    Duke Ellington
    Biography
Ellington called his style and sound "American music" rather than jazz, and liked to describe those who impressed him as "beyond category", including many of the musicians who served with his orchestra, some of whom were themselves considered among the giants of jazz and remained with Ellington's orchestra for decades. While many were noteworthy in their own right, it was Ellington that melded them into one of the most well-known orchestral units in the history of jazz. He often composed specifically for the style and skills of these individuals, such as "Jeep's Blues" for Johnny Hodges, "Concerto for Cootie" ("Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me") for Cootie Williams and "The Mooche" for Tricky Sam Nanton. He also recorded songs written by his bandsmen, such as Juan Tizol's "Caravan" and "Perdido" which brought the "Spanish Tinge" to big-band jazz. After 1941, he frequently collaborated with composer-arranger Billy Strayhorn, who he called his alter-ego. One of the twentieth century's best-known African American celebrities, Ellington recorded for many American record companies, and appeared in several films. Ellington and his orchestra toured the United States and Europe regularly before and after World War II. Ellington led his band from 1923 until his death in 1974. His son Mercer Ellington took over the band until his death in 1996. Today the band performs under the direction of Barry Lee Hall., Jr..

11 ballet of the flying saucers.mp3 (6.42 MB) A Drum Is A Woman is classic Duke Ellington.
On May 8, 1957 A Drum Is A Woman was presented as Episode 18, Season 4 of the nationally televised U.S. Steel Hour series.
The dance suite featured Carmen Delavallade as Madam Zajj, the personification of jazz. Consider the context: no Malcolm, no King on the scene yet; three years after Brown vs. The Board of Education, seven years before the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The only black a person usually saw on television was when you turned the set off. So here comes supremely confident, hip, urbane, witty Duke Ellington and his Orchestra composing what is essentially a combination ballet, opera, historical panorama that wildly conflates jazz into the trope of a woman who is also a drum, muse and heartbeat, sex and creation.
Duke was different from the conventions of his and our time. Duke had deep insights into the origins and artistic importance of his culture, thus his understanding of the conjoined nature of dance and jazz. No one else before or since has even attempted so successful an artistic piece that combines dance, music, lyrics and narration to present a popular history of jazz.
    A Drum Is A Woman
Featured vocalists are Margaret Tynes, Joya Sherrill, and Ozzie Bailey. Featured instrumentalists are Clark Terry on trumpet, Sam Woodyard on drums, Jimmy Hamilton on clarinet, Johnny Hodges on alto, Paul Gonsalves on tenor, Ray Nance on violin and Candido on percussion.

"Let's not pout, gentlemen. It makes bad notes." Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, often said to be America's greatest composer, bandleader, and recording artist, was born on April 29 , 1899 in Washington, D.C. Titled "Duke" as a youngster, Ellington turned down a visual arts scholarship to focus his life on music. With a background in classical, popular, ragtime, and stride music, Ellington emerged as arguably the greatest single talent in the history of jazz.

During the late 1930s The Washington Post was hesitant to pay staff photographers for the late-night hours required to accompany the paper's novice music columnist William Gottlieb on his postshow interviews with jazz musicians at various Washington, D.C., nightclubs. So Gottlieb, inspired by the new photojournalism of Life magazine, learned to take his own photographs. He covered the jazz and blues scene first for The Washington Post and later for Down Beat. He captured this image of Duke Ellington's charismatic presence after a performance at New York's Paramount Theater in the late 1940s. Ellingtonhis reflection caught in a dressing room mirrorlooks fully the part of an American musical giant: debonair and handsome. Creator of such distinctive yet iconic classics as "Mood Indigo," "Sophisticated Lady," and "Satin Doll," Ellington considered his music as both personal expression and a continuation and reaffirmation of the African-American musical heritage. The Gottlieb Photographic Collection contains approximately fifteen hundred images of eminent jazz musicians including Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and Thelonious Monk, and was purchased with funds from a bequest of Ira and Leonore Gershwin for use by the Music Division.

Jan. 7, 2008 GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Wayne Ellington was named ACC Player of the Week and Duke's Kyle Singler was selected as ACC Rookie of the Week. A unanimous selection as the player of the week, Ellington scored an ACC-high 36 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with 0.4 seconds to play, in the Tar Heel's 90-88 overtime win at Clemson Sunday night. On the week, the Wynnewood, Pa., sophomore averaged 26.5 points in two wins on 19-of-30 shooting from the floor, 6-for-11 from three-point range and 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Ellington's 36 points was a career high and the most by a Tar Heel since Tyler Hansbrough scored 40 points two years ago. In earning the rookie award for the third time this season, Singler had 14 points and eight rebounds in Duke's 81-67 win over Cornell on Sunday. The Medford, Ore., native also added four assists, one block and one steal in the contest. He was 5-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line as Duke posted its 58th straight non-conference home victory.

