G eorge Gershwin was born in Brooklyn in 1898, the second of four children from a close-knit immigrant family. He began his musical career as a song-plugger on Tin Pan Alley , but was soon writing his own pieces. Gershwin's first published song, "When You Want ‘Em, You Can't Get ‘Em," demonstrated innovative new techniques, but only earned him five dollars. Soon after, however, he met a young lyricist named Irving Ceaser. Together they composed a number of songs including "Swanee," which sold more than a million copies. In the same year as "Swanee," Gershwin collaborated with Arthur L. Jackson and Buddy De Sylva on his first complete Broadway musical, "La, La Lucille". Over the course of the next four years, Gershwin wrote forty-five songs; among them were "Somebody Loves Me" and "Stairway to Paradise," as well as a twenty-five-minute opera, "Blue Monday." Composed in five days, the piece contained many musical clichés, but it also offered hints of developments to come. In 1924, George collaborated with his brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin, on a musical comedy "Lady Be Good". It included such standards as "Fascinating Rhythm" and "The Man I Love." It was the beginning of a partnership that would continue for the rest of the composer's life. Together they wrote many more successful musicals including "Oh Kay!" and "Funny Face", staring Fred Astaire and his sister Adele. While continuing to compose popular music for the stage, Gershwin began to lead a double life, trying to make his mark as a serious composer.

Introduction (born Brooklyn, 26 September 1898; died Hollywood, 11 July 1937). Essentially self-taught, he was first a song plugger in Tin Pan Alley and an accompanist. In his teens he began to compose popular songs and produced a succession of musicals from 1919 to 1933 ( Lady, be Good! Oh, Kay! Strike up the Band Funny Face Girl Crazy , 1930); the lyrics were generally by his brother Ira (1896 1983). In 1924 he became famous: he wrote Rhapsody in Blue as a concerto for piano and Paul Whiteman's jazz band. Its success led him to devote increasing energy to 'serious' composition. His more ambitious works include the Piano Concerto in F (1925) and the tone poem An American in Paris (1928). But he contiuned composing for the musical theatre, and some of his most successful musicals ( Strike up the Band Girl Crazy Of Thee I Sing ) date from this period. In 1934-5 he wrote his 'American folk opera' Porgy and Bess , which draws on African-American idioms; given on Broadway, it was only a limited success. Gershwin went to Hollywood in 1936 and wrote songs for films. He was a sensitive songwriter of great melodic gifts and did much to create syntheses between jazz and classical traditions in his concert music and black folk music and opera in

George Gershwin was born Jacob Gershowitz in 1898 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of immigrant parents. His compositions are still used today as tool of teachers everywhere as examples of the American entrance to the serious musical world of Stravinsky Debussy Bartok , etc. Gershwin's first experiences came as a piano was rolled into the house for Ira, the brother.
But it was George who took the immediate interest in the piano and immediately began to successfully play by ear. MIDI FILE - Rialto Ripples Rag His parents invested some piano lessons in him and George began to play for a profession in his late teens. Gershwin spent the first years of his professional life as a piano player in "Tin Pan Alley," a place where musical songs were pitched to music executives in hopes of selling the rights to them for a modest amount of cash. These songs were later to be introduced to the American public as those sung on the silver screen and on the Vaudeville stage. Gershwin wrote his first largely successful musical piece for the Paul Whiteman Orchestra: the composition was Rhapsody in Blue.

Since I Found You and Ragging the Traumerei . These were rough in style but demonstrated a merge between the two forms. Gershwin greatly admired the songs of Irving Berlin, and among his earliest musical heroes were Franz Liszt and the great pianists who were then appearing in New York, such as Josef Lhevinne, Josef Hoffmann, and composer-pianist Ferrucio Busoni.
In July 1917, Gershwin began working as the rehearsal pianist for a Broadway show by Jerome Kern and Victor Herbert: Miss 1917 . After the show opened in November at the Century Theater, Gershwin stayed on as the organizer of and accompanist for a series of popular concerts held there on Sunday evenings. His talent as a composer began to be noticed by influential people. Although he had previously published little, in early 1918 Max Dreyfus, the head of Harms Publishing Company, offered him a weekly salary for the rights to any songs he might compose in the future. Before the year was out, three Broadway shows carried songs by Gershwin. Soon afterwards, in collaboration with Arthur L. Jackson and Buddy De Sylva, Gershwin composed his first full Broadway score: La La Lucille , which opened on Broadway in May 1919. Before he had reached his 21st birthday, Gershwin was known, not only as an outstanding pianist, but he could also claim the composition of a Broadway show to his credit, several songs in print, and a steady income from a well-known publisher for his future works.

He was born on September 26, 1898, in Brooklyn, New York. When the Gershwins bought a piano for Ira, George monopolized it. He took piano lessons and was introduced to classical music. Gershwin wrote his first song in 1913. At the age of 15, he quit school to become a song plugger. In 1919, he completed his first score for the Broadway musical La, La Lucille . During the same year, he teamed up with Irving Caesar to write Swanee . Al Jolson heard Gershwin play Swanee at a party and put it into his Broadway show. It became an overnight hit and rocketed Gershwin to a new status in the musical world.

His parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants, and he grew up on the lower east side of Manhattan. As a boy, he taught himself to play hit tunes on a neighbor's piano; when he was thirteen, he began studying with a teacher who recognized his talent and introduced him to piano works ranging from Bach to Liszt to Debussy. "At fifteen. he left school to become a pianist demonstrating new songs in the salesrooms of a music publisher; three years later, he started his won career as a songwriter, and in 1919 (at the age of twenty) he wrote La, La, Lucille , his first complete Broadway musical. The next year, his song Swanee was a tremendous hit; during the 1920s and 1930s he wrote one brilliant musical after another-including Lady, Be Good

Classic FM-The Magazine "Who'd have guessed that a scholarly, in-depth biography of a long-dead, faintly enigmatic musician would be such a gripping read? Howard Pollack hits every note of Gershwin's brief existence with facts, anecdotes and speculations, seeking inspirational sources for his early work. The result is a meticulous, frank look at a gifted celebrity of the 1920s and '30s, and the ways in which developing technology, from printed sheet music to Pianolas to radio, affected Gershwin's life and music. The level of detail is breathtaking. . . . Pollack's writing style resembles Gershwin's music. It's tightly wrought, witty and gets straight to the point." George Gershwin
It Begins With A Love Story
Morris Gershovitz, George Gershwin's father, moved from Russia to New York, U.S.A. in 1890.
As soon as he arrived he began searching for Rose Bruskin, the girl he loved. Rose was already somewhere in New York City.
First Morris had to find a tailor named Greenstein.
You see...Greenstein was Morris' uncle and he knew where Rose was. Morris not only found Rose, but he married her in 1895. Morris, Rose and Uncle Greenstein had left their country to escape the pogroms (murdereous raids) that threatened them every day. Many other Russian Jews had also emigrated for the same reason. Morris and Rose Gershovitz were poor, but they were happy. They had four children: Ira (1896), George (1898), Arthur (1900) and a daughter, Frances (1906). To seem more American, they changed their Russian last name from Gershovitz to Gershwin.
