Introduction (born Pamiers, 12 May 1845; died Paris, 4 November 1924). He trained at the Ecole Niedermeyer (1854-65) as organist and choirmaster, coming under the influence of and his circle while working as a church musician (at Rennes, 1866-70; St. Sulpice, 1871-3; the Madeleine, from 1874) and giving lessons. Though he met Liszt and was fascinated by Wagner , he sought a distinctive style in his piano pieces and numerous songs, which had to be composed during summer holidays. Recognition came slowly owing to the modernity of his music. In 1892 he became national inspector of of the provincial conservatories, and in 1896 chief organist at the Madeleine and composition professor at the Conservatoire, where his pupils included Ravel , Koechlin, Roger-Ducasse, Enescu and Nadia Boulanger; from 1905 to 1920 he was the Conservatoire's resolute and influential director, becoming celebrated for the vocal and chamber masterpieces he produced until his death. op. 61) and three collections each of twenty pieces (1879, 1897, 1908). In chamber music he enriched all the genres he attempted, while his works for piano (chiefly nocturnes, barcarolles and impromptus) embody the full scope of his stylistic evolution. Among his few large-scale works, the popular and delicately written Requiem op. 48 and the "song opera"

... Home Page Gabriel Faurè Life In the rigid official musical establishment of Paris in the latter half of the 19th century Gabriel Faurè won acceptance with difficulty. He was a pupil of Camille Saint-Saens at the Louis Niedermeyer School. He played the organ in various Parisian churches for many years and eventually became chief organist and choirmaster at La Madeleine. In 1897 he became a teacher at the Paris Conservatoire, where his pupils included Boulanger, Ravel and Enescu He was appointed director of the Conservatoire in 1905 and introduced a number of necessary reforms. Fauré retired in 1920, after which he was able to devote himself more fully to composition, notably two final chamber works, a piano trio and a string quartet. The most outstanding characteristic of his music is its elegance and reserve. Gabriel Fauré Works In 1893 Faurè wrote incidental music for a production of Molière's Le bourgeois gentilhomme. The Sicilienne for this production was later used again in incidental music for Maeterlinck's play "Pellèas et Mèlisande" and later still won popularity in a variety of arrangements, including the composer's own orchestral version and arrangement for violin or cello and piano.

16. The Music Chamber - Gabriel Fauré
gabriel Fauré was a profound composer of chamber music. He was one of the great romantic composers that France produced during this era.

Introduction
romantic composers that France produced during this era. His music speaks eloquently to our ears today and his music is still widely played today. He was heavily influenced by the music of Robert Schumann Franz Liszt , and Richard Wagner
Historical Context
took over his teaching duties, he was finally introduced to the previously mentioned composers who had a string influence in his future compositions. He began to compose, and in 1865 he graduated from that school of music, winning first prize in composition. He began his career as an organist in Rennes. He then enlisted in the army and upon his return to Paris he began the Society for the promotion of modern French composers along with other composers of the time. In 1887, he began to compose his most famous piece, Requiem, which was for string orchestra and choir. With this piece, his reputation grew and he was appointed as the professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire. With the added income from this position, he could focus more on his work rather than worrying about his financial status. At the age of 60 he was finally receiving the recognition he deserved. His masterpiece, an opera called Penelope, was possibly his greatest work, but due the bankruptcy of the opera house where it was to be played, it never gained the respect that it deserved. He slowly began to seclude himself due to the onset of deafness. His pieces began to become more mellow as seen in Violin Sonata #2 and Cello Sonata #1. He retired from his position at the Paris Conservatoire and he died in 1924.
