by Philip Scowcroft
"Let them (the British musical public) have muck. It’s all they care for". "Muck", is according to the speaker, light music; the speaker is Edward German (1862-1936), born Edward German Jones in Whitchurch, the son of an organist and choirmaster. "Muck" or not, German produced a number of light music masterpieces and when Elgar said to him that he admired his music, we can be reasonably certain that it was to the light side of his output that Elgar was alluding. German of course had plenty of serious music credentials, with study At the Royal Academy of Music (his composition teacher there was Ebenezer Prout). He was, soon after, composing major pieces, a Te Deum (1887) and a Symphony in E Minor (1887, premiered 1890), soon followed by a Second, in A Minor, subtitled

Feb. 27, 1955 (Flintridge, CA) This vaudeville legend began her career as an operetta soubrette (using her mother's maiden name), appearing in the chorus of The Pearl of Pekin (1889). She soon worked her way into featured roles in the Broadway and London productions of The Belle of Bohemia (1900-01). Using her increasing girth to her advantage, Friganza became one of the most popular "road" stars, confirming her success in New York when she triumphed as the Widow Crocker in Broadway's The Prince of Pilsen (1904). Edward VII was brought up strictly under a very rigorous educational regime by his parents, who had unrealistic expectations of his abilities.
During his mother's reign, he undertook public duties (including working on Royal Commissions in the field of social issues), but he was excluded by his mother from acting as her deputy until 1898.
Edward was 59 when he became king, having been heir apparent for longer than anyone else in British history. Criticised for his social life, Edward's main interests lay in foreign affairs, and military and naval matters.
Fluent in French and German, Edward made a number of visits abroad (in 1904, he visited France - a visit which helped to create the atmosphere which made the subsequent Anglo-French entente cordiale possible); he was related to nearly every Continental sovereign and came to be known as the 'Uncle of Europe'.
Edward also played an active role in encouraging military and naval reforms, pressing for the reform of the Army Medical Service and the modernisation of the Home Fleet.

KING EDWARD VII OF GREAT BRITAIN: EVIL DEMIURGE OF THE TRIPLE ENTENTE AND WORLD WAR I by Webster Tarpley "For long years, King Edward wove, with masterly skill, the Nessus robe that was to destroy the German Hercules." - Leipziger Neuste Nachrichten, after the death of Edward VII, May 1910 "What neither Azincourt nor Poitiers could do, the genius of Edward VII realized." - Emile Flourens, La France Conquise, 1906 "There are no frictions between us, there is only rivalry." - Edward VII to State Secretary von Tschirschky of the German Foreign Ministry, at the Cronberg Anglo-German summit, 1906 The Triple Entente is the name given to the alliance among Great Britain, France, and Russia which was formed during the first decade of this century, and which led to the outbreak of the First World War. This Triple Entente was the personal creation of King Edward VII of Britain. The Triple Entente was King Edward's own idea. Edward VII was also Casanova with a crown, a satyr and sodomist on the throne of England, the royal rake of Edwardian legend. All of this provides useful insight, but is finally beside the point. Edward VII, far more than any other single human being, was the author of the First World War, and thus brought about what is probably the most destructive single event in the history of western civilization. Without Edward's exertions, the war could never have occurred. The Lord of the Isles, as he appeared in Scottish costume at a ball in 1871, was the Lord of the Flies.
