Dufay was born in Cambrai, currently in France, and then in the Duchy of Burgundy - one of the primary musical centers of the era, and a highly significant staging ground for the structural principles of the high Renaissance. He spent a considerable portion of his life in Italy, in various cities, and so not only contributed to a refinement in the musical life of bustling Italy, but also brought ideas on lively Italian textures to the intellectual centers of Northern Europe. Dufay was one of the most cosmopolitan composers of his or any age, and his large musical output contains masterpieces in every genre from cyclic masses to isorhythmic motets to simply ornamented hymns and dramatic cycles. Dufay's music flows more smoothly than the characteristically complex rhythmic textures of the late Medieval period, and is marked by graceful melodies and a compelling sense of direction. As his career progressed and his fame grew, Dufay increasingly took up the four-voice vocal texture which was to be characteristic of the early Renaissance as a whole. His four cantus firmus masses "Se la face ay pale," "L'homme arme," "Ecce ancilla domini," and "Ave regina caelorum" are landmarks in what was to become the dominant style of mass composition.

Let me introduce myself....I am Guillaume Dufay. I was just about to stop at this point with my composing. Sit! Sit! When I write my polyphonic musical compositions for voice, I keep in mind the medieval method "of composing each voice of the polyphonic composition successively. In this technique the top and tenor parts are written first. To the framework they create will be added one or more voices that will enrich the harmonies and vary the rhythms." In my earlier works, I mainly focused on elaborating a preexisting melody: paraphrasing. Now i am experimenting with a technique called "simultaneous composition; that is, writing all of the parts at the same time. This technique . . . helps to create the more homogeneous and smoother texture that is preferred by composers." I enjoy writing secular vocal music called the chanson, a form inherited from the Middle Ages. In these pieces, my "music exactly mirrors the complicated repetition schemes of poems such as the rondeau and the ballade. These compositions are typically written for three voices with flowing melodic lines arranged in clearly set phrases."

After singing in the choir at Cambrai Cathedral, Dufay was briefly in the service of the Malatesta family in Italy. After a further period in France, he returned to sing in the Papal chapel in 1428. Z Guillaume Dufay (Composer) Born: August 5, 1397 (?) - Beersel, in the vicinity of Brussels (or Hainault) , Belgium Died: November 27, 1474 - Cambrai, Belgium Guillaume [Guillermus, Guiliemus, Gugliemus, Wilhelmus] Dufay [Dudais, Duffai, Du Fay, Du Fayt] was a Franco-Flemish composer and music theorist of the early Renaissance. As the central figure in the Burgundian School, he was the most famous and influential composer in Europe in the mid-15th century, and can be considered as the founding member of the Netherlands school which dominated European music for the next 150 years. Life From November 1418 to 1420 he was a subdeacon at Cambrai Cathedral. In 1420 he left Cambrai again, this time going to Rimini, and possibly Pesaro, where he worked for the Malatesta family. Although no records survive of his employment there, several compositions of his can be dated to this period; they contain references which make a residence in Italy reasonably certain. It was there that he met the composers Hugo and Arnold de Lantins, who were among the musicians of the Malatesta household. In 1424 Dufay again returned to Cambrai, this time because of the illness and subsequent death of the relative with whom his mother was staying. By 1426, however, he had gone back to Italy, this time to Bologna, where he entered the service of Cardinal Louis Aleman, the papal legate. While in Bologna he became a deacon, and by 1428 he was a priest. Dufay was to remain in Cambrai through the 1440s, and during this time he was also in the service of the Duke of Burgundy. While in Cambrai he collaborated with Nicolas Grenon on a complete revision of the liturgical musical collection of the cathedral, which included writing an extensive collection of polyphonic music for services. In addition to his musical work, he was active in the general administration of the cathedral. In 1444 his mother Marie died, and was buried in the cathedral; and in 1445 Dufay moved into the house of the previous canon, which was to remain his primary residence for the rest of his life.

My Favourites Dufay was one of the most influential composers of the fifteenth century, considered a leader among his peers and by musicians following him centuries later. Dufay originally from Cambrai traveled to cities like Rome, Florence and Turin, spreading his harmonious contrapuntal style, where lofty voices intertwine and respond to each other with a deep, spiritual beauty. Much of Dufay's music was sacred; his compositions for the church included a variety of Masses, motets and hymns, although he also wrote Italian and French styled secular music. Dufay's style often called the Burgundian or Netherlands style was an outgrowth of earlier composers such as John Dunstable, and unlike other music produced in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, sounds remarkably harmonious to the modern Western ear, due to its similar conception of which notes were consonant and which dissonant.
