    Sir Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934)
Sir Edward Elgar was born in Worcester in 1857. Until the outstanding success of the 'Enigma' Variations in 1899, he was considered a 'provincial' composer - and a largely self taught one at that. His delightful Salut d'Amour , one of his earliest successes, dates from 1889, when Elgar had just turned 30: this proved to be a year of great happiness for him, for at that time he married Caroline Alice Roberts - a lady who was to mean so much to him as man and musician. It is not too fanciful to hear, in this charming piece, a musical manifestation of his love for her. In the earlier part of Elgar's career as a composer, he wrote several short pieces which became very popular indeed. Chanson de Matin is one such, the second of a pair (the other being Chanson de nuit ), which carried his name far and wide before his larger orchestra works appeared. It was published in several versions at once: for string orchestra, for small orchestra, for violin and piano and so on - so it is almost impossible to say, with any degree of certainty, which was the original version. But Elgar himself was a good violinist, and it may well be that he would have played this tune through to himself on the violin, before adding a piano part and sending it off to his publishers for their consideration. In any event, it remains a beautiful theme of considerable character and style. If Elgar waited until he was 42 before his major breakthrough, his fame spread rapidly: so much so that by the outbreak of World War 1 he was arguably the most celebrated living British composer, whose reputation had been cemented by a succession of large scale choral and orchestral works. In a curious way, the War changed Elgar - as it touched all Europeans - as his public and private utterances became more sharply defined.

    Edward Elgar (1857 - 1934)
    Background

Edward Elgar was born in Broadheath, Worcester, on 2nd June 1857. His father owned a music-shop in Worcester, and was also an organist and piano tuner. Edward grew up in a highly musical environment, and taught himself to play various instruments, including the organ and the violin. His earliest compositions can be traced to his childhood - at age 12 he wrote incidental music to a family play, The Wand of Youth.
    Early obscurity
During his youth, Elgar played the violin in local orchestras, formed a wind quintet with his brothers and friends, and also became assistant organist to his father at St George's Church, Worcester. In 1879, he became bandmaster at a local lunatic asylum, a position which gave him an opportunity to hone his compositional technique arranging and composing music for staff concerts.
For the next decade he continued to compose for various local musical organisations, and also taught the violin. In 1889, he married one of his pupils, Caroline Alice Roberts, against the wishes of her family. She was to prove a strong and faithful wife, and assisted him greatly throughout his career.

    Edward Elgar
Perhaps one of the greatest English composers ever, Edward Elgar has composed many famous and fascinating works. At first, he was thought to be an extremely minor role in the vast canvas of music. This is due mostly to the fact that he was an Englishman, and there were certainly uncountable composers of Europe, but never one from England. He learned music from his father, a music dealer, organist, and violinist in Worcester. Elgar at one time played the bassoon and picked up enough piano technique to become a talented club accompanist. While he composed and studied, Elgar became a clerk in a law office to support himself. Once he was recognized more as a person with musical qualities, he became the conductor of the Amateur Instrumental Society. At thirty-two, Elgar married, but was still unknown and little-employed as a musician. Everyone knew that England was a good place for composers only if you were a foreigner or your name was Sir Arthur Sullivan. Elgar, determined to prove them wrong, creating his concert overture, Froissrt , in 1890, achieving small success. Soon, six chorale works followed which helped build his reputation. But when his

"I am folk music." This Quintessential of English composers was to have a classically English middle class start to life. He was born in the Malvern Hills in Broadheath, near Worcester. He was the son of an organist who owned a music shop in the town. Elgar was to be brought up in an atmosphere of music and learnt the piano and violin from an early age. At the tender age of 16 he joined a local orchestra as a violinist and rose to become its conductor. He was also to succeed his father as the organist at the Catholic church in Worcester. A self-taught hard working and earnest musician, Elgar formed the opinion that he would never become the master violinist that he so diligently strived for. The Hungarian violinist Adolf Pollitzer, who taught and acted as mentor to Elgar, was also of the same opinion. However, the two of them did realise that Elgar had considerable talent in the field of composition. However, Elgar's modest middle class roots denied him the opportunity to fully appreciate these skills. He was forced to augment his musical craft with teaching in a girls' school in nearby Malvern. At the age of 30, two events were to occur that would decisively influence Elgar's life and reinvigorate his passion for music. The first was the visit of Dvorak to England. The music of this Czech composer was to rekindle Elgar's enthusiasm and imagination for music making. The second event was that he met and married Caroline Alice Roberts. He was to find companionship and inspiration from his wife for the next 30 years that they were to be together. Alice encouraged him to move to London where he might gain greater exposure and recognition for his work. However, despite limited success, particularly with local choirs, real success eluded him and he was forced to concede defeat and return to teaching in Malvern.

    Overture
At the end of the High Street in Worcester stands a statue of Sir Edward Elgar, Bart., O.M., C.H., G.C.V.O., Master of the King's Musick. Its gaze is fixed on the splendours of Worcester Cathedral, scene of many of Elgar's triumphs and an emblem of the England that the composer's music now seems so strongly to embody. Walk down the High Street, away from the Cathedral, and the bronze statue and your steps are taking you back in time, towards Elgar's youth, when fame and fortune seemed beyond the reach even of dreams. A short way along the street, now disfigured by the shopping precinct which swept away the Worcester Elgar knew, you pass the site of the old music shop at No 10, owned by William H. Elgar. To eke out his living, Mr Elgar took on the job of organist at St George's Roman Catholic Church. Carry on down the High Street and, far from the Cathedral at the other end of the city, you will find the church. It still looks very much as it did when Mr Elgar took on the organist's post in 1842. Mr Elgar was not particularly devout. The Jesuit clergy who ran the parish went in for long sermons and it was not unknown for the organist to escape to the nearby inn for a swift pint, timing his return just as Mass was to continue. He must have been doubly content when, in 1873, his 14-year old son Edward was officially appointed assistant organist.

For more information email imagesonline@bl.uk Elgar's 'Enigma Variations on an Original Theme' is one of the most familiar pieces of English music, and portrays the characters of a number of the composer's close friends in subtly humorous ways: the inexpert playing of amateur violists and pianists, or the dramatic splash of a friend's bulldog jumping in the river. This was one of the first works to bring Elgar to public recognition, and was first performed in London in June 1899.
    Who was Elgar?
Edward Elgar (1857-1934) rose from being a proficient amateur in rural England to being an internationally recognised composer of mighty Romantic symphonies, oratorios, orchestral pieces and concertos. Though often thought of as an establishment figure, perhaps thanks to the familiar setting of his 'Pomp and Circumstance March' with the words Land of Hope and Glory, he always felt himself an outsider because of his humble origins, provinicial background and Catholic faith. He was already at work on 'The Dream of Gerontius' when the 'Enigma Variations' first brought him public acclaim. Following performances of the Dream in Germany in 1901 and 1902, Richard Strauss awarded him the accolade 'Meister'. He was knighted in 1904, awarded the Order of Merit in 1911 and made a baronet in 1931.
