One of the premier composers of the Romantic era, Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) shares the distinction of pioneering a uniquely Czech style of orchestral composition and fearlessly appropriating the music of other nations. Beginning his career with inspiration from Schubert, Brahms, and Beethoven, Dvorak's unique voice became fully developed with his discovery of Czech folk music. The exuberantly nationalistic Symphony No. 6 incorporated a Czech folk dance into an elaborate four-movement work. Later, a three year visit to the United States broadened his musical scope even further: his Symphony No. 9, the world-famous "New World Symphony," drew on folk melodies and rhythms from Amerindian and African-American culture. Dvorak's symphonies paint in great detail upon wide canvasses; his passion, his flair for drama, and his impeccable ear for development lead the listener through a breathtaking diversity of moods, textures, and themes.

In his own words...

"My own duty as a teacher... is not so much to interpret Beethoven, Wagner or other masters of the past, but to give what encouragement I can to the young musicians of America. I... hope that just as this nation has already surpassed so many others in marvelous inventions and feats of engineering and commerce, and has made an honorable place for itself in literature in one short century, so it must assert itself in the... art of music... To bring about this result, we must trust to the very youthful enthusiasm and patriotism of this country."
Bedrich Smetana
Johannes Brahms , who arranged for the publication of his works by Simrock, one of the major European publishers. His reputation grew throughout Europe, especially in England. In 1891 he was appointed to the Prague conservatory.
Symphony No.9 "From the New World". Dvorák returned to his native Prague in 1895. In 1901 he premiered his most important opera, Rusalka
Dvorák's musical style is generally classical in its approach, owing much to Johannes Brahms, whom he admired greatly. At the same time, he used native Czech elements extensively. His interest in nationalist ideals carried over into his work in the United States. In America he discovered the music of Native Americans and African-Americans and declared that in them American composers could find "all that is needed for a great and noble school of music," and the music that he composed in this country shows some of that influence. Scenes from Longfellow's "Hiawatha" inspired the middle two movements of the "New World" Symphony. His "American" quartet in F is based in part on a five-note scale that reflects Native American music he had heard.

Dvoř¡k was born on September 8 in Nelahozeves , near Prague (then Austrian Empire , today the Czech Republic ), where he spent most of his life. His father was a butcher, innkeeper, and professional player of the zither . Dvoř¡k's parents recognized his musical talent early, and he received his earliest musical education at the village school which he entered in 1847, age 6. He studied music in Prague 's only Organ School at the end of the 1850s, and gradually developed into an accomplished player of the violin and the viola. Throughout the 1860s he played viola in the Bohemian Provisional Theater Orchestra, which from 1866 was