His father was a butler at the White House and a blueprint maker for the US Navy; he acquired his nickname as a teenager from his elegant dress and demeanour. His piano teacher was Miss Clinkscales; later in NYC he had harmony lessons in back seats of taxis from Will Vodery and Will Marion Cook, and tips from Willie 'The Lion' Smith, but he was largely self-taught. He won an NAACP poster-design contest, was offered an art scholarship but left high school to start a sign-painting business, and found that piano playing attracted the girls: asked to paint a poster for a dance he would ask, 'What band have you got?' He went to New York in March 1923 but found no work; he returned that fall with the Washingtonians, led by Elmer Snowden, including Arthur Whetsol, trumpet (

Photos: © Howard University. The Founders Library, Channing Pollock Theatre Collection. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH During his lifetime, Duke Ellington was widely regarded as an ambassador of American music and culture. This unique status was attributed to his combined talents of orchestration and band leading, coupled with his charismatic personality and magnanimous presence. Undeniably one of the most important composers in the history of jazz, with an estimated two thousand compositions, arrangements, and collaborations to his credit, Ellington's career greatly influenced the rise of the jazz band. As an inspired coach and kind-hearted leader, Ellington willingly showcased his musicians and enabled them, in turn, to make a strong impact on jazz styles for their particular instruments. This is borne out by Hodges' approach to alto saxophone ballad interpretation, Blanton's method of horn like solo lines played pizzicato on bass, and Ben Webster's tenor saxophone approach. Ellington's piano style influenced Thelonious Monk, a leading modern jazz composer-pianist, while Ellington's arranging concepts were assimilated by Gil Evans, Thad Jones, George Russell, Clare Fischer, Charles Mingus, Sun Ra, and other significant modern composers. Although Ellington's forte was jazz and his big-band pieces were best known, he also wrote for the Broadway stage, ballets, operas, films and church services. The latter works were scored for symphony orchestra, choruses, and dancers.

L IFELINE back to previous page STYLE
If any one artist can be said to represent jazz in the twentieth century, Ellington makes the strongest claim
, having made telling (and popular) contributions in every era from the beginnings of popular jazz through the popular craze for swing music. His background was that of ragtime, and his first inclination would have been, like Fletcher Henderson to rival the popular white dance bands of his youth; but to that he quickly added the black jazz sounds of two early band members, Bubber Miley (trumpet) and Trick San Nanton (trombome), with their use of voice-like effects in their playing: Black and Tan Fantasy is an early essay in this assembled collage of styles.
Like all the early jazz musicians, Ellington 'learnt on the hoof', and he had, in the shape of his own band, the perfect vehicle for it. Ellington took in all influences as a composer - popular songs, the blues, ballads, instrumental pieces, and his tally of over 2000 known compositions is testimony to his receptive ear and fertile imagination.
Perhaps the most striking feature of both his band leading and compositional style, was his reliance on his soloists

"My mother would say, 'Edward, you are blessed.' Do I believe that I am blessed? Of course I do! My mother told me so, many times, and when she did it was always quietly, confidently."
Duke Ellington Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was born in Washington, D.C., April 29, 1899. He was nicknamed "Duke" by a junior high school friend because of the stylish way in which he dressed and the proud way he carried himself. His parents encouraged him to take piano lessons when he was seven years old, and his parents took him to two church services every Sunday. He had a younger sister and grandparents whom he also loved and respected, and developed strong family values. Duke Ellington grew up proud of his African American heritage, which he expressed in much of the music he would write later on, and in the song

[ Sidenote from Stephen Eberle: ]

"Brothers Ray and Bob Eberle were born with the name Eberle; ending with an 'e'. Bob changed his name early on in his career. He was opening for a Milton Berle show and the announcer kept pronouncing his name wrongly. Rather than having to correct people all the time, Bob changed his name to Eberly to avoid further confusion. Ray Eberle kept his given birthname throughout his lifetime." Ray had no formal training in music, nor any professional experience, however Miller hired him. In hopes of stepping out of his brother shadow, Ray changed the spelling of his last name to Eberle. Miller helped coach Ray and featured him on many of the band's Chesterfield cigarette's radio broadcasts. His handsome looks and dedication to the Miller songbook became a perfect fit with the bands style. His songs sold millions, including "At Last" and "Moonlight Cocktails."
