He was born into a middle-class family in Washington, D.C. on April 29, 1899. James Clyde Sellman writes in Africana Encyclopedia: For nearly half a century Duke Ellington led the premier American big band, and through his compositions and performances he brought artistic credibility to African American jazz. Ellington played the piano, but his orchestra was his true instrument.

Having made a name as a jazz musician in his hometown of Washington, D.C., in the 1920s, Edward "Duke" Kennedy Ellington headed for the big time—New York City. After a rocky start, he landed a gig at the Kentucky Club on Broadway. He played that venue with his orchestra for the next four years.
In 1927, Ellington's orchestra landed a job as the house band at the racially segregated Cotton Club. Ellington welcomed musicians with a distinct technique to his orchestra, and highlighted them in his compositions. His "Concerto for Cootie"—named to honor trumpet player Charles "Cootie" Williams—was the first jazz composition in the form of a concerto (a three-movement piece of music for one or more solo instruments and an orchestra). Ellington did not stop breaking musical conventions there; he also invented his own harmonic language.
As the country sank into the Great Depression in October 1929, many bandleaders had trouble making ends meet. Not Ellington; he flourished. The 1930s found him caught up in a musical and social whirlwind: In addition to touring, playing Broadway shows, appearing in movies like

Duke Ellington
Edward Kennedy (Duke) Ellington began as a stride pianist, and matured into a composer/arranger who was comfortable in a wide range of ensembles from piano and bass duo, to large orchestras. In 1927 his band became house band at the Cotton Club, a position he kept for five years. His popular hits like "Satin Doll" and "Mood Indigo" provided a firm financial base, allowing him to have musicians available to try out his arrangements at all times. He was an influence to others with his unique melodic gifts, his harmonic innovations, and his daring use of odd intervals. He demonstrated how well swing worked with the most contemporary jazz styles of the generation which followed him. Like Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, Miller was another tough taskmaster. Robert W. Dana - December - 5, 1961 Duke Ellington at Basin St. East Duke Ellington and a 15-piece orchestra were the big noise, music and orchestrated sounds last night at the Basin Street East. In 18 dynamic numbers, many of which he composed, the Duke let loose a barrage of instrumentalists and a singer the like of which isn't often one's pleasure to hear. From his "Asphalt Jungle" to the closing "Jones,"this big band hit it high and low, plain and fancy, with much emphasis on solos, by such as Johnny Hodges on the alto saxophone, Cat Anderson, just returned to the fold, Paul Gonzalves on tenor sax and Harry Carney on baritone sax. Being an admirer of old tunes, I really appreciated Cat's interpretation of "All of Me," with Hodges taking a solo, and Duke's own playing on "Satin Doll," followed by his greatest composition, "In My Solitude," a thing of beauty. Full Band Sound.

The emergence of bebop in the late 1940s and early 1950s was bad news for many big bands, including Duke Ellington's. Bebop started as a something of cult movement in New York but after several years it became fashionable and made stars of its main players including Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Theolonius Monk. Bebop was the punk movement of jazz. It rebelled against the swing era, played most numbers at fast tempos and challenged the orthodoxy of jazz soloing. Against this background Duke Ellington's band began to suffer. It lost its fashionable appeal which triggered money problems. Moving 16 or more musicians by bus, plus constant accommodation meant huge expenses. Open wallet surgery Ellington's money-managment had been relaxed at the best of times. His taste for the high-life largely disregarded his income. He continued to indulge in eating at good restaurants and buying expensive clothing. Ellington had a particular penchant for stylish clothes
But the money didn't keep rolling in. The popularity of big bands waned as many younger listeners moved on.

    Robert Graham
Duke Ellington Memorial The sculpture after unveiling In a ceremony crowded with New York politicians and dotted with an artist or two, Robert Graham's Duke Ellington Memorial was unveiled on the northeast corner of Central Park on July 1, 1997. A pleasanter gathering could hardly have been imagined, as the Loren Schoenberg Big Band played selections from the Ellington repertoire, including Jack the Bear and Take the A Train, while dignitaries and residents of the Harlem neighborhood mingled in the noon-time sun. The gala celebration marked the first-ever New York City monument to a black artist, the first memorial in the U.S. to Ellington and the first New York public-art commission for Graham. The Ellington project has been in the works since 1979, when the pianist Bobby Short conceived of the memorial and began raising the approximately $1 million in funds for it. Done in black patinated bronze, the 25-foot-tall memorial stands like a kind of guardian figure, facing outward at the uptown gateway to Central Park and Harlem at Fifth Avenue and 110th Street. The work features an eight-foot-tall sculpture of Ellington standing next to an open grand piano. The tableau is supported by three 10-foot-tall minimalist columns, atop of which stand a total of nine nude caryatid figures representing the muses. It is centered within the Duke Ellington Circle, two semicircular plazas that are gently stepped to form an amphitheater suitable for performances.
