He began his career as a violinist with the Royal Danish Orchestra , and saw his concert overture Efterklange af Ossian ("Memories of Ossian ") premiered with them in 1841. When his first symphony was turned down for performance in Copenhagen, he sent it to Felix Mendelssohn . Mendelssohn received the work positively, and conducted it in Leipzig , March 1843, to enthusiastic public reaction. Supported by a fellowship from the Danish government, Gade himself moved to Leipzig, teaching at the Conservatory there, working as an assistant conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra , and befriending Mendelssohn, who had an important influence on his music. Niels Wilhelm Gade From LoveToKnow 1911 NIELS WILHELM GADE (1817-1890), Danish composer, was born at Copenhagen , on the 22nd of February 1817, his father being a musical instrument maker. He was intended for his father's trade, but his passion for a musician's career, made evident by the ease and skill with which he learnt to play upon a number of instruments, was not to be denied. Though he became proficient on the violin under Wexschall, and in the elements of theory under Weyse and Berggreen, he was to a great extent self-taught. His opportunities of hearing and playing in the great masterpieces were many, since he was a member of the court band. In 1840 his Aladdin and his overture of Ossian attracted attention, and in 1841 his Nachklcinge aus Ossian overture gained the local musical society's prize, the judges being Spohr and Schneider. This work also attracted the notice of the king, who gave the composer a stipend which enabled him to go to Leipzig and Italy . In 1844 Gade conducted the Gewandhaus concerts in Leipzig during Mendelssohn's absence, and on the latter's death became chief conductor. In 1848, on the outbreak of the Holstein War, he returned to Copenhagen, where he was appointed organist and conductor of the Musik-Verein. In 1852 he married a daughter of the composer J. P. E. Hartmann. He became court conductor in 1861, and was pensioned by the government in 1876 - the year in which he visited

His first success as a composer came in 1840 with his overture Echoes of Ossian. His first symphony was performed by the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, where he met Mendelssohn and Schumann who greatly influenced his work. Gade succeeded the former as conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in 1847. In 1848 he returned to Copenhagen where he assumed a leading position in the musical life of the country. He was appointed kapellmeister to the court there in 1876 and was eventually made Commander of the Order of Daneborg. Niels Wilhelm Gade Works Gade's orchestral music includes eight symphonies, a Violin Concerto and several concert overtures, with an evocative "A Summer's Day in the Country", five pieces for orchestra. Gade's chamber music includes one mature String Quartet and two String Quintets, a String Sextet and String Octet, Fantasiestücke for clarinet and piano and three Violin Sonatas. His piano music, items of which once formed a general part of popular amateur repertoire, includes a Piano Sonata, Fantasy Pieces and Akvareller (Water-Colours), attractive brief sketches.

Z Niels Wilhelm Gade Biography Niels Wilhelm Gade (February 22, 1817 - December 21, 1890) was a Danish composer, conductor, violinist, organist and teacher. He is considered the most important Danish musician of his day. Gade was born in Copenhagen. He began his career as a violinist with the Royal Orchestra there before sending his first symphony, turned down for performance in Copenhagen, to Felix Mendelssohn. Mendelssohn received the work positively, and conducted it in Leipzig. Gade himself moved to Leipzig, teaching at the Conservatory there, working as an assistant conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and befriending Mendelssohn, who had an important influence on his music. He also became friends with Robert Schumann. He returned to Copenhagen in the late 1840s, becoming director of the Copenhagen Musical Society (a post he retained until his death) and establishing a new orchestra and chorus. He also worked as an organist and was joint director of the Copenhagen Conservatory with Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann (whose daughter Gade married in 1852) and Holger Simon Paulli, and worked as an organist. An important influence on a number of later Scandinavian composers, he encouraged and taught both Edvard Grieg and Carl Nielsen. He died in Copenhagen. Among Gade's works are eight symphonies, a violin concerto, chamber music, piano pieces and a number of large-scale cantatas, Comala (1846) and Elverskud (1853) amongst them, which he called "Koncertstykke". These are sometimes based on Danish folklore.
