Gabrieli was most likely born in Venice . He was one of five children, and his father came from the town of Carnia to Venice shortly before Giovanni's birth. While not much is known about Giovanni's early life, he probably studied with his uncle, the composer Andrea Gabrieli ; he may indeed have been brought up by him, as is implied in some of his later writing. He also went to Munich to study with the renowned Orlando de Lassus at the court of Duke Albrecht V ; most likely he stayed there until about By he had returned to Venice, where he became principal organist at Saint Mark's Basilica in , after Claudio Merulo left the post; following his uncle's death the following year he took the post of principal composer as well. Also after his uncle's death he began editing much of the older man's music, which would otherwise have been lost; Andrea evidently had had little inclination to publish his own music, but Giovanni's opinion of it was sufficiently high that he devoted much of his own time to compiling and editing it for publication.

Brief biography: Giovanni Gabrieli was an important Venetian composer and arguably one of the most influential composers of his time. Most sources put his birth in 1555; but some claim as early as 1553. The exact location of his birth is also unknown, although Venice is the most likely location considering his uncle Andres Gabrieli Andres Gabrieli was one of the most productive and published composers of his time, working for the Duke of Bavaria and as an organist at the Basilica di San Marco. It was these connections which got Giovanni his first job in the Bavarian court as a singer working under Orlando de Lassus In 1584, Giovanni took up the position of organist at the Basilica di San Marco after Claudio Merulo resigned. In 1585, Giovanni was appointed as organist at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco. While holding these prestigious posts, Giovanni composed "grand ceremonial music" and was one of the most renowned teachers of his time, instructing pupils such as

http://axe.acadiau.ca/~067052o/bio.htm
Biography Giovanni Gabrieli was a composer and organist of the Venetian high renaissance who was known almost entirely for the vocal and instrumental music that he wrote for the church. No one is certain when or where Giovanni Gabrieli was born. An entry in Venetian necrology from 1612 records Gabrieli's age as either fifty-six or fifty-eight years old at the time of his death in 1612. This leads most scholars to believe that he was born between 1554 and 1557. He was one of three sons (Giovanni, Domencio and Matteo) and two daughters (Angela and Marina) born to Piero di Fais ('called Gabrieli'). Little information is available about Giovanni Gabrieli’s family circle and financial situation, other than that his father probably died before 1572. It is possible that Giovanni was brought up by his uncle, Andrea Gabrieli, who was also a composer and organist. There is very little information available about the relationship between Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, although a few sources indicate that the relationship between the two men may have been almost filial. Giovanni went to Munich around 1575 to study under Orlande de Lassus at the court of Duke Albrecht V, like Andrea had. Munich is where Giovanni produced his first madrigals to be published. He probably left this employment in the early 1580's as part of the exodus of musicians after the death of Duke Albrecht in the 1579.

Towards the end of the sixteenth century, with the cathedral of St Mark’s at the hub of its ceremonial and sacred occasions. The Gabrielis were among the first Italians to hold important positions there, following the eminent Franco-Flemish composer Adrian Willaert, who was Maestro di Capella there from 1527. The young Andrea Gabrieli was probably one of Willaert's pupils. Certainly he sang in St Mark's, was organist at the church of San Geremia, and travelled as part of Duke Albrecht's retinue, meeting Lassus in Germany. He became Maestro di Capella at St Mark's in 1555, gaining a reputation as a composer, organist and teacher. He remained there until his death. His madrigals were lighter and more pastoral than those of his peers, and he decorated his themes with rhythmic patterns. He was also responsible for evolving a style of sacred music appropriate to the performing requirements of St Mark's, as well as suited to the Venetian love of pomp, using several choirs cori spezzati, or

GABRIELI, GIOVANNI BIOGRAPHY
Giovanni Gabrieli was a leading figure in Renaissance Venician music. He succeeded his uncle Andrea Gabrieli, an organist at Venice's St. Mark Basilica after his uncle's death in 1586 and retained this position until his own death in 1612. His work as a composer represents the height of musical achievement in Renaissance Venice. Gabrieli continued the traditional cori spezzati techniques developed at St. Mark's during the sixteenth century, contrasting different groups of singers and instrumentalists and making use of the spatial effects possible in the great basilica. His eight-part setting of the Jubilate, using double choir and brass, is typical of his style of writing. The most widely known of Gabrieli's works is the Sonata pian' e forte , an eight-part composition for two four-part groups of wind instruments included in the Sacrae Symphoniae of 1597, with a number of instrumental

Composer. Nephew and pupil of Andrea Gabrieli . Court musician in Munich from 1575 or earlier until 1579, then an organist at St. Mark's, Venice, from 1584 until his death. After 1586 his duties included composition. His works are mostly sacred or instrumental, except for a few madrigals and canzonettas written in the 16th century.
Among the sacred compositions of Giovanni Gabrieli are a Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Benedictus, all included in a print of 1597 and presumably belonging to a single Mass. The lower parts of the Kyrie appear to be instrumental, the highest for a vocal soloist. This part has piano and forte echo effects and coloratura writing that requires a virtuoso performer. Another Benedictusfrom Book II of the Sacrae symphoniae of 1615is for three choirs consisting of TrebleSST, SATB, and TTTB. At the beginning, these choirs twice follow each other in the order lowest-highest-middle and then gradually build up to a resounding Osanna, in which all twelve voices participate. However magnificent this Benedictus may be, it is nevertheless true that Mass composition was of secondary importance to Giovanni, as it was to most of his Venetian contemporaries. The golden age of the polyphonic Mass, indeed, was drawing to a close. In Giovanni's motets, however, the Venetian style of polychoral composition attained its culmination. Motets of his began to appear in the 1587 volume representing him and
