Organist on Cavaillé-Coll organs in Saint-Jean-Saint-François (1842-1857), then at Sainte-Clotilde (1857-1890) The "Douze Pièces" (six dated between about 1856 and 1863, three in 1878 and three in 1890) are universally considered to be the summit of XIXth Century organ music. Barely conceivable without Cavaillé-Coll's organs, they are to organ music what Beethoven's piano sonatas are to the piano. An unending search for colours, gestures, a great form that springs from very personal themes. Like no other person before him and (very few since) Franck used the ranges, dynamic possibilities, good attack, acoustic effects and many other features unique to his friend's instruments.
Without doubt, the loss of the improvisations of Franck and Bruckner can be ranked among the greatest losses to the world of music. Both integrated the organ into their symphonic works. Shortly before the master's death, a student paid a moving tribute to him: "both in his works and in French music, his organ compositions are an isolated and unique monument that has neither found its match nor been imitated".

Executive summary: Symphonic Variations Ruth , a biblical cantata was produced with success at the Conservatoire in 1846. An opera entitled Le Valet de Ferme Franck was appointed professor of the organ at the Paris Conservatoire, in succession to Benoist, his old master, in 1872, and the following year he was naturalized a Frenchman. Until then he was esteemed as a clever and conscientious musician, but be was now about to prove his title to something more. A revival of his early oratorio, Ruth , had brought his name again before the public, and this was followed by the production of , a work for solo, chorus and orchestra, given under the direction of M. Colonne on the 10th of April 1873. The unconventionality of the music rather disconcerted the general public, but the work nevertheless made its mark, and Franck became the central figure of an enthusiastic circle of pupils and adherents whose devotion atoned for the comparative indifference of the masses. His creative power now manifested itself in a series of works of varied kinds, and the name of Franck began gradually to emerge from its obscurity. The following is an enumeration of his subsequent compositions:

Born at Liège in 1822, Cèsar Franck was originally intended by his father for a career as a virtuoso pianist. In Paris his nationality excluded him at first from the Conservatoire, where he eventually failed to achieve the necessary distinction as a performer, turning his attention rather to composition.
In 1846 he left home and went to earn his living as a teacher and organist, winning particular fame in the second capacity at the newly built church of Ste. Clotilde, with its Cavaillè-Coll organ. MIDI FILE - Chorale No.1 for organ

He drew to him a loyal and devoted circle of pupils and in 1871 won some official recognition as the nominated successor of Benoist as organ professor at the Conservatoire.
A man of gentle character, known to his pupils as Pater seraphicus, he exercised considerable influence through his classes and performances, although remaining something of an outsider as a composer in a Paris interested largely in opera.
César Franck Works Franck's best known orchestral works are the Symphonic Variations for solo piano and orchestra and the Symphony in D minor, completed in 1888 and first performed at a Conservatoire concert the following year.

    Biographie

Franck Violin Sonata in A major
César Franck (1822-1890) was born Liège, Belgium December 10, 1822 and became a French citizen in 1873 where he made his home until he died November 8, 1890. At the age of 11, he made a piano concert tour of Belgium. He studied music at the Paris Conservatoire. He sought to incorporate the achievements of Romanticism in an essentially Classical framework, with a harmonic idiom influenced to some extent by the chromaticism of Liszt and Wagner. He practiticed the modern cyclical form where themes recur in modified form throughout a work. He was the founder of a new school of organ in France , and indeed the fountainhead of the whole movement that gave renewed vitality to French musical education and composition beginning with the estblishment of the Société nationale de musique Française (national Society for French Music) in 1871.
Franck was the founder of modern French chamber music. He wrote the well-known Violin Sonata in A Major in 1889. It employs cyclical themes - that is, themes that recur identically or are transformed in two or more different movements.
Underlying all his work was a warm religious idealism and a belief in the serious social mission of the artist. His music evidences a certain anti-Romantic logic in the working out of ideas and a pointed avoidance of Romantic extremes of expression, together with some midly chromatic innovations in harmony and a systematic application of the cyclical principle.

In 1853 he became choirmaster, and in 1858 organist, of the church of Sainte-Clotilde, Paris, where his outstanding ability as an improviser drew listeners from far and wide, incl. His pupils, led by d'Indy In his early works Franck was influenced by the Variations Symphoniques for pf. and orch. from 1885. Franck's harmonic idiom, no doubt influenced by Wagner and by the org.-loft, has a pungent individuality which exerted a powerful sway not only over his pupils but over a much later generation, e.g.
