    edit Early life in China
Tan Dun was born in the village of Simao, Changsha in the Hunan province of China . As a child, he was fascinated by the role in his village of the shimao , who conducted rituals and ceremonies, often set to music made with organic objects such as rocks and water. However, as a child in the midst of China's cultural revolution , he found this kind of "backward thinking" frowned upon, and he was sent to work as a rice planter on a government commune. That, however, had little effect on his affinity for music. He created his own musical group, utilizing peasants in the village and playing whatever they could, sometimes just banging on pots and pans. It was from these peasants that he began to learn to play traditional Chinese string instruments. His escape from the commune came in the form of a government sponsored touring company of the Peking opera . When a ferry full of performers capsized near the commune, killing several of them, Tan was employed by the troupe and left the commune.

Artist: Tan Dun Album: The First Emperor Other Tags: opera I saw The First Emperor as part of the Met at the Movies , and although the production itself is still new and toddling, it's a refreshing entry into the scene. I would love to see future productions grow in depth and see it again in, say, five years. With cellist Yo-Yo Ma as soloist, the music has the sweep of a romantic film score while reflecting the action and atmosphere of the film through the mesmerizing, often delicate sounds of traditional Chinese music. Composer, conductor and winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for music composition, Tan Dun began his career in his native China in the Peking Opera after planting rice for two years during the Cultural Revolution. A graduate of Beijing's Central Conservatory and Columbia University in New York, his music reaches large audiences throughout the world in performances by leading orchestras and ensembles. Tan Dun, an exclusive Sony Classical recording artist, has created world-premiere recordings of his opera Marco Polo ( ) and Symphony 1997 (Heaven Earth Mankind), a large choral-orchestral work written to commemorate the occasion of the return of Hong Kong to China ( SK 63368 A tale of intrigue, love, violence and betrayal set in 19th-century China during the Ching dynasty, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon stars Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh and won rave reviews in its world premiere in a special out-of-competition screening at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival. The Sony Classical soundtrack recording of the film’s score includes the end-title song "A Love Before Time" sung by Asian pop star CoCo Lee for which Tan Dun and Jorge Calandrelli created the music based on themes from the score (incorporating Yo-Yo Ma’s cello solos), and lyrics by the film's producer, James Schamus. The international release of both the film and the soundtrack recording will follow beginning in the fall of 2000.

    http://www.otherminds.org/shtml/Tan.shtml

Tan Dun unites Chinese shamanistic traditions with the western avant-garde, reaching audiences through venues from the Concertgebouw, Avery Fisher Hall and Suntory Hall, to the Guggenheim Museum and La MaMa ETC. This year, Tan will be the featured composer at the Ultima Festival (Oslo), the Festival d'Automne (Paris), the BBC Proms (London), and the Helsinki Biennale which hosts the world premiere of his cello concerto Intercourse of Fire and Water: Yi . His works have been selected for major festivals around the world and have been broadcast often by National Public Radio, the BBC and Berlin Radio. In 1994, the recording of his orchestra music On Taoism (on Koch-Schwann) was selected by BBC Magazine as one of the best CD's of the year. Tan Dun was born in 1957 in Si Mao village in central Hunan, China and spent his early childhood with his grandmother, growing up amidst the ancient culture of a rural Chinese village. After planting rice for two years during the Cultural Revolution, and then working as a fiddle player and arranger for a provincial Beijing Opera troupe, Tan was selected for the Central Conservatory of Beijing where he spent eight years. He came to New York City in 1986 to take up a fellowship at Columbia University, and completed the doctoral program in composition, studying with Chou, Davidovsky and Edwards. His music is published by G. Schirmer.

Tan Dun's Opera: A Special Delivery From the Spirit World

By ROBERT LIPSYTE and LOIS B. MORRIS Published: June 26, 2005 IN mid-May, a Federal Express package containing three copies of a 226-page musical manuscript thumped on the desk of Sarah Billinghurst, the assistant manager for artistic affairs at the Metropolitan Opera. It was sent by Tan Dun, the Chinese-born avant-garde composer whom the Met had commissioned eight years ago to write an opera. Seeing the half score, Ms. Billinghurst said she felt "ecstatically happy." About
Tan Dun grew up as a farmer in rural China; he's now scheduled to release a new opera to the New York's Metropolitan Opera in 2005. In between those two events Tan Dun has had a musical career of uncommon success. He is a composer of international stature concerned more with moving humanity on a deep level than with composing in any given school or classical genre. Among his most recent awards are the Academy Award for his soundtrack to the film

    The Bottom Line
Tan Dun's The First Emperor is unlike any opera, movie, or play I've ever seen. His use and combination of two radically different styles of opera, Peking and Western, is absolutely brilliant. Mesmerizing, captivating, exhilarating, moving, dramatic, explosive, and lyrical, are all words worthy enough to describe this work. It is a whole new genre of music; one I'd love to see, hear, and know more of! Pros
