German was born German Edward Jones in Whitchurch, Shropshire , the second of five children. The son of a church organist, he began to study piano and organ with his father at the age of five. At the age of six, he formed a boys' concert band to perform locally, teaching himself the violin, composition, and music arrangement in the process. He later sang alto in the church choir. In his mid-teens, his parents attempted to apprentice him to a shipbuilding firm, as they believed their son had an aptitude for engineering. His studies had been delayed by a serious illness, however, and so he was eventually turned away for being too old to begin an apprenticeship. In his teens he formed a second band, a quintette, including himself on the violin, his sister on the pianoforte or the bass and three friends of the family, for which German prepared the orchestrations. He also did some amateur acting.

    Romance
Born German Edward Jones in Whitchurch, Shropshire, German spent seven years at the Royal Academy of Music, studying harmony and counterpoint with Prout and winning organ and violin as well as composition prizes. Although eventually overshadowed by that of his friend Elgar, German’s music enjoyed great success in the later Victorian and Edwardian periods, ranging from symphonies, suites and concert overtures to ballads and salon pieces. He was also seen as the natural successor to Sullivan, completing the latter’s last opera The Emerald Isle and composing his own masterpiece Merrie England for the Savoy Theatre in 1902. The Romance dates from German’s early years as a professional composer, and was originally one of a pair (of which the other is now lost). The first known performance was by Oscar Street (1869-1923), a pupil of George Clinton, at the Oxford University Musical Union on January 29, 1890. © Oliver Davies.

          • I seem petrified by the modern trend of Art. If you heard some of the ultra-modern works you would understand what I mean. There is a fashion at present, and that fashion is to pretend you enjoy what is incomprehensible. Of course, I ought to be strong enough to disregard it believing as I do that beauty, shapeliness and sanity will prevail in the end. What I begin to feel thankful for is that I have been able to work for thirty years in a more congenial atmosphere. I do not advocate stringent laws in regard to composition. From a master hand everything must naturally be shapely, however modern and advanced it may be, but into students, while they are students, I think it would be wiser to instil a little more of the ethics of form.

THE D'O YLY C ARTE O PERA C OMPANY Edward German Edward German (cond., 1902) [Born Whitchurch, Shropshire 17 Feb 1862, died London 11 Nov 1936] Edward German, full name Edward German Jones, studied the organ and violin at the Royal Academy of Music. He won the Charles Lucas Medal for composition in 1885, and in 1889 was appointed conductor of the Globe Theatre orchestra, where he provided incidental music for Richard Mansfield's production of Richard III He went on to compose dance and incidental music for Henry Irving's production of King Henry VIII as the Lyceum in 1892, as well as numerous other orchestral compositions for the stage and music festivals. While he had offered to compose an opera for Richard D'Oyly Carte in the early 1890s, the offer came to nothing, and German had virtually no experience in opera or choral music when he was asked by Carte to complete the score for The Emerald Isle following Arthur Sullivan's death in November 1900. The opera had a modest run at the Savoy (205 perfomances from April to November 1901), but the music was critically acclaimed, and German was engaged to compose a work on his own. The opera with book by Basil Hood

    Edward German (1862-1936)
Edward German (originally Edward German Jones) was born in Whitchurch, Shropshire, in 1862, where, in his teens, he organised a local band and taught himself the violin. In 1880 he went to the Royal Academy to study the organ and the violin. After leaving the Academy in 1878 he was briefly an orchestral violinist before being employed as musical director at the Globe Theatre. He composed highly popular incidental music for plays, including "Richard III" (1889), "Henry VIII" (1892), "Nell Gwynn" (1900), and others. He also wrote symphonies, orchestral suites, symphonic poems, etc., of which his "Welsh Rhapsody" (1904) is best known. After Sullivan's death in 1901, German was commissioned to complete his unfinished opera "The Emerald Isle", and he also wrote his own operetta "Merrie England" (1902), to be followed by other operettas ("A Princess of Kensington" (1903), "Tom Jones" (1907), "Fallen Fairies" (1909)). He thus came to be regarded as Sullivan's legitimate successor. His music is generally characterised by lightness and grace rather than depth. He was knighted in 1928, and died in London in 1936.
