Alberto Ginastera occupied a leading position in the musical world of Argentina, where he exercised a strong influence over a younger generation of composers. He founded the centre for Advanced Musical Studies in Buenos Aires and became its director in 1963. He later spent much time in Europe, settling in Geneva. His style of writing developed from naive nationalistic influences to a mature grasp of serialist techniques proposed by Schoenberg Alberto Ginastera Works The ballet Estancia is evocatively Argentinian with its echoes of gaucho life. The opera Don Rodrigo, based on a twelve-note series, makes original use of special effects, while the operas Bomarzo and Beatrix Cenci draw also on Renaissance forms, set, as they are, in Renaissance Italy. Ginastera's orchestral music includes a concerto for harp, two concertos for piano and concertos for violin and for cello. MIDI FILE - from Piano Sonata No.2: 1th Mov. Ollantay, three symphonic movements, Pampeana n.3, a symphonic pastoral, and Overture to a Criollo Faust, have strongly Latin American elements. His chamber music includes the first two Pampeanas, for violin and piano and for cello and piano respectively, in addition to string quartets, the third with a soprano and texts by Lorca, Alberti and Jiménez.

Ginastera's most notable works include the highly dramatic and violent operas Don Rodrigo (1964), Bomarzo (1967), and Beatrix Cenci (1971). These operas reflect the influence of motion-picture techniques such as flashbacks and quickly alternating scenes, as well as the expressionism of Alban Berg's operas. Until the mid-1940's, Ginastera based his works on Argentine folk music, as in his ballet Estancia (1941). His nontheatrical works include a piano sonata (1952), Variaciones Concertantes for orchestra (1953), String Quartet No. 2 (1958), and Violin Concerto (1963). Ginastera was born in Buenos Aires.

Brain Salad Surgery under the title "Toccata." They recorded the piece not only with Ginastera's permission, but with his endorsement. In 1973, when they were recording the album, Keith Emerson met with Ginastera at his home in Switzerland and played a recording of his arrangement for him. Ginastera is reported to have said, "Diabolical!" Emerson misunderstood Ginastera's meaning: Ginastera spoke no English and meant that their interpretation was frightening, which had been his intent when he wrote it; Emerson, being British, took it to mean "awful". Emerson was so upset that he was prepared to scrap the piece until Ginastera's wife intervened saying that he approved. Ginastera later said, "You have captured the essence of my music, and no one's ever done that before." Emerson would later go on to release an adaptation of Ginastera's Suite de Danzas Criollas entitled "Creole Dance". "Toccata" also gained fame as the theme to the New England cult TV show

Ginastera himself divided his compositions into three stylistic periods: objective nationalism subjective nationalism and Neo-expressionism . His most frequently performed works, including the Three Argentinian Dances , Op.2, the ballet Estancia and the Malambo subjective nationalism - although, for example, he still saw the role of the melody as very significant. Rhythmic contrasts, emotionally charged atmospheres, and strong oppositions between mounting and subsiding tension were still present, if less overtly, as symbols identifying his language (in works such as Pampeana No.3 for orchestra and Piano Sonata No.1, Op.22). Both the First Piano Concerto (Op.28, premiered in Washington in April 1962), and the Second Piano Concerto (Op. 39) belong to the third period: Neo-expressionism . In fact, this period began with the Second String Quartet, Op.26, of 1958 and continued with some of his most important works, such as the
