B ... Z GIOVANNI GABRIELI (1555-1612)It is not known when Giovanni Gabrieli was born. The entry in the register of his death in 1612 claims that he was 56 or possibly 58 years old. This would place his birth around 1555. Around 1575 , Giovanni, like his uncle before, went to the Bavarian court and was working under Orlando di Lasso. (Arnold, 1979 p. 9) Andrea had known Lasso in Munich and it is possible that this connection helped Giovanni gain employment at the court. By this time music in Munich had also become much more opulent and there were at least 60 musicians on the court payroll. Unfortunately, not much is known of Giovanni's time at Munich. Given the musical conditions there, the trip was probably as beneficial for Giovanni as it was for Andrea years earlier. Giovanni left Munich after the death of his patron, Duke Albrecht, in 1579. His whereabouts are unrecorded until 1584 when he again was in Venice. In 1584, the organist Claudio Merulo resigned his post at San Marco. The resulting vacancy required that a competition be held to find another to fill the post. Andrea was able to have Giovanni fill the post until the competition which was on January 1st, 1585. Not surprisingly, Giovanni won and now uncle and nephew were organists at the church of the patron saint of Venice. Unfortunately, this did not last long because in August of 1585 Andrea passed away. Giovanni held his post until his death in 1612. Also in 1585, Giovanni was appointed to the organist post at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco a religious confraternity. Interestingly, the man he succeeded was to succeed Andrea at San Marco. This appointment allowed Giovanni to compose music for musical combinations other than those present at San Marco. Much of the music composed for the scuola was ceremonial in nature and could be quite lavish at times. Giovanni got on well at the scuola and remained at that post at the rest of his life.

Musical composers are comparable to the great historic and political figures throughout the centuries. Some have changed the course of history with an ingenious breakthrough, while others have simply chosen to pursue a passion. Many have gathered followers and those wanting to learn of their ways. Many have also gained enemies, those who see these creative minds as a threat. Those afraid of differences and afraid of change. However, in a world where music was life, where composers were revered, praised, and showered with riches for their talents, there lived a man who crossed the musical boundaries. Through his music, he stepped into a new world full of passion and possibility. This man was Giovanni Gabrieli. Giovanni Gabrieli was born in Venice, Italy in the mid-sixteenth century. Though Gabrieli's exact birth date is unknown, Denis Arnold, author of Giovanni Gabrieli, speculates that Gabrieli was born in or around 1555. In the era the Gabrieli was born, Venice was in its communal prime, and was the musical envy of much of Europe. "Venice was undoubtedly one of the great centers of music making" (Arnold, 9). In the mid-sixteenth century Venice was a musical fe, with a vast array of sacred and secular music. It is very fortunate that Gabrieli would have such a variety of music surrounding and influencing him as he grew into the composer he was destined to be. Perhaps the greatest musical influence on young Gabrieli was a paternal one as well. Andrea Gabrieli, Giovanni's uncle, was an unknown organist according to Arnold at the time of his nephew's birth. He studied under the tutelage of Orlando di Lasso, and in turn, taught his nephew and many other pupils well. Giovanni truly loved and admired his uncle. "Giovanni's esteem for his uncle glows in many a work" (Arnold, 11).

Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli
Venetian composers. Andrea worked at the Bavarian court in Munich and in 1564 became an organist at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, where he remained the rest of his life. He wrote more than 200 madrigals and much other secular vocal music. His sacred vocal works, which number more than 150, include many splendid settings for church festivals; many were published posthumously in a collection called Concerti (1587). His nephew and student, Giovanni, joined him as organist at St. Mark's in 1584. Like Andrea, he wrote numerous festive works for choirs and instrumental groups. His best-known works are those for instruments, especially wind instruments (canzonas, ricercars, sonatas, toccatas, etc.), which employ dramatic dynamic and spatial effects. His student conveyed the Venetian style to Germany. document.writeln(AAMB2); More on "Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli" from Britannica Concise Hassler, Hans Leo

Giovanni Gabrieli was a leading figure in Renaissance Venician music. He succeeded his uncle Andrea Gabrieli, an organist at Venice's St. Mark Basilica after his uncle's death in 1586 and retained this position until his own death in 1612. His work as a composer represents the height of musical achievement in Renaissance Venice. Gabrieli continued the traditional cori spezzati techniques developed at St. Mark's during the sixteenth century, contrasting different groups of singers and instrumentalists and making use of the spatial effects possible in the great basilica. His eight-part setting of the Jubilate, using double choir and brass, is typical of his style of writing. The most widely known of Gabrieli's works is the Sonata pian' e forte , an eight-part composition for two four-part groups of wind instruments included in the Sacrae Symphoniae of 1597, with a number of instrumental Canzoni

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Giovanni Gabrieli Biography Giovanni Gabrieli (born around 1557, died August 12, 1612) was an Italian composer.
Giovanni studied with his uncle, the composer Andrea Gabrieli, and with Orlande de Lassus. He became principal organist at the church of San Marco in Venice in 1585, and following his uncle's death the following year also took the post of principal composer. San Marco had a long tradition of musical excellence and Gabrieli's work there made him one of the most noted composers in Europe. Like composers before and after him, he would use the unusual layout of the church, with its two choir lofts facing each other, to create striking spatial effects. Several of his pieces are written so that a choir will first be heard from the left, followed by a response from the choir to the right.
Gabrieli was quite an original composer, and is seen by many as an important transitional figure between the renaissance and baroque periods. In his works can be found early uses of basso continuo and, in the Sonata pian e forte, some of the earliest dynamic markings (about how loud or quiet the music should be). He was also one of the first to use instrumental parts in choral works. In 1597 he published the collection of vocal music Sacrae symphoniae which become known across the continent. He later taught figures such as Michael Praetorius and Heinrich Schutz. Giovanni Gabrieli Resources Contact Us Sitemap
