Average: (8 votes) In a career tragically cut short in mid-stride by a brain tumor, George Gershwin (1898-1937) proved himself to be not only one of the great songwriters of his extremely rich era, but also a gifted "serious" composer who bridged the worlds of classical and popular music. The latter is all the more striking, given that, of...

On September 2 George Gershwin signed his name to the completed orchestral score of the opera, Porgy and Bess . The composer called the seven- hundred-page score his masterpiece and never ceased to marvel that he had created it. Many critics consider Porgy and Bess to be the first and finest American opera.

In February 1934, George and Ira Gershwin and Dubose and Dorothy Heyward began their collaboration on a libretto, songs, and music for Heyward's novel, Porgy , about the African-American "Gullah" culture of South Carolina. During the summer of 1934, George Gershwin spent several weeks on Folly Island off the coast of Charleston, where the Heywards owned a beach cottage. There, he and Heyward observed customs of the local people and listened to their music. Gershwin joined in their "shouting" which involved rhythms created by hands and feet as accompaniment to the spirituals.

George Gershwin
Composer
Born to immigrant parents of Russian-Jewish descent, George Gershwin assimilated contemporary tastes and national traditions to create both popular music and symphonic works that captured the American imagination. "True music," he once wrote, "must repeat the thoughts and aspirations of the people and the time. My people are American. My time is today." Between 1924 and 1935, Gershwin collaborated with his lyricist brother Ira on more than a dozen musicals, producing such memorable songs as "Fascinating Rhythm," "Embraceable You," and "I Got Rhythm." He also received critical acclaim with his concert pieces among them Rhapsody in Blue Concerto in F (1925), and An American in Paris (1928) which transformed jazz into a serious art form. Many view his opera Porgy and Bess (1935) as the culmination of his singular genius. German-born artist Arthur Kaufmann, discharged from his professorship at the Dusseldorf School of Applied Arts in 1933 for being a "non-Aryan," moved to the United States in 1936 the same year he painted his friend Gershwin. As he wrote in his letter of condolence to Ira, "I personally owe much to him, for it was through George's affidavit that I was able to enter this country."

George Gershwin Biography
George Gershwin was a very different kind of composer. The music of George Gershwin contains a mixture of classical and jazz. It is very hard to compare what composer George Gershwin is similar to. To give you an idea of what his music style sounds like, watch the cartoon "Tom and Jerry". Apart from being a good quality cartoon in general, the music score of this cartoon is phenomenal, and sounds very much like the style of George Gershwin. The music uses only orchestral instruments, has many classical moments, and jazzes it up with some 7/4 time, the common time for jazz. There are some "call and respond" moments, when a trumpet may be the caller, and a trombone may be the responder. This is also typical of jazz, and George Gershwin implemented this into some of his greatest works. George Gershwin composed operas, symphonies, musicals, and 3 preludes for the piano. His most famous symphony work is called Rhapsody in Blue. This symphonic piece composed by George Gershwin, consists of classical style and jazz style. Rhapsody in Blue is a wonderful composition, and if you are an open minded listener to music, Rhapsody in Blue probably will get you hooked. George Gershwin's most famous opera is called Porgy and Bess. This opera is very musical, and can beat any Mozart opera ever written. Porgy and Bess also sounds very jazzy, typical of the writing style of George Gershwin

Yet, in that short time, he wrote hundreds of unforgettable popular songs. He wrote some concert works, such as "Rhapsody in Blue," that are still performed today. And he wrote what many consider to be the most beautiful American opera, "Porgy and Bess. "

George Gershwin
Early in life, George Gershwin (1898-1937) frequented the Yiddish theaters on Second Avenue in New York's Lower East Side and was much taken with the music of Joseph Rumshisky. In 1915, Boris Thomashevsky, reigning star of the Yiddish Theater, invited Gershwin and Sholem Secunda to collaborate on a Yiddish operetta. Gershwin was willing, but Secunda refused to join with a young, musically untrained, publishing-house pianist. Later in life, when he was already a successful writer of popular songs, Gershwin signed a contract with the Metropolitan Opera to write an opera based on Ansky's Dybbuk and was ready to go to Europe to study Jewish music, but having learned that the rights to the play had already been given to Ludovico Rocca, he withdrew Gershwin's idiom was the American scene and its music. Beginning with jazz and popular songs, he broadened his talents thematically and musically, until they culminated in his greatest work, the opera Porgy and Bess (1935).

Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 26, 1898. He studied with the American composers Rubin Goldmark, Henry Cowell, and Wallingford Riegger and with the Russian-born composer and theorist Joseph Schillinger. At the age of 16 Gershwin became a pianist and song promoter for a music publishing firm, but the success of his song “Swanee” (1918) established him as a Tin Pan Alley composer. The lyrics for nearly all his songs were written by his brother Ira Gershwin, his collaborator in a series of revues and musical comedies that included George White's Scandals Lady Be Good Funny Face (1927); and the political satire

George Gershwin's Rhapsody of Life
Books Review of: George Gershwin: His Life and Work By BENJAMIN IVRY
December 13, 2006 A D V E R T I S E M E N T A D V E R T I S E M E N T "Fascinating Rhythm" is more than just the title of a hit song by George Gershwin. It encapsulates the gracefully entrancing, endearingly catchy quality of his songs written for stage and screen like "Lady be Good," "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," "Nice Work If You Can Get It," and "‘S Wonderful," each deservedly a permanent part of American culture. During his brief lifetime — he died of a brain tumor aged 38 — Gershwin, who also wrote "Rhapsody in Blue," "An American in Paris,"and "Porgy and Bess,"was a physical dynamo, addicted to every imaginable indoor and outdoor sport; his dancing skills were honed to the point where he could suggest dance steps to Fred Astaire. One girlfriend recalled that Gershwin would typically "tap-dance, sometimes with cane in hand, while waiting for elevators." This kind of daemonic energy is detailed in "George Gershwin: His Life and Work" (University of California Press, 884 pages, $39.95) by Howard Pollack, a musicologist and professor at the University of Houston, author of the well-received "Aaron Copland: the Life and Work of an Uncommon Man" (1999). Possibly Mr. Pollack's most important book to date is "Harvard Composers: Walter Piston and His Students, from Elliott Carter to Frederic Rzewski" (1992), celebrating undersung composers of value. As a subject for biography, Gershwin poses the opposite challenge: How to appreciate a musician who is universally cherished?

The Gershwin Legacy
Library Celebrates Contributions of George and Ira
By RAYMOND A. WHITE On Sept. 26, 1898, one of America's most important composers was born. George Gershwin of Brooklyn, N.Y., alone and with his brother, Ira, wrote many of the finest American popular songs and orchestral pieces. The premiere institution for Gershwin studies is the Library of Congress Music Division, which this year celebrates the Gershwin legacy. In March, the Gershwin room opened in the Library's Jefferson Building, where it serves as a permanent exhibition area for materials relating to the brothers. The following was written by the curator of the George and Ira Gershwin Collection. The music of George and Ira Gershwin has long been a part of the American consciousness. The opening clarinet glissando from Rhapsody in Blue, the taxi horn theme from An American in Paris and the songs "I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable You," "The Man I Love," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Fascinating Rhythm," and so many others are instantly recognizable. Even the mention of the name "Gershwin" brings to mind the glamour and sophistication of the 1920s and 1930s, personified by the brothers who helped to give a musical voice to the time.
