John Eaton is Washington D.C. pianist extraordinaire. Considered one of the foremost interpreters of American music, Mr. Eaton offers a unique combination of ultra-tasteful jazz and fascinating observations. Pianist, vocalist, musicologist and humorist - John Eaton is one of America's true musical treasures. A graduate of Yale University and a student of renowned classical teacher Alexander Lipsky, Eaton has been performing professionally for more than 30 years. He was named to the Steinway Concert Artist roster in 1988. From shows at smoky jazz clubs to a command performance in the East Room of the White House, he has appeared both as a soloist and with such legendary artists as Zoot Sims, Benny Carter, Clark Terry, and Wild Bill Davison. He is a featured player at the Kool Jazz Festival and a mainstay of the Smithsonian's Performing Arts Jazz series. For twelve years, Eaton has given more than 200 sold out lecture/concerts for the Smithsonian Institution on American popular song both in Washington, D.C. and around the country. The series was broadcast nationally on National Public Radio and Radio Smithsonian. In addition, John Eaton has taped a television series on American popular song and great American songwriters. The first two programs on George Gershwin and Duke Ellington were broadcast nationally on public television.

Background note: The son of John and Janet (Andrew) Eaton, John Eaton received his early education entirely under the tutelage of his parents on their farm at Sutton, N.H. Supplementing his home schooling with a systematic reading program and teaching school on the side, Eaton arranged to attend the Thetford Academy in Vermont, and from there, worked his way through Dartmouth College, graduating in 1854. On September 29, 1864, Eaton married Alice Eugenia Shirley, the daughter of a Vicksburg Unionist, and three months later, he resigned his commission. Eaton remained in the south, editing a 'radical' Unionist newspaper, the Memphis Post, from 1866-67, and under the school law of 1867, won election as state superintendant of education. Although his educational policies were heartily opposed in Tennessee, his support of Grant as editor, educator, and political organizer earned him appointments on the board of visitors at West Point (1869) and as Commissioner of Education (1870). Eaton's experience and political savvy are credited with salvaging the floundering Bureau of Education from congressional annihilation, and he personally oversaw the development of the Bureau's collection of statistics. He remained at his post until ill health forced his resignation in 1886. Never one to remain idle for long, Eaton embarked on yet another career, acting as president of Marietta College in Ohio (1886-1891) and Sheldon Jackson College in Salt Lake City (1895-1899). During the military occupation of Puerto Rico in 1899, he was tabbed to organize a public school system there, but was forced to resign a year later due to serious illness.

John Eaton
Born:
Called by Andrew Porter "the most interesting opera composer writing in America today," John Eaton is internationally recognized as a composer and performer of electronic and microtonal music. Eaton's operas include The Tempest (1985), commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera, The Cry of Clytaemnestra (1980), a work with over 17 productions, including a joint US/USSR staging in Moscow, and Danton and Robespierre
In his chamber, vocal, and orchestral music, Eaton expands the traditional tools of the composer through microtonal scales - using a fuller spectrum of notes per octave than the usual twelve tones - and electronic instruments, such as the Syn-Ket.
Eaton's composition teachers included Milton Babbitt and Roger Sessions. After receiving BA and MFA degrees at Princeton University, he performed extensively as a jazz pianist and synthesist. First joining the Indiana University faculty in 1970, John Eaton is currently Professor of Music Composition at the University of Chicago. He was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, on 30 March 1935.
His awards include a 1990 MacArthur "genius award," three Prix de Rome and two Guggenheim grants, and commissions from the Koussevitzky and Fromm Foundations, the Santa Fe Opera, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Public Broadcasting Corporation.
