Gesualdo was part of an aristocratic family which acquired the principality of Venosa in 1560. His uncle was Carlo Borromeo , later Saint Charles Borromeo . In addition, Gesualdo's mother, Girolama, was the niece of Pope Pius IV Most likely he was born at Venosa, but little else is known about his early life; even his birthdate — 1560 or 1561, or 1566 — is a matter of some dispute, though a recently discovered letter from his mother indicates he was probably born in 1566. Gesualdo had a musical relationship with Pomponio Nenna , though whether it was student to teacher, or colleague to colleague, is uncertain. At any rate, he had a single-minded devotion to music from an early age, and showed little interest in anything else. In addition to the lute, he also played the

    GESUALDO, CARLO BIOGRAPHY
Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, murderer in 1590 of his guilty wife and her lover, later took a wife from the d'Este family, rulers of Ferrara, whose musical interests coincided with his own. He wrote a quantity of sacred and secular vocal music and a relatively small number of instrumental pieces. In style his music is unexpected in its sudden changes of tonality, its harmony and its intensity of feeling, qualities that have found particular favour among some modern theorists. Secular Vocal Music Gesualdo, a nobleman of melancholy reserve, published six books of madrigals, the second of them originally under an improbable pseudonym. These include some remarkable and striking compositions, such as the five-voice Moro, lasso, al mio duolo, and the earlier Ahi, disperata vita. Sacred Vocal Music Gesualdo's numerous sacred compositions include works intended for the liturgy of Good Friday and Holy Saturday, as well as Marian compositions such as Ave, dulcissima Maria and Ave, regina caelorum. Volumes of sacred music in a Sacrarum cantionum liber primus (First Book of Sacred Songs) of works in five parts and another of works in six and seven parts were published in Naples in 1603.

A Look Into a Brilliant Yet Troubled Mind
Read on and learn about one of music history's brilliant yet troubled mind. Life
There is some discrepancy on the year when Carlo Gesualdo was exactly born. Some scholars say it was in 1560 or 1561. Others claim it was 1564. The general consensus however is that Gesualdo was born on March 8,1566 in Naples, Italy. He was the second son of Fabrizio II Gesualdo and Girolama Borromeo, feudal landowners who owned several palaces. Thus, Carlos Gesualdo's full title was Duke Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa. Childhood
Gesualdo's interest in music started at a very young age. He played the lute and the harpsichord and he also sang. Being the second son, his passion for music was supported by his family. But in 1584 his older brother, Luigi, died and the burden of producing the family heir fell on his shoulders.

Music Webmaster Len Mullenger Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, Count of Conza - 1613): This great if disequilibrated composer ( Stravinsky Entries for Gesualdo in most musical dictionaries are brief. He was acknowledged as a leading composer of madrigals (six volumes) in which he extended the style to extremes with the maximum of expressive intensity anticipating the music of a couple of centuries later. His music exhibited sudden changes of tempo with every emotion being wrung out to maximum effect and the texts were often highly erotic. These madrigals were considered to be so remarkable that they were published shortly after his death as one of the earliest examples of a printed full score. Stravinsky was fascinated by his music and orchestrated and completed some of his works although he stated that (racers running with lighted torches passed from hand to hand books written like this are not easy to read! It may be fairly assumed by those who know me that I am not au fait forse per aver troppo reiterare conquella I congiugiamenti carnali ]) and it was only to be expected that within a short space of time she would find a new love-interest in the form of young Don Fabrizio Carafa, Duke of Andria, himself married and father to four children.

He was one of the greatest composers of madrigals, songs with parts for several voices (see Madrigal ). His settings of poems by the Italian Renaissance poets Ludovico Ariosto and Torquato Tasso express the inflections of the spoken verse with exquisite refinement. Gesualdo wrote six books of madrigals (1594-1596, 1611) that were far ahead of their time in harmonic complexity. He also composed religious choral works called motets and other religious songs. DON CARLO GESUALDO Dr David C F Wright Here is one of the most colourful characters in the history of music. Don Carlo was a murderer! Does that affect our listening to his music? Should it affect our appreciation of it? Gesualdo was a prince. He was a royal. As we know, laws of some lands do not extend to the royals and if they break such laws they are not subject to arrest and prosecution. But Gesualdo's music deserves attention and it may be that the royals of his day exaggerated its worth to cover up his despicable deeds. Gesualdo had a notable history of importance going back to the 11th century. His family had acquired a list of prodigious titles through judicious marriages and consequent with that had acquired property on a massive scale. Carlo's grandfather, Luigi Gesualdo had been ennobled as the first prince of Venosa by King Philip of Spain on the occasion of the marriage of his eldest son, Fabrizio (Carlo's father) to Girolama Borromeo, a niece of Pope Pius IV. Carlo was the second born of four children, two boys and two girls. The date of his birth is still not certain. It was somewhere between 1560 and 1562. His cultured father always had musicians in the house and actually maintained a small band. Carlo's first teacher was probably Pompino Nenna (c 1555- 1617) who was to include two of Gesualdo's madrigals in the eighth volume of his works published posthumously in 1618. Giovanni Masque was another possible teacher being in the service of Fabrizio before Nenna. Another notable musician in Fabrizio's entourage was Scipione Stella, also known as Scipione Dentice, who composed five books of madrigals and, of an older generation, Giovanni dell'Arpa. In such company at Gesualdo's castle young Carlo was musically enriched.
