EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION Although Sapir was born in Lauenberg, Pomerania (Prussia), in what is now Lebork, Poland, his parents, Jacob David and Eva Seagal Sapir, were Lithuanian Jews. Sapir undoubtedly learned German as a child, but the language of his home was Yiddish; he read Hebrew with his father, a cantor, beginning when he was seven or eight. Jacob Sapir preferred music to theology, however, and the family's daily life was not intensely orthodox in religious observance. The family moved several times during Sapir's early childhood. He began kindergarten in Liverpool, England, while Jacob preceded his wife and children to America, obtaining a position in Richmond, Virginia, in 1890. Shortly after the move to the United States Sapir's younger brother Max died of typhoid, and Jacob's career declined through a series of short-lived appointments. The family took root on the Lower East Side of New York City when Edward was ten. Eva Sapir ran a small notions shop to support herself and her remaining son; she and Jacob divorced sometime after 1910. When Sapir was fourteen he won a Pulitzer scholarship for four years at the prestigious Horace Mann High School. He declined it in favor of a local high school and used the scholarship for his undergraduate education at Columbia University. He was one of the bright stars among the immigrant children of the city, and higher education was his prize.

REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL German, Sir Edward German, Sir Edward (1862-1936), was a British composer who is best remembered for his tuneful patriotic operettas Merrie England (1902) and Tom Jones (1907). German's best music is light in mood and is gracefully and skillfully constructed. His experience as a violinist and as a conductor is reflected in his writing for orchestra and in his gift for beautiful vocal melody. He composed much music for the theater, especially incidental music for plays by William Shakespeare. German also composed two symphonies (1887, 1893) and other orchestral works as well as chamber music, works for piano and organ, and vocal compositions. His most popular orchestral work is probably the Welsh Rhapsody (1904), based on traditional Welsh melodies.

Santa Ana winds and firestorms once more wrestled to the ground our cherished illusions of our idyllic life in Southern California. No doubt, some day, this recurring calamity will become the subject for a great work of art. To my knowledge, it hasn't happened yet.
Meanwhile, in the middle of a busy season of gallery openings, two exhibitions grabbed my attention; one by British painter Tony Bevan, at the L.A. Louver Gallery , another by German painter Anton Henning, at the Christopher Grimes . Both artists have a good track record of exhibiting here in L.A. -– it's the sixth show for Bevan and the third for Henning. There are two recurring images in Tony Bevan's art: a gigantic head or face, tilted at an impossible angle and painted in an intentionally crude, almost cartoon-ish manner; the other is an image of an imposing architectural construction, threatened by invisible forces. The palpable danger, captured in many of his compositions, is enhanced by the unusual, unsettling use of color leading to either very dramatic, or, when he wants it, a very lyrical effect.

    Biography
Professor Edward Timms, OBE, FBA, Research Professor in History, was the Director of the Centre from its inception until the appointment of his successor Dr Raphael Gross in 2003. The range of his interests was signalled by his inaugural lecture, 'The Wandering Jew: A Leitmotif in German Literature and Politics' (University of Sussex, 1994). With a group of enthusiastic colleagues he launched the Centre's programme of teaching and research, which has been developed in partnership with its London-based Support Group, attracting financial support from both individual and institutional donors.
Professor Timms, who is best known for his research on the Jewish contribution to twentieth-century Austrian culture, developed an innovative research methodology which involves the mapping of circles of intellectual creativity in diagrammatic form. He has published many books and articles on Austrian Jewish cultural history, and in 2002 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for History of the Social Sciences. He is best known for his book Karl Kraus - Apocalyptic Satirist , published by Yale University Press in two volumes as Culture and Catastrophe in Habsburg Vienna (1986) and The Post-War Crisis and the Rise of the Swastika (2005). His scholarly work and his achievements as director of the Centre were further recognized in 2005 when he was made an officer of the Order of the British Empire.
