Elgar’s father owned a music shop. Apart from having violin lessons Elgar taught himself about music. He studied the printed music in his father’s shop and often travelled with him when he went on his rounds to tune pianos. He heard a lot of cathedral music and often practised the organ . He took over his father’s job as church organist and soon became conductor of local orchestras and bands Worcester was a small town but the music there was good. The Three Choirs Festival took place there every third year. In he was playing the violin in the orchestra when the great Czech composer Dvoř¡k was conducting. In Elgar married. His wife Alice came from a family who had more money than the Elgars, and she was 14 years older than him. Many people did not approve of the marriage, but she was a good wife to him and encouraged him in his efforts to be a successful composer. In Elgar wrote an orchestral piece called the Enigma Variations . There is a main tune, and then a series of variations on the tune. Each variation describes one of his friends, but he did not say which friends they were: he only put their initials or nickname at the top of each variation. This is why the piece is an

SIR EDWARD ELGAR A Short Biography
by Ian Lace
Elgar was born on 2nd June 1857 at Broadheath, a village some three miles from the small city of Worcester in the English West Midlands. His father had a music shop in Worcester and tuned pianos. The Elgar shop in the
centre of Worcester
The young Elgar, therefore, had the great advantage of growing up in a thoroughly practical musical atmosphere. He studied the music available in his father's shop and taught himself to play a wide variety of instruments. It is a remarkable fact that Elgar was very largely self-taught as a composer - evidence of the strong determination behind his original and unique genius. His long struggle to establish himself as a pre-eminent composer of international repute was hard and often bitter. For many years he had to contend with apathy, with the prejudices of the entrenched musical establishment, with religious bigotry (he was a member of the Roman Catholic minority in a Protestant majority England) and with a late Victorian provincial society where class consciousness pervaded everything. Throughout the 1880s and the 1890s his experience grew and his style matured as he conducted and composed for local musical organisations. He also taught the violin and played the organ at St. George's Roman Catholic Church in Worcester.

ELGAR, EDWARD BIOGRAPHY
Edward Elgar was arguably the leading English composer of his generation and a significant figure among late Romantic European musicians. Born in the West of England in 1857, the son of a piano-tuner and owner of a music shop, he earned his earlier living as an organist, violinist and teacher in his own part of the country. After his marriage in 1889 he found himself able to move to London as a composer, but success only came later, after his return to the West Country, confirmed by the Enigma Variations , first performed in London in 1899. He wrote relatively little after the death of his wife in 1920. Choral Music Elgar wrote a number of oratorios and works for chorus and orchestra. These include The Apostles and The Kingdom , and the cantata Caractacus . The most significant of all is The Dream of Gerontius , with words by Cardinal Newman, a remarkable study of a man on his deathbed.

Born near Worcester in England, the son of a piano-tuner and owner of a music shop, Elgar was self-taught in composition and began his career by writing pieces for local perfomances. He became the leading English composer of his generation and a significant figure among late Romantic European musicians. In 1889 he married one of his piano pupils, Caroline Roberts, and moved to London. Success came later, after his return to the West Country, with the completion of the "Enigma Variations", first performed in London in 1899. Elgar was capable of expressing dominant and patriotic themes in his music. His Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, adapted for the coronation of King Edward VII, is extremely popular even today. After the death of his wife in 1920 he seemed to lose his previous inspiration and wrote relatively little. He died before completing the work on his third symphony. Edward Elgar Works Elgar wrote a number of oratorios.

Elgar, Edward (1857 - 1934)
b June 2, 1857, Broadheath, Worcestershire, England.
d. Feb. 23, 1934, Worcester, Worcestershire in full SIR EDWARD WILLIAM ELGAR English composer whose works in the orchestral idiom of late 19th-century Romanticismcharacterized by bold tunes, striking colour effects, and mastery of large formsstimulated a renaissance of English music. Elgar, a Roman Catholic, planned to continue with a trilogy of religious oratorios, but he completed only two: The Apostles (1903) and The Kingdom (1906). In these less successful works, representative themes are interwoven in the manner of the leitmotivs of Wagner. Other vocal works include the choral cantata, Caractacus (1898), and the song cycle for contralto, Sea Pictures (1900). In 1904 Elgar was knighted, and from 1905 to 1908 he was the University of Birmingham's first professor of music. During World War I he wrote occasional patriotic pieces. After the death of his wife in 1920, he curtailed his music writing severely, and in 1929 he returned to Worcestershire. Friendship with Bernard Shaw eventually stimulated Elgar to further composition, and at his death he left unfinished a third symphony, a piano concerto, and an opera. Elgar's principal works of a programmatic nature are the overture Cockaigne, or In London Town (1901), and the "symphonic study" Falstaff (1913). Of his five Pomp and Circumstance marches (1901-07; 1930), the first became particularly famous. Also highly esteemed are his two symphonies (1908 and 1911), the Introduction and Allegro for strings (1905), and his Violin Concerto (1910) and Cello Concerto (1919).
