Morton Feldman was born in New York on January 12, 1926. Music became a part of his life at an early age. As a twelve-year-old, he studied piano with Madame Maurina-Press and began to write his own compositions. In 1949, Feldman met John Cage and developed an artistic association crucial to music in America in the 1950s. Cage encouraged Feldman to trust his instincts, advice which helped free Feldman to create his totally intuitive compositions. He has never used any formalized systems, working instead from moment to moment, from one sound to the next.
Feldman surrounded himself with creative geniuses. His friends in 1950s New York included composers Earle Brown and Christian Wolff ; painters Mark Rothko Philip Guston Franz Kline Jackson Pollock and Robert Rauschenberg ; and pianist David Tudor . The painters in particular influenced Feldman to search for his own sound world, one that was more immediate and more physical than any Feldman had explored before.

(to Philip Guston) Palais de Mari Aki Takahashi is a critically acclaimed virtuoso pianist playing a full spectrum of 20th century music. Aki has premiered many works by important composers as well as compositions written specifically for her. A prolific catalog of her recordings exists abroad including a couple of outstanding Feldman discs. Until now, her recordings have not been widely available here with the exception of her historic Piano Space set and other recitals on CP , works of Peter Garland on New Albion and, of course, Feldman's Piano and String Quartet with the Kronos Quartet. Morton Feldman's sound-world no longer needs an introduction. Feldman was especially fond of Aki's playing, so much so that he had selected certain works particularly for her. Together they toured this program, with Feldman speaking about the compositions and Aki performing them. In addition to this being the inaugural release in Mode's new Feldman Edition, it is also the beginning of a series featuring the tremendous talent of Aki Takahashi. Future releases will find her performing works by Iannis Xenakis and Luciano Berio, as well as recitals of ensemble music by Paul Bowles and Peter Garland with Essential Music.

Morton Feldman John Cage 1967 saw the start of Feldman's association with Universal Edition with the publication of his last graphically notated score, "In Search of an Orchestration". Then followed "On Time and the Instrumental Factor" (1969) in which he once more returned to precise notation, and from then on, with only the exception of two works in the early 1970s, he maintained control over pitch, rhythm, dynamics and duration. In 1973 the University of New York at Buffalo asked Feldman to become the Edgard Varese Professor, a post he held for the rest of his life. From the late 1970s his compositions expanded in length to such a degree that the second string quartet can last for up to five and a half hours. The scale of these works in particular has often been the cause for the controversy surrounding his works, but he would always be happy to attempt to explain his reasoning behind them: My whole generation was hung up on the 20 to 25 minute piece. It was our clock. We all got to know it, and how to handle it. As soon as you leave the 20-25 minute piece behind, in a one-movement work, different problems arise. Up to one hour you think about form, but after an hour and a half it's scale. Form is easy - just the division of things into parts. But scale is another matter. You have to have control of the piece - it requires a heightened kind of concentration. Before, my pieces were like objects; now, they're like evolving things.

Feldman then discusses the contemporary music scene that he grew up in, during the 1940s when there was a distinct absence of experimental music being presented. He also talks about the genesis of works to be performed at that evening's concert, Two Pianos False relationships and the Extended Ending (1968), and Swallows of Salangan (1961). In this context he talks about his use of graphic notation and the problems he encountered regarding the control of rhythm. Post-Concert Discussion November 20, 1972

    For Samuel Beckett

    Morton Feldman (1926-1987)
No other musician on these pages can stake a claim for primary Beckett-related importance more than Morton Feldman, the iconoclastic American composer. Not only are Feldman's timeless, repetitive compositions often evocative of Beckett's minimalist prose, but a meeting in Berlin, 1976, lead to a warm relationship between the composer and the writer, one that bore fruit in several projects and collaborations.
Born in New York in 1926, Morton Feldman studied music and piano privately with several teachers before becoming the pupil of Stefan Wolpe after graduating high school in 1944. Spending much of this time "arguing about music," Feldman absorbed his lessons in academic atonality, but found himself still struggling to find his own voice. (He also absorbed some of his teacher's fondness for the visual arts.) In 1950 he met John Cage at a New York performance of Webern's Opus 21, quickly falling into a relationship that had a profound impact on his artistic development. Encouraging the younger composer to follow his instincts, to open his music to indeterminacy, and to challenge all forms of received tradition, John Cage became a mentor and even something of a father-figure, and their friendship lasted the rest of their lives.
