Field was born in Dublin in 1782, the eldest son of Protestant Irish parents. His father, Robert Field, earned his living by playing the violin in Dublin theatres. Field first studied the piano under his grandfather (also named John Field), who was a professional organist, and later under Tommaso Giordani . He made his debut at the age of nine, a performance that was well-received, on 24 March in Dublin . His family moved to Bath in 1793, and later that same year went to London . Field's father there secured for him an apprenticeship with the pianist and piano manufacturer Muzio Clementi . He attracted favourable comment from Joseph Haydn for his performances. By the time he was seventeen, Field had already premiered his First Piano Concerto (he wrote seven of them); it was one of the last acts of his apprenticeship. He was lionized as a performer for several years before turning to composition, beginning with his first set of piano sonatas, dedicated to Clementi, published in 1801. In 1801 Field accompanied Clementi on a tour of Paris and Vienna (where he studied briefly with Johann Georg Albrechtsberger ). When Clementi moved to Russia, Field followed him there, continuing his employment demonstrating his pianos. Field established his own concert career in Russia, and by 1806 was dividing his time between

    12. John Field The Irish Romantic
A brief biography of john field (17821837), listing his major compositions and giving insights into his career in England and Russia.
    http://www.carolinaclassical.com/articles/field.html
    by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
Enthusiasts of early Romantic piano music are familiar with the name of John Field (1782-1837). Students of piano literature have likely studied one or more solos by Field. But the richness of the composer's inventiveness and the genuine innovations he made in piano playing and in establishing the independent piano piece as a legitimate solo genre for concert performance have largely and undeservedly been overshadowed by the accomplishments of those who followed him. Many of these later Nineteenth Century composers used Field's compositions as models for their own works, and they built upon his techniques and extended them into the full flowering of Romantic piano music.
A musical harbinger of the Romantic Epoch, John Field was the first important composer in a line of early Romantic pianists that began with him and ended with Frédéric Chopin. Born into a Protestant family in Dublin, Ireland, on July, 26th, 1782, John Field was the eldest son of Robert Field, a violinist who played in Dublin theatres. Field studied first with his father and his grandfather, John Field, a church organist. When he was nine years old, he began a brief period of study with Tommaso Giordani, who sponsored his first public performances in three "Spiritual Concerts" at the Rotunda Assembly Rooms, Rutland Square, in March and April of 1792.
In 1793, the Field family moved to London, either to improve the father's position or to launch the son in a musical career. By August 1793, John Field had entered an apprenticeship in London with Muzio Clementi (the famous Italian composer, pianist, and publisher) for seven years for the sum of 100 guineas. Robert Field joined the orchestra of the Haymarket Theatre. John's first public appearance in England took place at the London Tavern on December 12, 1793, when he played "a Lesson on the new Grand Piano Forte" at a benefit concert under the patronage of the Prince of Wales. He also played a concerto by Dussek at a benefit concert in 1794. Otherwise, Clementi held him back from public performances.

    FIELD, JOHN BIOGRAPHY
To the Irish pianist and composer John Field has been credited the invention of the Nocturne, a form later adopted and developed by Chopin. Field was born in Dublin in 1782, the son of a violinist, but moved with his family to London in 1793, perhaps taking violin lessons from Haydn's friend Salomon. He became an apprentice of Muzio Clementi, appearing in a series of important London concerts, and later touring widely. After concerts in Russia, he remained in St. Petersburg, where he became a fashionable teacher and performer, moving to Moscow in 1821. Illness brought him, in 1831, to London again, a visit followed by a continental tour and a final return to Moscow, where he died in 1837. Piano Music Although Field wrote seven piano concertos and a series of chamber compositions for piano and strings, his chief claim on posterity lies in his eighteen Nocturnes.

    John Field
Inasmuch as the year 1914 was the centenary of the nocturne (invented by an Irish composer, John Field), it may be of interest to give a short biography of that remarkable virtuoso, especially as no English memoir is as yet accessible. There are monographs in French, Italian, German and Russian, while the latest memoir is also in German, and was presented as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Leipzig by Heinrich Dessauer in 1911. Let me at once say that all the existing notices of Field - even Dessauer's book and the notice in the new edition of Grove's Dictionary - contain no hint of his early triumphs in his native city of Dublin as a prodigy pianist. Recent research has unearthed much new material which, as here summarized, will prove useful to the future biographer of Field. John Field - the son of Robert Field, of Golden Lane, Dublin - was born on July 26, 1782, and was baptized at St. Werburgh's Church on September 30 of the same year. His father had "conformed" to the Protestant Church, owing to the fierce penal laws against Catholics, and had set up a fashionable academy as professor of the violin. He was also ripieno violin in the orchestra of the Theatre Royal, Crow Street, and was one of the original subscribers to the Charitable Musical Society in 1787.

    In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army I N FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. McCrae's "In Flanders Fields" remains to this day one of the most memorable war poems ever written. It is a lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient in the spring of 1915. Here is the story of the making of that poem: Although he had been a doctor for years and had served in the South African War, it was impossible to get used to the suffering, the screams, and the blood here, and Major John McCrae had seen and heard enough in his dressing station to last him a lifetime. As a surgeon attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Major McCrae, who had joined the McGill faculty in 1900 after graduating from the University of Toronto, had spent seventeen days treating injured men Canadians, British, Indians, French, and Germans in the Ypres salient.

Executive summary: Irish composer of Nocturnes Irish musical composer and pianist, born at Dublin in 1782. He came of a musical family, his father being a violinist, and his grandfather (also a John Field) the organist in one of the churches of Dublin. From the latter the boy received his first musical education. When a few years later the family settled in London, Field became the favorite pupil of the celebrated Muzio Clementi Frederic Chopin 's models. Field's execution on the pianoforte was nearly allied to the nature of his compositions, beauty and poetical charm of touch being one of the chief characteristics of his style. Moscheles, who heard Field in 1831, speaks of his "enchanting legato, his tenderness and elegance and his beautiful touch." Father: Robert Field (violinist)

Please forgive Brother John for quoting himself. The quote was taken from my very first posting for Ye Olde Blog, back on April 12, 2005. Wow, was it that long ago? Not such a long time, in numerical terms. In life terms, it seems like. . .well, a lifetime.
But the above quote serves a purpose. There’s no sense repeating what I’ve already said, and said in a more concise way than I could if I attempted to do so today.
Kindred Souls, this is the hardest post I’ve ever written. Why the hardest? Because it will be the last one.
