Classical Music Friday: Manuel de Falla's Homage de Debussy
Well, virtually anyone who knows anoything about classical music has heard of Claude Debussy. Still quite famous, but lesser-known is the Spaniard Manuel de Falla. As this piece shows, stylistically, de Falla and Debussy had some things in common. Both wrote during the period between World Wars I and II, and both wrote what has been called "impressionistic" music. De Falla, being a native of Spain, however, infused his pieces with many kinds of sound that are not to be found in Debussy. Nights in the Gardens of Spain and El Amor Brujo (Love the Magician) are two excellent places to start discovering his music. This

The Seven Spanish Folksongs La Vida Breve (1904-05). It was, however, after his return to Madrid that all he had absorbed in matters musical came to fruition. He produced a string of masterworks that have become perennials in the concert repetory; El Amor Brujo (Love the Magician) Nights in the Gardens of Spain (1916), and the brilliant (in all senses of the word) ballet The Three-Cornered Hat Ballet Russe , with scenery by his countryman Pablo Picasso. The Seven Spanish Folksongs feature songs from different regions of Spain, and while the texts are authentic folk material, the melodies are often varied and the accompaniment treated even more freely - in the "Impressionist" style of the time. The first two songs

Performances: Jan 19/20, 2008 Falla’s music is completely Spanish in feeling and expression. All the characteristic features of Spanish popular music are to be found in his works. So authentic is his reconstruction of the native idioms that many critics have classified a work like “El Amor Brujo” as a pure folklore product. But this ballet contains not a single folk tune, though it is directly inspired by the gypsy folklore of Andalusia The process by which Falla achieves this authentic yet personal reconstruction is one of assimilation rather than imitation.— Gilbert Chase Born to a prosperous Cadiz family, Manuel de Falla (1876-1946) started piano study with his mother and, like Gershwin, quickly made his way through a long series of piano teachers. Torn between a musical and a literary career, Falla eventually chose music. Around the same time, at age 17, Falla discovered the music of Grieg and was so impressed with Grieg’s nationalism that he decided “to create one day something similar with Spanish music.” Falla studied at the Madrid Conservatory in 1898-99 and was heavily influenced by Felipe Pedrell, a central figure in Spanish nationalistic music.
