"Duke Ellington's pre-eminence in jazz is not only because of the very high aesthetic standard of his output, not simply due to his remarkable abilities as a pianist, composer and bandleader, but also to the fact that he has extended the boundaries of jazz more than any other musician, without abandoning the true essence of the music." - from G.E. Duke Ellington
    About
The contributions Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington has made to American music cannot be overstated. Ellington led an earthshaking big band with musicians that helped shape jazz and his charts influenced countless arrangers. He wrote dozens of what are now considered standards while he continued to explore and experiment with longer suites. Ellington could produce a great swing song, then a ballad, and then follow it up with an avant-garde orchestral piece all of equal quality. On his own, Ellington was a powerhouse who used members of his orchestra like a painter uses colors and optimized the talents and sounds of each musician. When Billy Strayhorn joined him as a co-arranger, songwriter and piano player, their combined talents led the orchestra to even greater heights. When Duke Ellington was asked to define jazz he replied, "there are only two kinds of music, good and bad." The Duke just may have created more "good" music than anyone in history.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (1899-1974)
composer, musician, bandleader
Ellington was one of the leading figures in jazz history. He was born in Washington, D.C. into a musical family. He was schooled in Washington, D.C. and came under the tutelage of Henry Grant at Armstrong High School, with whom he studied harmony. He began playing the piano at the age of six with Miss Clinkscales, studying later in his career with Will Marion Cook who had been a musical arranger for the vaudeville team Williams and Walker . Ellington got his nickname, "the Duke," while still in high school when he played for local social affairs. At that time he was also a visual artist, but decided in favor of a musical career. By 1919, he'd formed a small band and in the early 1920s, he moved to New York with his wife and son Mercer and played at Barron Wilkins' club. During the Harlem Renaissance, Ellington's band played at the exclusive Cotton Club which admitted white patrons only. He made his recording debut about 1924 and the band recorded under several names, such as the Jungle Band, the Whoopee Makers and the Harlem Footwarmers. Ellington began touring, playing Broadway shows and movies, in the late 1920s. He won increasing recognition as a musician with his compositions and orchestra. The Duke was an innovator and gave jazz a new feeling with his special effects, using instrument in new ways and infusing African and Latin elements into his music.

Name at birth: Edward Kennedy Ellington Duke Ellington started as a pool hall piano player and grew to become one of the great figures in American jazz. Ellington was one of the first to use classical themes in jazz, and is still considered one of the most innovative composers in jazz history. (Many of his later numbers were written with his longtime collaborator Billy Strayhorn , who wrote Ellington's signature tune "Take the 'A' Train.") At the height of his career Ellington toured the world with his orchestra and composed such standards as "Mood Indigo," "In A Sentimental Mood," and "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing." Extra credit : According to the official site of his estate, "Ellington got his nickname of "Duke" from a childhood friend who commented on his elegant manners, bearing, and dress"... Stevie Wonder 's pop hit "Sir Duke" is a tribute to Ellington.

Photos: Reginald Jackson, at Yale University, 1972 In 1972 Duke Ellington, Eubie Blake, Dizzy Gillespie, Slam Stewart, Max Roach, Mary Lou Williams, Odetta, Dave Brubeck and many, many (See DE Fellows) other jazz musicians came to Yale to celebrate this "Conservatory Without Walls". Yale President Kingman Brewster awarded 32 Duke Ellington Medals to these icons. Since that time, 16 other great jazz musicians have received the medal. Materials in this website are largely from that initial summit of jazz musicians in 1972 at Yale University. In the twenty-five years since it was founded, the Duke Ellington Fellowship at Yale has come of age. Great American artists, themselves Ellington Fellows, regularly visit Yale and inner-city school classrooms each year for concerts and classwork. More the 150,000 New Haven school children have heard world class performances, received instruction, and been inspired by our program. While our major focus has been on jazz music played by great orchestras and soloists, Ellington Fellows also inlcude the master singer of spirituals, William Warfield; Joe Williams of the mighty blues tradition; great folk artists such as Odetta and Bessie Jones; and major performers of the American tap school. The Duke Ellington Fellowship's concerts are listed on the Yale School of Music Concert Calendar.

The Duke: The Essential Collection, 1927-1961
(Sony/Legacy) by Mark Anthony Neal
The Duke attempts to put Ellington's musical legacy into some kind of fitting context. Spanning from 1927-1961, The Duke compiles over 60 Ellington recordings from his most formidable years. The Duke is one of many products associated with the celebration of the centennial of Ellington's birth. Given the pervading racism of American society and 20th century cultural criticisms, specifically, Ellington was often denied the broad accolades bestowed upon other American composers and musicians like George Gershwin or Benny Goodman, during his lifetime. As Harold Cruse suggests in The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual While Ellington is clearly one of the most recognizable black artists of the 20th century, he emerged within a society, industry, and critical establishment that was at best condescending and contentious. The racist social science theories of the likes of John Wesley Powell and Lewis Henry Morgan were widely circulated and legitimized within popular culture (ya gotta check out Lee Baker's brilliant From Savage to Negro The Duke The second disc presents the Ellington sound as it is being challenged by the emergence of Be-Bop and Rhythm and Blues. Tracks like the rollicking "Antidisestablishmentarianismist," "Creole Love Call," and "Brown Betty" find Ellington holding on to, if not furthering his vision of the big band. The best testament to Duke's genius was that his popularity did not wane, despite the fact that the big band sound, was for all intents, dead. The jewel of the second disc is the more than seven minute version of "Take the A Train." which features the brilliant vocals of Betty Roche. The song was a reminder that throughout the 20th century, Harlem, remained the Mecca of African-American life. And while other cities clearly influenced what we acknowledge as African-American culture (see Suzanne Smith's
