The uncle of the somewhat more famous Giovanni Gabrieli , he was the first internationally renowned member of the Venetian School of composers, and was extremely influential in spreading the Venetian style in Italy as well as in Germany Contents Life Works References Notes ... edit Life Details on Gabrieli's early life are sketchy. He was probably a native of Venice , most likely the parish of S. Geremia. He may have been a pupil of Adrian Willaert at St. Mark's in Venice at an early age. There is some evidence that he may have spent some time in Verona in the early 1550s, due to a connection with Vincenzo Ruffo, who worked there as maestro di cappella – Ruffo published one of Gabrieli's madrigals in 1554, and Gabrieli also wrote some music for a Veronese academy. Andrea worked at the Bavarian court in Munich and in 1564 became an organist at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, where he remained the rest of his life. He wrote more than 200 madrigals and much other secular vocal music. His sacred vocal works, which number more than 150, include many splendid settings for church festivals; many were published posthumously in a collection called Concerti (1587). His nephew and student, Giovanni, joined him as organist at St. Mark's in 1584. Like Andrea, he wrote numerous festive works for choirs and instrumental groups. His best-known works are those for instruments, especially wind instruments (canzonas, ricercars, sonatas, toccatas, etc.), which employ dramatic dynamic and spatial effects. Almost nothing is known of his life before 1557, when he first tried (unsuccessfully) to become organist at St. Mark's, Venice. A lasting friendship with Lassus began during a trip to Germany in the early 1560s. A pupil of Adrian Willaert , he gained fame as a singer at St. Mark's and later was successful in becoming second organist there after Claudio Merulo . The position of organist at St. Mark's was his from 1566 until his death. His influence in the later 16th century was considerable, especially in Italy but also in Germany. His works are among the first by a native Venetian to escape the dominance of the Netherlandish style. Innovative techniques are found particularly in the ceremonial music composed after he took up his post at St. Mark's. Such music tends to be homophonic, largely syllabic, perhaps polychoral, and above all sonorous. His many compositions, in nearly every genre known at the time, include sacred vocal pieces (Masses, Psalms, motets, concerti); madrigals (eight books and many independent pieces); other secular vocal works of various types; and many instrumental compositions (canzonas, ricercars, intonationi, and toccatas), most for keyboard.
