Antonin Dvorak Exhibit Dr. Antonin Dvorak, world-famous musician and composer, came to spend the summer of 1893 in Spillville, Iowa. Through a resident of Spillville he had learned of the village, and with his family he arrived from New York City by railroad early in June. It was said that the following morning, before many of the townspeople were astir, Dvorak arose and proceeded to the site of Riverside Park, along the Turkey River, to commune with nature and enjoy the sound of birds and feast his eyes on the beauties of the region. While in Spillville, Dvorak composed the widely-known "American Quartette" and found the inspiration for "Humoresque", which was written after he left Spillville. The Dvorak Exhibit, located on the second floor of the museum, has historical artifacts as well as written material on Dvorak and the time he spent in Spillville. Also on display are harmoniums (pump organs) like Dvorak played and composed music on during his visit.

Music and race: Antonn Dvoř¡k the negrophile
Robert Schwartz and independently Jorge Pullin kindly sent me a pretty interesting article by Joseph Horowitz, an artistic advisor to orchestras: New World Symphony and Discord It describes the relationships between race and music in Boston and New York at the end of the 19th century.
Czech composer Antonn Dvoř¡k was assigned the task to create the American national music. He was impressed by many things in America but he decided that the "negro melodies" such as "Swing Low" and "Deep River" were the "future for American music". He thought that the black themes would penetrate into classical compositions while jazz became a completely new genre but his prediction was nontrivial anyway.
In Boston, Dvoř¡k's opinions were politically incorrect because the blacks were "not inherently musical" according to many powerful figures over there. For example, a very influential Harvard professor argued that blacks and whites were different species. Dvoř¡k was labeled a "negrophile". Also, critics in Boston newspapers routinely and "scientifically" described Dvoř¡k's and Tchaikovsky's music as "primitive" and "barbarian". In New York, however, the people who thought that the blacks were "inherently musical" were stronger and created a much better environment for Dvoř¡k.

Born near Prague, Dvorák studied the violin with the local school master. Then, in 1857, he attended the organ school in the city. He was influenced by the Czech composer Smetana who directed the Opera Orchestra in which Dvorák played the viol. Then, with the positive encouragement of Brahms , he devoted most of his life to composition. Later he became a professor of composition at the Prague Conservatoire. From 1892 until 1895 he served as the director of the new National Conservatory in New York City, America, a period in which his compositions show his deep interest in American folk music. He made several trips to England where he was very popular and much admired. He received many honours in his own country and resisted invitations by Brahms to move to Vienna where he was only grudgingly accepted. He died in 1904, shortly after the first performances of his last opera, "Armida". Antonin Dvorák Works Dvoràk wrote nine operas, the first in 1870 and the last completed and staged in 1903.

Have it played to you; I feel sure the players will enjoy doing it!" Only one year earlier, Brahms had recommended the music of Dvorak to his publisher in Berlin, Simrock, who accepted Dvorak for publication and suggested that he compose a set of Slavonic Dances as Brahms had composed Hungarian Dances.
