Manuel de Falla was born in C¡diz . His early teacher in music was his mother; at the age of 9 he was introduced to his first piano professor. From the late 1890s he studied music in Madrid , piano with Jos© Trag³ and composition with Felipe Pedrell . In 1899 by unanimous vote he was awarded the first prize at the piano competition at his school of music, and around that year he started to use de with his first surname, making de Falla the name he became known as from that time on. It was from Felipe Pedrell, during Madrid period, that de Falla became interested in native Spanish music, particularly Andalusian flamenco (specifically cante jondo ), the influence of which can be strongly felt in many of his works. Among his early pieces are a number of zarzuelas , but his first important work was the one-act opera La vida breve Life is Short , or The Brief Life , written in 1905, though revised before its premiere in 1913).

Musically Speaking: Your Guide to Classical Music Manuel de Falla
Nights in the Gardens of Spain and The Three-Cornered Hat
Beginning in the waning years of the 19th century, Spanish composers turned to the rich tradition of Spanish folk music for materials and inspiration, and in doing so imbued their compositions with a colorful national character. The most brilliant of those composers was Manuel de Falla. Fusing the rhythms and melodic traits of Spanish folk music with a modern palette of harmonies and instrumentation, Falla created music with the sophistication of Debussy, Ravel, or Stravinsky, but audibly rooted in the folkloric soil of Spain. It is music that blends bright energy and languorous sensuality, strong rhythms and deep lyricism, qualities that have always been part of the mysterious Spanish soul.

    FALLA, MANUEL DE BIOGRAPHY
Stage Works Manuel de Falla helped to support his family in Madrid, after a change in their fortunes, by composing zarzuelas, typically Spanish musical comedies. His first substantial stage work was the lyric drama La vida breve, completed in 1905 and first staged in Nice in 1913. The ballet El amor brujo (Love the Magician), with its ghostly story of gypsy jealousy, was first staged in Madrid two years later. The ballet El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), reached its final form for its London production under the impresario Dyagilev in 1919. The puppet opera El retablo de maese Pedro, based on an episode in the classical Cervantes novel Don Quixote, was completed in 1922. There are popular orchestral suites from the first three of these four works. Orchestral Music Vocal Music Chamber Music Among chamber works by de Falla may be included the Concerto for harpsichord, with flute, oboe, clarinet, violin and cello, making use of the early keyboard instrument that had played an important part in his puppet opera El retablo de maese Pedro.

    Born: Died:
Born in 1876 in Cadiz, the historical seaport town at the southern-most tip of Andalucia, Manuel de Falla is the greatest Spanish composer of this century. His formal musical education began with piano lessons, and when Falla was twenty his family moved to Madrid where he studied with the distinguished teacher Jos© Trag³. He then went on to study composition with Felipe Pedrell, the teacher and scholar who led the revival of Spanish music which took place towards the end of the nineteenth century. In 1904 Falla's one-act opera La vida breve (Life is Short) won the composition competition of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes and at the same time he was awarded a prestigious piano prize organised by the piano makers Ortiz y Cuss³.
In 1907 he achieved a long-held ambition of travelling to Paris and was welcomed there by Ravel, Debussy (with whom he had previously corresponded) and especially by Paul Dukas. He completed several chamber works and began work on Noches en los jardines de Esp£na (Nights in Gardens of Spain )before the outbreak of war in 1914 compelled him to return to his native country. Two years later he was approached by Diaghilev to write a work for the Russian Ballet and in response composed a mime-play in two tableaux, El corregidor y la molinera (The Magistrate and the Miller's Wife) which, with some subsequent revisions, became El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), and was produced highly successfully in London in 1919 with choreography by Massine and designs by Picasso.
