about music. I started this page when there were few web pages around about Philip Glass' music, but now there are many, including several far more detailed sites. These are listed below under the links section, and those looking for more detail should consult them, including Glass' own recently-launched official site. Newcomers to this composer, and those who can't be bothered navigating a large site, may find this page interesting. It started out for no particular reason, and took on a life of its own. Although it is updated only infrequently, I have left it here as it seems to be useful to some people and gets a lot of hits. Welcome in particular to visitors from the newsgroup Rec.Music.Makers.Piano
